How many of you are planning to take a vacation/personal/"sick" day just to play Starbound the day it's officially released? This is assuming it comes out on a weekday, though I'm sure there are folks here that may work on weekends, too... SO, if this game comes out on a day that you normally would work, will you take the day off?

I have a full 8 hours of vacation time lined up just for Starbound, though if I can make a valid excuse for burning sick hours instead, I'll most likely go that route. :coffee:

  2. I think if I did have a job, I would wait til I got home.
While I am pretty excited for the game, I think I'd rather not waste vacation / sick days. (unless it was the end of the year and they didn't go on to the next year)

A full eight hours of vacation time? Do you mean days? I've never heard of a company giving someone a single shift of work's worth of vacation time before. That just seems silly. They usually want you to not use it whatsoever, or use it all at once.

I still have 8 days of vacation left!

Guess what some of them will be used for :)

I do. I dont have 15 days of vacation, I have 120hrs of vacation which I can use like I want. Take 4hrs to finish early a friday, or stuff like that! :D

I will be taking the day off and I have already notified my wife that the next 8 hours after release of the beta, will belong to me. This is the policy that I adopted when Skyrim was released so she knows the drill. Beta here I come.

  7. Does self employment count? Because if I ever catch Suika taking a "vacation" by playing this game I'm going to fire them.

What Gnomechompski said. :) I currently have 69.78 hours of vacation time (it was higher, but a summer vacation with my wife ate up about 50 hours back in June). I don't have "shifts" but just hours that I work, so I can leave early one day, work crazy hours the next. Very flexible when it matters.

QFT. I usually give my wife ample notification when a game I've been following for months (and years in some cases) is coming out - that way I'll have my uninterrupted game time in the mancave. :geek: So far it's only happened once during our relationship, the game being Skyrim as well. Starbound and Smash Bros for the Wii U will be the next on this special list!

    EDIT:
I like your plan, and the responses others gave there! I don't know if I'll be able to play 48 hours straight though - I think my body would give out before then. :proper:

I should hope no one here is honestly thinking of wasting a vacation day on a video game that can be played during any free time of the week.

Depends on the circumstance. Some people may only have 40hrs of vacation. So it would be a waste. I on the other hand have a good 2 months of vacation time and will definitely use a day or 2.

We're switching to unlimited PTO (paid time off) where I work at the end of the month. So once that happens we get as much time off as our manager sees fit to give us. I'll probably end up with 6-8 weeks next year. But I've got 2 days from the old system that I've still got to use by the end of the month. I just need enough notice (and the beta to come out this month) and I might take a day off for it. I voted no, though.

Personally I wouldn't take a day off, for any game. That just seems a tad extreme, and if the management found about about us taking a vacation day just to play games all day... well, it COULD potentially be bad for the records.

You would be surprised just how little "free" time actual adults with children actually have. My "free" time is usually not free until after my kid has gone to bed and I have spent some quality time with my wife. I generally average 1 to 2 hours of free time a night. Don't let this time start too late or me be too tired to capitalize because said free time is spent sleeping.

@Spike: what I do on my personal time off, with vacation that I have acrued, is not my employers business.

I understand, and I completely agree. And right now, I have just graduated college, and have no job at the moment. But once I finds a job, I just don't want to do anything that might jeopardize my position. I wholly agree with you that my time off is no-one's business; it's only my personal opinion, and I'm fine with other people taking off work for a videogame, provided they do not brag about it at work.

If you fire youself, you wouldn't be fired, because if you were fired, you couldn't fire anybody, therefore bringing you back to square one.

Congratulations Suika, you are bound to your job and the only way out is DEATH.

I'd take the day off. I'm self employed, and when most people hear that they think i'm a slacker and don't do anything most of the day. It's the exact opposite, i don't know anyone who works longer hours than me for as many days in a year as i do; at least 12 hours every day, even weekends, holidays, my birthday. I haven't taken a single day off in over a month, and the last time i took any time off, it was only for part of a day.

So yes, i'd happily take some time off from constantly working to play Starbound since i can, i might even take a week.

I'll probably take a vacation day if I can convince my roommate to also take a vacation day.

I'd never consider skipping a day at Uni for a game. I didn't for Mass Effect 3, so I won't for Starbound.
