Finally found a way to "get ahead"!

So, one of my biggest problems with Starbound is that, with the tiered structure and linear progression of the game, I found it to be damn near impossible to "get ahead". I remember digging down in Terraria and grabbing some components for weaponry after about 100 deaths, that finally made the zombies on the surface easy-sauce and felt VERY proud of myself... never could find that in Starbound, that feeling of accomplishment... but now I've found it, and I wish it had been available to me all along!

Opened up Sector X by beating the endomorphic jellyfish whatever-guy who liked peanut butter...
Immediately went to a 10th level planet...
Died no less than 45 times, getting one-shotted by the enemies there...
Came across a Tough Mob with the red sparkles...
Trapped him in a cave and cut a hole about eye-leve...
Immediately died as he spit some stuff at me that killed me in one-hit...
Went back and rebuilt his prison to try to make it impossible for him to kill me...
    Died 12 more times...
Finally got it right and started chipping away at his health, 99 points at a time...
That bastard had 20,000 health, but after 202 hits with my axe...
He went poof and dropped a 1-handed sword...
THAT DOES 1,984 DAMAGE PER HIT...
Went back to Level FIVE planets to look for Aegisalt???
Oh man, it was a slaughter!!!

Felt like I actually accomplished something.

Anyone ever do the same thing?

Yup. I was getting killed constantly trying to jump tiers to get some upper level equipment. I mean, I was getting creative trying to evade enemies. Finally I went on the coordinate thread and found a legendary Bonehammer.

    Problem solved.

All you gotta do is find a shield and a T10 weapon salesman and mine as much ore as possible on T8-9 planets. Only make ore helmets.

I remember wearing nothing but sprout leggings, a cool jacket, and a glitch crown until I went on a T10 planet. Let me just say those USCM roombas are terrifying.

  6. "2k per hit"
Son, you've nearly scratched the surface of the damage.
Wait til' you get your hands on 5k+ per swing weapons, now THAT is pretty cool!

I actually don't do that, I kinda like climbing up normally. It is fun juking everything and mining for dear life, but that's mostly because on some playthroughs I don't always upgrade my armor from tier 5 onwards.

Oh, I WILL get there, TvK!

I just wish I didn't have to slog through the linearity of the first four Sectors! I want to be FREEEEEE!

I just head for a level 10 planet with an airship, then buy myself a gun and a melee weapon. Once I had to dig my way to the ship because the enemies on the surface were killing me in one hit, but now that access tunnel is there for all my future characters,

No, no, this is the internet, so you're a special snowflake.

Personally, I don't go to T10 planets immediately. I go to a planet system that has T5, T7, and T10 planets in it. I go in order, but only make weapons if I have extra T6 or T8 ores (and I generally don't). Then, when I get to the T10 planet, I look for an asteroid field, bring tons of dirt blocks, and proceed to mine 214 Rubium Ore. 80 ore -> Rubium upgrade, 134 ore -> 67 Impervium bars -> Full Impervium armor. Sometimes, I even go for 234 Rubium Ore to get two weapons.

I found a legendary teir 9 sword that made the rest of the game easy mode. 1,660 per hit, and it shots out a mini-explosion for another 1,660.

if you have characters in impervium I like to craft a decent t10 hammer or sword and drop it in a care package with some spare ore on a new character's planet.

trivializes the bosses even more than walling them in, lol

gr8tn3ss What do you get if you multiply six by nine?

I prefer to work my way up. OHK'ing everything is not as much fun to me. I may skip a tier by immediately crafting the upgrade once I have enough bars though.

Oh yes! I got a Bonehammer with 2995 Damage and thought "I have Excalibur!"

Then a Glitch King dropped his 3500 Damage sword, and Excalibur gathers dust....

i think that is a fun tactic, shame you can't use any of the ores until you are "supposed" to, when i did that i went to a snow planet and dug across the planet a few blocks below the surface to explore and be safe

You can get ahead early game if you find matter blocks to make, makeshift armor.
You can also get places with creature capturing

But its a lot easier to go to a level ten planet and chest hunt. Than fight a mini boss.

Sometimes you can get a getting ahead feeling when you are in sand or gravel and hit a motherload.

All you have to do is skip to a T10 planet as soon as you unlock sector X, find that one chest with a weapon in it, and you're set to just go back to a T5 and 1-shot everything as you collect ores to unlock the rest of the tiers.
