Well, sir, you would be hoping in vain.

I like how you assume people just have "free time" all week long. For those of us with full time jobs (often 50+ hours a week in this economy) families, and other obligations, time to spend on doing just what we would like to do can be a rarity.

So yes, I fully intend to take a day off to enjoy something I have been looking forward to.
I've worked hard. I've earned it.

I work from home as a network admin, and do 4 x12 hour shifts, then 4 full days off, so I'm pretty much covered for spare time in which to play Starbound. I'd rather use my vacation time for vacation.

I won't need to take the day off, I'll be a full time Dad by the time Starbound comes out. :)
If I was still working though I wouldn't be able to afford to take the day off.

I plan on taking at least 2 days off for this game

I would if I had the spare time, but I've already lined up all my vacation time for November and December. If it releases next year I'll line up some PTO for it, but I'm not so super excited that I will take a sick day.

I, unfortunately, don't have the luxury of being able to take time off just for a video game release at the moment, no matter how much I might be looking forward to Starbound. Chances are I'll just cross my fingers and hope that the release is during one of the days of the week where I'm not required to work. Otherwise I'll just have to wait...

(I work in education so it would throw everybody else off too much)

Release day = download servers overloaded, connection issues, dwnld speed <100kb/s, launcher crashes several times forcing you to redownload. I'm not taking day off to enjoy that.

It might be that way for Beta, depending on how they choose to release it and on what platforms, full release? It'll be on Steam, Steam rarely has (At least in my experience.) serious issues with server overload.

Actually that is true. I personally dislike Steam (so much I even forgot that Starbound will be distributed via Steam), but yeah, reliable download speed is one of its advantages.

These are some great answers and discussions, folks! So far, it seems that the majority that work are in favor of not taking any time off for Starbound, the most common reason being that, to paraphrase, "there are better things to spend your vacation days on than a game release". I totally understand that position and the many reasons behind it, which stems from how an individual values their time to their not being able to justify taking time off from their job for this purpose.

For me personally, I have a job where although I work 45-50hrs/week I have a lot of control and flexibility regarding my taking days off, and 90% of the time my requests for time off are accepted with little to no questioning. On top of that, I usually split my out-of-work time between my wife, friends, and non-gaming activities, so having a single day where I can wake up and blast 8-10 hours of a new game without interruption or worry about that day off conflicting with other priorities is a rare move on my part. Plus in the end, I'm still a gamer at heart, so when a rare gem like Starbound hits the market, I can easily justify the vacation/"sick" day to myself and my wife. :)

Yes but there's still frequently delays, day 1 bugs, crashes, lag, things go wrong. You take a risk whenever you take the launch day off for a game. I can understand the excitement, I've been off for a couple of releases but I was sick or unemployed for those, they are never entirely smooth. I would not take the day off for a game given a choice given all the risks it's not worth it, there's better things to do with your day off than spend it cursing at servers and bugs and the fact ATI haven't rolled out drivers that give playable performance.

    And yeah flexitime represent!

just dont be a dummy and post on facebook twitter ect hey guys im playing insert game here

i mean obviously if you have a job you should do everything in your power to work hard so that you can earn money for yourself and your family if you have young kids

but sometimes its also good to play hard because while to your boss games maybe a waste of time
its been proven that happy workers are more productives workers

I agree. Vacation is a privilage, and I would want to be humble about it.

No... while I do have 30 days of vacation left between now and June 30, I think my job is more important than playing a game. It's not going anywhere.

I'm going to take a week off! :p
Every year I take two weeks holiday during the summer that I spend with my wife and son. I usually take a week in November for myself as well because that is usually when all major game releases of the year come out. Last year it was XCOM, the year before that Skyrim etc..
Hopefully the beta will arrive during that time or I'll postpone for a bit this year...
