I recently bought the game and the game has just been very choppy around mostly 10 to 40 fps. I do know it's in beta but I really think if i can run Battlefield 4 with 60 to 100+fps with everything on high that I could run star bound with at least 60 fps. So if anyone has fixes i'd be happy to try them.

    Try running in OpenGL?

Hmm, I'm no tech genius to be honest. I'm sure this thread will stay up front long enough for someone more useful to come along and help you. However, I can note that optimization is a thing that apparently isn't so high up the priority ladder just yet (but it will happen!) that there is some problems that make the game practically unplayable for some people. My computer is just about as powerful as a cheap laptop and I got it in 2009, it runs Starbound flawlessly. Yet my friend, with a newly built computer has so many problems it has got to the point where he has lost the will to even bother playing.

Battlefield 4 is a released title and is optimized to run efficiently.

Starbound is still in a sate of constant change and has no optimization yet.

So yes, an optimized game will run much better than one that is not. Also it will work wildly different on different setups.

Also, there are a lot of things that your friend is probably doing horribly wrong. Like, for instance, running Starbound or Steam in compatibility mode or as an administrator. These have been known to cause SEVERE discrepancies in performance, even to the point where the game just crashes instantly.

It was suggested the other day that running a server locally and then connecting to the server might improve performance, assuming you have enough memory available to handle running both at once. That depends entirely on WHY performance is low, mind, but it may be worth a shot.
