I ran out of patience a long time ago, instead I am draining from my sanity.

Does that mean mental instability is a virtue, too? :lolwut:

I'm pretty sure they're already doing what you just said OP. They're a small team, why bother with a release date? All it does is set a deadline which isn't necessary, what happens if there's not enough time? Release it incomplete? Push the release date?

If they were focusing on content which is going to be added in updates, I personally think the release date would be mid 2013.

I find it kind of funny that people are so impatient, don't get me wrong. I've been waiting for this game since word was first announced. (I just recently joined the forums, and only because I saw an interesting thread I wanted to post in, had it not been for that I still wouldn't have a forum account. I was with Minecraft from the day it went public, my forum account is only six months old or so.) And personally? I'd much rather it be delayed, andI have to wait to play such an awesome game, then it be rushed out.

I was one of those people that bought Terraria the day it was released, my god was it so bad. The premise was good, but really? I played for 5-8 hours and got bored due to the shear lack of anything really there to it. I've since gone back to it time and time again, mostly at the request of friends who asked me to join them in another server, or to challenge myself in some other wonky way, like getting to hardcore mode without using any armor at all. I've sunken well over 100 hours into the game at this point. But on initial release? I was really disappointed with the game. I then read into it, realized they were rushed, that's why I kept an eye on it, but many people won't do that, many people will try a game, and if it's bad, they'll drop it and never look back.

I'm not sure how many people here, were there for Minecraft's original creation and release, but the game didn't hold a candle to what it is today. And the funny part? There were very, very few people who enjoyed minecraft back then. Minecraft has been out for over three years now, and it's just recently really picked up in popularity, because it had such a lackluster release. That's one guy making it, so it was enough to support him. Chucklefish is not a one man team, they can't afford (literally afford) to screw up and release a game that doesn't make people tell all their friends. Their lives in alot of ways, depend on this game doing well.

Another little tidbit of a game for you, Castle Story, I backed it on Kickstarter, with a generous backing no less because I truely wanted to see the game released. But you know what? People kept rushing and rushing and rushing, and they finally caved and put out a Prototype, and you know what? It is so buggy, and has so many issues, that it renders it nearly unplayable, in my case it is unplayable. Some people's version of the game just doesn't work. Now? I'm left with alot of distaste for the game. Sure I'll play it when it releases fully, but for now? I don't even go to the forums anymore, maybe once a week at best. Because the first impression I got from it, was that they rushed it and didn't care enough. Which isn't true in the least, but that's how I perceived it at the time.

TL: DR Stop rushing them, and be thankful that they care enough to make a game that doesn't suck on release, like Minecraft, Terraria and so many other games that DO rely on DLCs and updates to make a game better. And remember, as silly as this may seem, this isn't a game for them, this is their job, this is their life. They have to take this seriously. Be patient and be happy.

Terraria had far more than 5-8 hours of content in the beginning. If you enjoyed Terraria for over 100 hours after some patches, there was probably a different reason other than lack of content which deterred you from playing. Possibly the confusing beginning and everyone not understanding the possibilities.

And MineCraft too, it has always been popular. Minecraft is a pretty bad example to be honest because on release it was in alpha during 2009 and beta in 2010 and yet tens of thousands of people bought it.

I agree with your overall message but I just think you exaggerated the initial releases of Terraria and MineCraft. When people start Starbound they'll love it but in 2 years time when there's loads more content, many people will think similar to you (not that it sucked on release, but it seemed like a "bare" release when compared to what it is now).

So was I, and I played the hell out of it. Exploring was fun, building was fun (a first for me) and combat was fun. Sure it was a bit barebones due to it being released early, but the fun was there. Though I think if I had actually been following the game and knew what was Redigit actually had planned for the game, it may not have been as satisfying.

Now while this is the case for Terraria, I still don't believe it would work for Starbound. Since Starbound has many features being developed simultaneously and are all integral to the game experience, any early release would leave many of those unfinished and/or buggy. I feel this would result in a much lower quality game experience than a lack of content (as in Terraria's case) ever would.

