I tried putting in coal to the fuel hatch, but it doesn't work? Is fuel broken altogether?

Did you click the Fuel button after putting the ore in?

Yep. But coal apparently does not work as fuel. Clicking fuel does nothing when I put coal in.

Have you tried another type of ore? It's possible that coal was removed as a fuel source (intentionally or not).

Won't let me press fuel button, Coals doesn't accept :/

Coal confirmed broken. I tested all other known fuels--Uranium, Plutonium, Solarium, and their respective upgrades--and they all work. However, none are obtainable on the starter planet, meaning you're stuck without admin commands.

Copper (and some Iron) ore is obtainable. Have you tried that?

Just tried... and failed. While I was at it, I tried all other ores available from the get-go: Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Core Fragment ores; none of them worked. (I even tested other stuff not obtainable on the homeworld: Titanium, Aegisalt, Violium, and Rubium ores; in addition to Erchius Crystals. Nada.)

I second this claim. It indeed does not work without admin commands. All other sources of fuel do work, EXCEPT for coal, which is the starter fuel.

Unrefined wood and planks do not work too.

A new liquid, liquidfuel, appears to have been added. It's possible that this change (making lower ores no longer count as fuel) is intentional. I'd wait and see how the quest for it works out.

Note that the Support forum is not the place for ideas or suggestions; you should post those in the Suggestions Forum. We're just here to see if the old behavior will be restored or if a new behavior is implemented in its place.

It would seem that Liquid Erichus is indeed meant to replace Coal as the starter fuel. However, at the moment, moons cannot be found in the starter system. (Unless that changed last night; I haven't had a chance to play yet today.)

How are you supposed to get Liquid Erichus if it's only on moons, and you can't get to a moon without using fuel to fly there, of which coal no longer works?

Some of the ores still work, although you may not be able to obtain them on starter planets. It's also possible that something will be given to you via a quest, or the fuel cost for traveling within a system may be removed entirely. We'll have to give it some time and see how things shake out.

And what is the command to give your self some of the working ore fuels?

In the latest Nightly you don't need fuel to travel within the solar system. You should be able to find a moon and gather fuel for the FTL drive without a problem.

Also, travel within a solar system seems much faster than it did before.

Only problem is that moons do not presently spawn in the starter system. This will presumably be changed soon, but until then, you're stuck with using admin.

You can buy fuel at Infinity Express (currently 20x Liquid Fuel (1 fuel unit each) for 500 pixels). Go beat the arcade game 5 times to get enough money, and you can make a jump to a neighboring system. Once you are at a point that you can gather your own fuel (instead of buying it), you're set.

Also, the amount of fuel it takes to make an FTL jump scales with how far away you want to go. A neighboring star seems to be about 10 fuel units, and one about 1 starmap screen over is around 30 fuel units. Buying fuel is a totally feasible option for anyone just starting out (and got stuck without a moon in the starter system) or someone who managed to get themselves stranded. Remember that you can access the outpost from just about anywhere; there's been a gate at every solar system I've traveled to (so far) so with the arcade machine being a reliable (if a bit slow) source of income, you should never be more than about 10 minutes (real time) away from a bit of fuel. (I don't recommend buying fuel at later points in the game unless you have a ton of pixels to blow; you'll still get fuel from high-end ores and rods that you can acquire as part of your travels anyways. Also, something I just learned recently: turning your ores into rods will give you about 25% extra fuel than if you just used the equivalent amount of ore. So definitely convert to rods if you can.)

Closing as this is an intentional result of a change in mechanics in the Nightly build. Fuel is available from Infinity Express once you've fixed your FTL and no fuel is required when traveling within a solar system.
