First boss too complicated

Even with the best armor, red stim packs, food, and bandages to heal, plus an array of weapons. I cannot beat the first boss. I have no problem getting to it but the laser patterns, healing and platform jumping are quite complex and frustrating when you have to run through the whole mine again. I might have beaten it if I could try back to back but it takes ~10-30 minutes to get to the bottom and try (die). I reached level 9 in unstable with less trouble than this first boss in stable. Cut me some slack here

Skip the monsters and just run back, takes about 2 minutes. Get yourself a shield, block right as the laser is about to hit you and if you do it right the shield won't take any damage. If the shield does go down you can also block laser damage by parrying with a 2-handed sword.

The first couple patterns are easy to avoid it's the 3rd one you will almost always get hit on. (only a couple tiny safe spots.)

I agree, It is a bit too unforgiving, especially this early in the game. The addition of a check point beacon outside the boss chamber would be lessen it a bit, lowering the damage and adding something to block the beam at a few points would help too. The platforming is a bit awkward (especially since moving away from the cursor is slower now) and the enemy spawning is obnoxious. I like the mission format, it add to the gameplay and story but the boss at the end is kind of ruining it for me, especially since I have to replay the whole mission every time I fail with the boss.

I have to agree. Its weird to see a monster this early in a game that is hard. Sorry its not easy OK. Anyone who says that..well idk, your wierd. you have to use the switches 3 times in a row to defeat him thats a bit harsh considering the monster is the first one after the beginning. At one point the lasers goes faster than you. I don't know about everyone but until now I didn't succeed and its my 5th try. To tell you honestly, I'm starting to get fed up with this game already. And why the hell can't I spawn near the boss ? I don't care for shortcuts and all or that it takes 2 minutes. It's very very annoying. I do like the way you have to defeat him but its just a tad to hard for the beginning imo. I would expect that a bit later on but this is ridiculous.

Anyways, thats my rant on this boss and I have to admit if theres a way to cheat my way around I will. the way you have to defeat him is very annoying.

I have the same experience with this boss but then i discovert by accident. that you can go under the lowest platform in the chamber, then the boss just stops. it may not look like you are safe down there becuse the lasers go through the platform, but when you get below it the boss will get out off the screen and then he will not fire lassers or spawn those aliens. and then you have all the time to heal up and plan you next move.

i hope this will help you kill that annoying boss.

This boss isn't one you really beat to death with a stick. You can get two shots in on him without even tripping one laser, and finish each cycle before it spawns additional monsters. It's only when prepping the third shot do you have to run through a laser or two.

It's not hard; it just requires cleverness. You're not there to fight, you're there to survive.

Gonna have to agree here. I've taken about four shots at this first boss now. LOVE the dungeon, very atmospheric. Found the hammer miner monsters tough at first, but figured out how to cheese fight them. But the combination of a luck-based, trial-and-error boss room, coupled with NO checkpoints whatsoever, is outrageous. It reminds me of some of the old LJN movie-to-game ports on the NES where you were expected to go through the entire game on one life.

I'm fine with a challenge. And I'm fine with not being hand-held. I'd even possibly be able to tolerate the boss two-shotting you if there was a checkpoint right before it to let you figure out the pattern. The rest of the mining base dungeon is absolutely fantastic, and everything up TO that point is all I've ever hoped for out of Starbound, but this is really nuts. It's a relief to see I'm not the only one having this problem.

This isn't about whether we're supposed to "beat to death with a stick". I'm fine with a tactical boss. I LIKE puzzle-bosses. But for a mandatory, early-game boss encounter this is absurdly unforgiving.

Please, Chuckleguys, if you're reading this: All we ask is some friggin' checkpoints.

Or maybe another way to get the crystals and go to other systems.

I'd agree a checkpoint would be a good idea, yes.

If the bed before the boss could serve as a checkpoint, that would make it easier for people.

And a tip for the third laser phase, just stand above or below the boss, the lasers won't hit you there.

Pumpkin_Masher and Xxahcc were right about the shield and going under the bottom platform. There is no way I would have beat the boss without pretty much pausing the battle every time I needed to heal and recover my shield. Even with stim packs and tons of bandages it felt like unrealistic. I just hope I don't have to do all that again

Yeah, I was eventually able to do the same thing but it felt more like a cheap trick rather than a clever strategy.

It is not that the boss itself was bad but it was too difficult too early. I think it was more interesting boss than a big guy with the extra large health bar in earlier version but it could have been executed much better.

So the first boss fight is lacking. The trick with switches is nice and all but I expected to use switches to disable armor of the boss for some time and after that I could shoot at it to reduce its HP.
Right now I was surprised the fight ended without me doing anything. Lasers are easy do dodge so it needs to be changed. Boss should have 2 kinds of attacks and the way of fighting it I mentioned above. Right now its not even a boss.

Having the Double Jump tech helps A LOT.
In addition, you can take advantage of the fact that he has a long animation when he takes a shot, if you have the Double Jump tech you can activate two of the switches before he even start to spam the lasers. It is just a matter of knowing the boss, I died only once and beat him on the second try because knew what he was going to do.

I dissagree that the boss is to complicated, its honestly very easy if you do it right. However a checkpoint in the room with the bed (before dropping down to face the boss) might be a good idea regardless.

    i don't see a need for a checkpoint.
the place under the boss is a "safe spot" if you stay there the boss turns off his lasers and does nothing, so you can easily turn on the bottom 2 leavers.

i beat the boss at my 3rd try (without knowing of the safe zone, without techs) and then the game crashed -.-
so i had to do it again ... but i don't see a problem with running through the dungeon over and over if you have died before.
btw ... you can find in the dungeon a granade launcher (1H) which 2 hits all the monsters, and does aoe damage ... with such a weapon its easy to go through the dungeon

First people complain the game is getting to easy. Then they get a challenge, most asked for and complain they want it to be more easy. :p
I took it down on 2nd try, solo. All I did was equipping a shield and use the shield tech I unlocked prior the mission. Easy peasy.
So please try doing that people, instead of just trying to zerg the boss down.

The real issue is that it's such a pain to get back to the boss, and it's a pattern based boss. I think 90% of the frustration would go away if there was a way to just restart the boss, because then you could /learn/ the /pattern/ and defeat it. Which is the whole point. I was loving Starbound until I had to re-do the boss dungeon again - it went from an interesting mission to suddenly a long slog, and I think that's where the negativity comes from. I hate redoing content I've already completed once.

Then don't play games in beta? It's been said over and over again over the past 1 year, that wipes will happen. And it will happen again and probably again after that.

the problem with that is that safe spot is: one) not immediately obvious (the lasers normally cut through the platform, so most players will naturally avoid going under the it). and two) it's clearly an exploit and not part of the intended fight/puzzle design.

also, just because you personally had no issue with the fight doesn't mean other players won't. most players will find it understandably frustrating having to dredge through a long dungeon to face a challenge they've yet to fully understand, fail that challenge, and repeat the entire process.

i think it is quite fair for people to want of a checkpoint before the boss. especially since starbound is meant primarily as an exploration/adventure game, not a pure twitch combat/challenge game.

While i found the boss easy too i would like the point out that its impossible to get the "sheild tech" at this point in the game without cheating.
