I know how you feel bro, probably starbound is not going to work well in my actual PC (he is a monster, but recently my GPU burned) i am so worried about this...

The lights? What lights? The music is awesome, I hope that's actually in the game because it fits while exploring.

I'm still amazed even if it's just a 50 second video showing light.. Here's hoping he uploads more videos this week. :D

So far everything we know about the video and things Tiy and Rho said about it are...

    • 0-9 will quick switch left hand item, and Shift+0-9 will switch out right hand.
    • A Flashlight you can aim with your mouse.
    • Many items will be placeable directly ON the background so you wont have to always attach a torch to the "player layer" walls.
    • There will be Flashlight mods for some weapons. - "Rho_"
    • Items will have an outline color in the UI to show their rarity. If you look in the lighting demo video you will see 3 items are in green hot-bar boxes.
    • Blocks have variations in their appearance so they don't all look exactly the same. Especially noticeable in single blocks that are not touching others.

I suppose it says something that we can all get so excited about something so simple like a tech demo, even me...

Anyway, let me get my GT Popblock on:

    - First, the obvious. The lighting engine appears to be equal or better then Terraria, particularly in the way light is blocked by certain objects (like as we see in the end with the torch ringed by the rocks.)

    - The flashlight provides a nice cone effect, I can see that generating a few good scares exploring a "corruption" themed planet of sorts. Though hopefully Starbound's Travellers are advanced enough to at least duct tape flashlights to the barrels of their rifles. Or that we will have light sources that would allow our hands to remain free for mining and the time honored sport of xeno-stomping (a flying robotic lantern or a mining helmet perhaps?)

    - Surprisingly, unlike most Youtube videos, the quality does not decrease when we go full screen. In fullscreen mode we can see that blocks have at least a 1000 unit limit. More importantly we can see four items in the first half of the hot bar. "1" appears to be some kind of assault rifle, perhaps the Alien-esque pulse rifle we see in several screen shots. "2" is the flashlight itself. "3" looks like a mining pick of some kind (hopefully only the starting tool, I'd hate to see the potential for mining lasers and drills wasted but that's just me,) while "4" is clearly a fish; possibly an ingredient or a health item of some kind.

you know the music is nyan cat orquestrated right? i don't think this music will be in the game...

Good lighting and good music, the game is well on its way to being great.

Though a simple lighting video it has shown us so much already! Not only can we see how similar the planet-walking part of the game is to Terraria we can also see how much it differs, especially the interface and the characters movements. Not to mentions the shadowing and lighting from both refular torches and the directional torch wielded by our blonde explorer. My mind is too blown to come up with a more intelligent response beyond stating the obvious. Please give me a moment...

I keep imagining that I am playing the game while watching the lighting demo. (I might be cracking here) I started to yell at the avatar to harvest the ore that was passed up while pounding furiously on the keyboard...

Absolutely glorious. Can't wait to see more, namely surface exploration and combat.

I agree that this footage is fantastic.
Simply walking through an empty cave with a flashlight, and we can learn so much.
It should be noted that the music is beautiful, and the characters are very naturally animated when moving through the enviroment,
The lighting just blows my mind.

"<kyren> the directional light of the torch takes < 1% cpu" ;)

edit: of course i cant promise what the final version of the game will be like but it runs fine on my 6 year old laptop right now..

Reading the description on the youtube video it says that Tiy cleared out a cave to show off the lighting. Does that mean he killed the monsters in the cave or does it mean he used his coding powers to eliminate them? If it is that he killed them off do monsters then have a long respawn timer or not respawn at all?

He has mentioned that planets are supposed to be a throwaway experience. It may follow that monsters don't really respawn and are generated with the planet.

The music that is used in the demo video, is it music that comes from the game?

Someone said that it was Nyan Chat orchestrated. Don't know how true that is, though.
