First impression - disappointingly not enough sci-fi

Sci fi is not only defined by star wars ect.

I think it's brilliant how the game progresses. You have to earn the sci-fi stuff.

And story wise, it makes perfect sense. You narrowly escaped and are now stuck on a planet with barely anything. You may own a car, but if you were stuck in the woods with no fuel, could you build car parts?

Every time I see this complaint it basically seems to amount "I've played 5 minutes of this game and havent found high tech stuff. Therefore there mustn't be any"

If you're not far enough through to even have a drill then you're not far enough to make that determination.

Myself, I have drills, guns, high tech armour, robotic crafting table... and my friends have even more outlandish shit like morphball, jetpacks and anti gravity bubbles.

In conclusion, there's heaps of sci-fi stuff in this game, but it doesn't just hand it to you on a silver platter. You need to tech up and you need to explore.

the beta, is about giving feedback not just enjoying the ride. They want feedback so who are you to stand in the way of someone who gives it? this is beta is not any sort of defense against criticism, they want criticism it is why they released a public beta in the first place

My bad. I guess it is I who misunderstand the idea of this beta. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I was posting about my first impression of the game. I didn't think it was appropriate posting it in another thread.

That's cool and I'm looking forward to finding all those things! I haven't played the game for very long, but that's why my post is called "First Impression" and not "What I think after beating the beta". In retrospect I was too judgmental in my language, but that literally is my initial impression after a spending a good amount of my time smelting ore, upgrading my pickaxe, and crafting copper armor. I've played too much Terraria to enjoy the deja vu.

Later tiers will have more "sci-fi" stuff.

You work your way up from stone tools.

No need for putting hyperbole in my mouth. I spent a good part of my weekend playing the game. I spent that time doing nearly the same stuff I did when playing Terraria. I didn't think the beginning to this sci-fi themed game would be that similar to Terraria. Ergo my disappointing first impression.

Well yes, if you don't leave the confines of your first planet, you might get that impression. But high-tech loot is all across the place, it is entirely possible to get a gun before you craft the distress beacon. The questline atm is a bit misleading, you don't need the starmap upgrade to leave the planet, just fuel up the ship. So far I've seen at least 4 types of grenades, if I count the molotovs, and a host of other bits and pieces. Energy Javelins, an avian thrown weapon that turns into a huge fireball, and so on. Also the next patch will include turrets for crafting it seems :)

And sorry if I sounded a bit harsh, but we do get a "not hard scifi" enough thread every 2-3 days and it just feels that it could be a lot more organized if people would post in those threads instead of making new ones every day.

Bottom line is, we really should let them get to stage 2, before we start assessing just how scifi this game is going to be. Right now the late tiers are insaleny compressed and you basically can skip 5-9 with a bit of running away and mining. But the pixel printer, and the portable version already allow you to make modern furniture, so who knows what's in the pipeline.

How do you not understand that what a beta thrives on is criticism?

I made an account specifically for your post. Beta does NOT mean what way too many teens who grew up with Notch and his Minecraft thieving think it means. Get it through your skull. This stage of the game NEEDS input, not blind acceptance like many people think it does. If they had anything like this planned, they surely would have posted about it. They didn't, so this is valid criticism from my point of view. Next time, try to come up with some real arguments instead of parroting the next guy.

If this game isn't sci-fi enough for you, then you must not have played it at all.... First of all, every civilization / person has to start somewhere, you START with pickaxes, then progress into drills, etc. I have 30 hours in(about 15 is AFK hours... fell asleep while playing :p) and Iv'e already explored many planets, found Alien droids with force fields, space pirates with blaster rifles and energy swords, alien planets that get warm at night and cold during the day, etc.... If the game doesn't "have enough" for you, then you haven't tried playing it.

There are drills in the game.... nobody STARTS with hyper technological power drills and stuff, from a REALISTIC survival point of view you have to start BASIC.

Well I for one have played it 30 hours nearly straight recently, and I still can't get enough of it, this game for me is much more addicting than Terraria or Minecraft ever were. I think maybe you people aren't giving it a chance.

This is pathetic. You obviously weren't. You tried to make fun of him in a cynical, nasty way for offering valid criticism with a severely overused reaction image from LOGH. Don't try to backpedal now, that's just sad.

First of all, seeing as this game itself among many other great games are based on minecraft, which is in itself a great game, I don't appreciate the slandering. You could make your point without needing to bring up any comparisons to any other games. Second of all, input is fine, but blatantly complaining about something that in no way helps the games development whatsoever is a bit unnecessary and makes it harder to find threads that actually MATTER. Also just because they didn't post about it doesn't mean it's not planned, it could just mean they have it planned for LATER, aka after the next patch, maybe even 2 or 3 patches down the road. Also it's not called "blind acceptance" If you play a game and have fun with it, and don't see anything to complain about, that just means you are enjoying it without being overly critical, you aren't "blindly accepting" anything.

Btw, sure this is beta, feedback is NICE But you people seem to forget... this isn't a FREE beta... we PAYED real MONEY for it. So we do DESERVE to just "enjoy the ride" as you put it.

No, you don't. You paid for the finished game, not for the beta access which was given to you free with your pre-order.

Any program testing is not always fun and it is usually not meant to be fun.

I'm just calling it like I see it. When Minecraft first got viraled on several game forums I bought the game to see what it was about. I've always liked the game but absolutely DESPISED the fanbase and Notch, but that's not what we're here to talk about.

What are the threads that "matter" to you? The bug threads? All bug reports should be contained in one stickied thread. That pretty much only leaves complaints of other natures or suggestions. This is a combination of the two. I have to admit I haven't even really thought about Starbound as a sci-fi genre game before I saw this thread. I get the robot middle ages thing and I like it, and if I really tried I could probably come up with reasons why the other races don't have advanced stuff, but that doesn't matter. At this point in time I have to agree with the OP. Starbound is off to a great, GREAT start but it still needs a lot of fleshing out and I believe that threads like these help with that.

"Joking"(read: nasty bashing of someone who offers their support) or posting unfunny reaction images does NOT.

Furthermore, if you don't see anything wrong with the game, that's great! I hope you have a lot of fun playing it. Some people, however, do. They should be allowed to voice their opinions without blatant ridicule from some teenage boy or girl who doesn't have the slightest idea what the beta stage means. And that was my real issue with what was going on here.
