Foreground block paint.

Entirely random thought stemming from my ship decorating and difficulty stemming from trying to make the bridge make sense.

What if one of the paint tools made it so that the background block hides liquids/people behind it?
In case you want to make a lava tank with a small window that you can jump into. Because jumping into lava tanks makes sense.
Or if you want to have it look like you're walking through a doorway in the background when entering the bridge.


How difficult would that be?

 

People would use it for griefing by plopping people into enormous blind mazes made of steel blocks or something, I dunno.

 

I am now imagining X-ray goggles to deal with the situation.

Fade the blocks when you're behind them. Transparency when necessary, opaque when not for obscuring things such as wiring or secret rooms.

 

Honestly I kinda like the idea of placing blocks or sprites in the foreground to create depth. Besides griefing isn't a dev problem it's a server owner problem.

 

Nice idea, but I think I saw somewhere a while back that the devs had absolutely no plans to make a foreground layer. Don't quote me on that, though.

Yeah, it would be cool to have a foreground layer to add extra depth to stuff. All they'd have to do is make the blocks turn transparent when you're behind them to prevent griefing and stuffs.
