...Did you guys dig very deep? I was finding a ludicrous amount of iron ore as I got much deeper into the planet. You guys aren't thinking critically.

I tried digging around for a gun on higher risk planets, had no such luck.

Uh, no. Certain planets don't have certain commodities. Arid doesn't have trees. God forbid you start the beta there, because you can't make the crafting table. I dug down very, very far and never found iron.

I'm seriously confused as to why in gods name people think they can take the first boss with only copper armor or NO armor what so ever...

I beat him my first try, though i was lucky and found two plasma grenades in a human research facility that each took a bar of life off him, so i got a free 20%. Also, what are people thinking using the bow as a primary weapon to fight it, we all know the bow is total trash! Also, the UFO will stick around if you beam down after being killed fast enough. I managed to do it my very first try with very little difficulty...

He just pissed off after like a minute. I was only armed with Silver Armor, an Iron Bow and a Tiny Tomahawk.
Sigh. Good thing I mined the sin out of that planet for ore, as I haven't found jack shit for useful tech save for a Pulse Jump.

the difficulty of this boss is insane. we were two players both of us equipped with iron armor (silver is very hard to find on our planet) and we had no chance whatsoever. after having played for 6 hours we decided to postpone playing the game until this is fixed.

I just took on the boss with a group of four people, each with AT LEAST Copper armor, and it was a difficult fight. I will admit, the instant death laser attack is RATHER cheap, but with a group you will always stand a larger chance.

That was the only way I could kill him. I have an ax that does 59 damage + poison damage. I also had like 10 molotov cocktails to throw at him.

The initial confusion is due to him being the next in a series of incredibly basic quests. It's not a very large leap of logic to assume that he's the "end of tutorial" boss, and after getting 1hit killed it feels a bit like being cheated out of the resources used to summon him.

Still, even with that in mind... Do you have any suggestions for what weapons to use in a legitimate fight, if not the bow? Walling him in like in the above post is nice and all, but is clearly an abuse of game mechanics and not an actual valid means of killing him. Melee weapons are out of the questions, as he flies well above that range... so the only guaranteed access to a ranged weapon is the bow. What, praytell, did you use?

I plan on making a hiltop my battle ground. Make two 'wings' to dodge around and a tunnel system under/through it.

One trick seem to be digging yourself a sniper pit with a small hole to shoot up from. Works okay as long as you don't get trapped down there. (From early vids.)

I assume you set up the beacon in the center of the 'pit' after you make it?

Well, i did it the hard way. I tried fighting it without capturing it in mind, so we just fought on top of my house for awhile. Then I tried to pin him in, which took several tries. any time I needed health I'd go sleep in my bed while the little penguins were shooting at my door. I never died though. But to answer your question, no I did not set the beacon in there. What you have to do is build the U shape part and then when it smashes you, immediately put about 2 blocks above him and then he can't move. He'll also stop attacking you when he's trapped. It's cheap, but this boss is hard as hell.

Let me explain the major problem with this boss: You're stuck with level 5ish gear, and have to fight a level 10 flying boss with it.

The bosses exist to provide a challenge between tiers. Tier 1 ends with a mixture of iron armaments and silver armor, designed to give you a good chance of handling a few level 5 monsters. To enter the next tier, you have to defeat a level 10 boss along with what I assume are level 10 adds, judging from the crap damage my broadsword did. The iron bow does almost exactly the same damage as the broadsword, but the movement debuff while pulling the bow back makes you a very easy target for squishing (in other words, you WILL get squished for using a bow, and probably for using a broadsword.)

As pointed out so far, with this balance there are only two methods to defeat this boss: Abusing game mechanics, or just plain luck.

How lucky do you need to be? I thoroughly searched two planets, including a deadly snow planet (since tier 1 does not give warm armor) for anything to give me the edge I needed. I could not find anything.

Basically, you require Tier 2 or Tier 3, maybe even Tier 4 gear to battle this boss the way he was supposed to be. His current balance is only useful for keeping beta players from going beyond tier 1, though I doubt that's the intention. If he's to remain Tier 1's boss, even temporarily, a severe nerfing needs to take place.

The deeper you go, the more and more Iron you find. Losing the beacon doesn't really become an issue after a while. I'll cop that he is a bit tough, though.

Beat it with an iron bow. If it gets stuck changeing elevations it will frezze or at least that happened with me

If you wanna just get past it to see what's next, edit D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Starbound\assets\monsters\unique\penguinUfo\penguinUfo.monstertype. Set its health to whatever you like.

As much as I love challenge in my games, I have to agree with this. The first boss was very brutal, I didn't last very long. I wouldn't have minded so much if I was able to keep my beacon, but it's destroyed when the boss is summoned. This sucks because I'd been spending my entire game up until that point accumulating the resources required to build it, so I felt disheartened. Add to the fact that I got stranded on a desert planet with a lack of fuel (which I actually found really exciting xD), I wasn't able to return home to try and recuperate.

I think another large part of why this boss fight is so jarring is because it's one of your earlier missions to fight him, when really it seems like maybe the last thing you're supposed to do at the end of tier 1. Perhaps you should get a mission that asks you to travel to another planet first? I wasn't even aware we were able to do that yet until I tried it on a whim.