I'm afraid Roxy, that it was 5-8 hours for me. Remember though, that I rarely if ever play a game solo, I don't personally enjoy single-player games, not sure why. It was myself and another roommate, and we had all the bosses beaten etc in about 8 hours our first run through. And now, it was lack of content that made me stop playing it, when it started patching is when I looked into it and realized there was alot planned for the game, so I didn't mind hopping into servers with my friends. Again, this also stems from me not playing games solo, as I don't get any enjoyment out of them

Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean there was nothing to do. As with Minecraft you can always build and start projects, of that I'm aware. But I mean the core of the game, not counting the free-form building. As for Minecraft, tens of thousands? Sure...that's not much. Considering it's backing now is in the millions, the scope of that, sorry it's initial release wasn't many players. But again I think in the scope of a then and now, forgive me if that is wrong. That's just the way I look at it that's all.

@Soup- It was fun, but to me it wore off very very quickly for me. Because in the end, it was all the same stuff to explore over and over again, you admittedly got some really awesome spawns and really awesome cave systems. Sadly I have a really bad attention problem, so alot of games get boring quickly for me, and tend to make me walk away if they don't have alot of content to work with. But that's just my own self-failing as it were, nothing really with the game.

The point of my post was more, I don't want that for Starbound, nor do I think it's going to happen, with everything I've seen I think I'll get alot of enjoyment out of it, even on release, not only will I not being playing it alone, but it'll be a game that won't get old fast, because if I get bored of a planet? Well I'll just go to another planet and I'll be ok. Unlike Terraria, or Minecraft. My friends and I just got me on another MC server, and asked me to help put it together. In the end? Still looks, feels, smells and tastes like Minecraft, so in a week or so I'll be bored to death with it, and that's only playing for a couple hours a day if that.

I wonder, if the Starbound team has really put their all into it, all or nothing, doesnt that make this game a Swan Song game? I can name a couple that are swan song games, such as Okami and Final Fantasy I.
Even if Clover Studios DID go out of business after that little fiasco, I want to just come out and say Okami is one of the few games I will ever actually tell you is perfect, and every time I play this game I cry little tears of joy inside.
Remember Final Fantasy? They just seem like theyll never stop making games these days. Final Fantasy my face, but back then, it really WAS going to be a Final Fantasy, because Square Enix was almost bankrupt while making their game. They were going to make a last game, and they were going to put their all into it. Welcome to the result. The first game boomed, the company was saved, and a sequel was demanded. :p
Over and over and over again

So either way, you dont lose when you wait to perfect a formula.

Swan Song means its the last performance or project. Like if Tiy developed a bunch of games then Starbound was his last game before he retires then Starbound would be his Swan Song Game.

    Dwagon Hard-To-Destroy Reptile

That isn't entirely fair to DNF, because the locked version that went to market only had about 3 years of actual development on it, not 12.
Over the course of its development, DNF changed game engines at least 3 times, which means they basically had to throw away tons of developed assets and start over.
So, I don't see it as just one game that lingered in development for 12 years, but a smattering of games that were rebooted and discarded.

    DNF isn't unique here either.
Daikatana had a very similar development "schedule", jumping engines within months before its original slated launch.
Ultima 9 suffered from this as well due to EA's mandate to jump to 3D after finishing Ultima Online. (of course, by that point most of the actual talent at Origin Systems had left the company)

I believe Spoony already answered that question.
To me, the answer really is: "EA contradicted everything in lore because they thought that Ultima 9, the FINALE of a series of games, would bring in tons of new players who would need everything explained to them."
It's the only logical explanation why The Avatar acts as though he suffered severe brain damage and amnesia.

"Your knowledge of the land shall be great."
Yes, operative word being not 'great', but 'shall'. Meaning, eventually. After the developers get done explaining everything to you. I think this line was more of a warning than anything.

i cant find you the exact quote (bear with me on that one) but one of the dev wroted somewhere that some of the devs had actually putted aside stable jobs so that they could dedicate themselves fully to the development of starbound, therefore making the life of some of them, literally at stakes
