Floran Starter House...Thoughts?

So I'm not really good at pixel art type stuff, and I tried to keep this as simple as possible (so if I want to recreate this in the game, I'll have a block-by-block schematic). I know Florans are carnivorous murder-machines, but I wanted to make something cute for mine.

The grey bits are doors/stairs, light brown obviously walls, dark brown supposed to show background/depth.

Let me know what you guys think!

 

Looks cute but fragile. Maybe make thicker walls and possibly put in a basement?

 

Looks nice but imo its too square structured. (maybe cause ill make houses stupid and crazy...)

 

I'm probably going to edit it a bit more to make it less boxy and, well...bushier I guess? Haha. And I may reinforce the walls some way, maybe try to make them a bit more organic/branch-like.

 

This is actually a pretty clever idea! I never would have considered doing something like this Both designing something like this, and the fact that one could use colored blocks as 'pixel art'. I know I've seen it done before but I've never tried doing it myself.

That said, I like it looks lovely!

We know so little about the Florans right now. It's been said that they practice cannibalism and are a very tribal race whose main priorities are reproduction and food, but I think some people forget the part that their tribal nature is due to them being such a young race. They weren't all that exposed to other intelligent life and their cultural development is still 'young', and it's been said that they've shown signs that they AREN'T just murderous plant monsters.

So I think it's ENTIRELY plausible for a Floran, having been born in this new age of his/her people where space travel is possible, and the exposure to other races, to NOT be 'murderous'. It's the old argument of nature vs. nurture. A Floran growing up exposed to a more advanced civilization's concepts could totally be into cute things for their own sake.

Of course, you may want to play your character some other way ... in which case, whatever! TL;DR GOOD JOB!

 

Love the input, you guys. I like to start simple before I really start adding on to things and you guys have put all sorts of ideas in my head.

 

I just remembered what your image made me think of! It was bothering me for a bit LITE-BRITE! I just wanna follow the dots and re-create it on a Lite-Brite I used to do that ALL the time as a kid.

 

Sweet house! What do you use to make pixel art?

 

I'm using Gimp. It's not exactly pixel art, in that I set up a grid that's 8x8 pixels per box, so I can have a slightly darker outline around each "pixel." Makes it easier, when the grid is removed, to really see individual blocks. Basically, set up a grid (it helps if your image size is evenly divided by the size of your grid boxes), enable snap to grid, create your building blocks and...voila. Nothing really complicated, as I'm not really skilled at image editing or creation or anything.

 

So I messed around a little bit and tried to make the floors and walls look like they were made of branches. I'm not sure I like how it looks. I also am not sure how to make it less boxy.

 

I like that the indoor walls have a bit of color variation to them, like roots... but I DO have to wonder how it'll look in-game with bigger blocks.

Oh man, do you think we'll be able to put up vines as a decoration? I hope so +_+

 

Each square in the pic will = 1 block in game, so proportionately, not much will change. However, since every block of one type won't look exactly the same when you lay them down, I'm not entirely sure how well this will translate. I guess I'll just have to murder a million trees and hope for the best!

I would LOVE to be able to put up vines or at least use a block that vines will grow from in my design.

 

Oh, I forgot to mention that a friend told me it looked like a giant cake. Maybe uh...maybe my Floran will live in a giant tree-themed cake with cinnamon branch swirls in all the chocolate.

 

True, but I meant that your image would be a more zoomed-out version of how you'd see your house. Up close the blocks would be bigger. It's like when you look at pixel art up close vs far away, that's what I meant.

I think my starter home will be something built into the ground with a hidden/camouflaged entrance and perhaps a missle defense system if I can make one.

 

Yeah, I see what you mean now. Argh, now I'm gonna be paranoid about that and start something else, haha. Then again, the dungeons are rather large, so you won't see them in their entirety most of the time, either, so maybe my treecakething will be okay? I'm still debating on making it a permanent home or if it's just gonna stay as a pic forever.

 

It didn't really occur to me that showing a schematic for a potential home in the game would count as fan art. Other people are talking about all sorts of things they're going to do in-game, and I figured this was just an extension of that, which is why I put it in General Discussion.

 

It needs more vines, gore, and the blood of your enemies splattered all over the walls. The furnitures need to be made from the skins of your victims, and your lights should be illuminated by the dread souls of the fallen. But other than that, you're pretty spot on.
