So exactly as I remember. Areas with more mobs(spider caves), furniture(statues, some can actually be used), a couple of subbiomes(mushroom fields, marble biomes, underground desert, tundra, jungle, beehive). And then there's underworld which is just a long empty stripe with lava floor and nigh-identical towers lined up across the entire game world. Not even close to Starbound's variety.
The underworld's towers are much more varied in 1.3 (many of the structures are not even towers now), and there's a new panoramic background in the underworld that gives it much more lively feel to it. They also gave it a much better BGM, too. And I dunno where you're getting this "variety" in Starbound from... the last 5 planets I delved into, I saw an occasional wooden crate here, a wooden crate there, or perhaps a tiny speck of an avian tomb over there, and if I got REALLY lucky I'd see an uninhabited underground house that looks pristine even though there's nobody living in it, with fresh fruit and everything, lol. Though, I suppose on Snow Worlds, there are arcade machine rooms deep underground for apparently no reason... that always made me scratch my head going "Uh, okay?" Or if you go down far enough, you might see copper&stone houses with wooden crates, but if you find those, you can tell that they are definitely copypasta because there are only 2-3 different kinds.
From the top of my head - avian tombs, floran prisons, glitch castles, human prisons, apex villages, apex research centers. Those are on the ground. Underground there are natural caves, crystal laboratories, excavation sites, USCM thingy, sewer dungeon. Surely I've missed some, as you mentioned arcade machine rooms and underground houses. Not to mention the biomes - snow, forest, desert, barren, ocean, savannah, moon(I'm guessing it's a biome), volcanic, midnight, jungle... Surely there are more I missed. Take away the ones Terraria has and you get barren, savannah, moon, volcanic, midnight. Terraria has mushroom and corruption/crimson, so take another two down. You still have extra 3, and I'm sure I didn't even mention all the biomes. Look at how much Terraria has added since 1.0, yet it's still less than Starbound pre-1.0.
I dunno if you have some kind of chip on your shoulder against Terraria, but seriously, dude, there's no need for the bashing. You're forgetting that most of these places in Starbound don't even exist on a given planet, and it is uncommon to get more than 2-3 surface structures (many worlds having zero). Though they do promise more varied biomes in Starbound, which would be nice to see... but right now on Live, you visit, say, a Forest planet and that's what you get -- an entire planet of nothing but forest. Frackin'Universe changes that up a bit, but it is still bare-bones at best. You need to go hopping to other planets to see more, which is a feature of the game, but yet at the same time, it makes each planet seem that much more bland. As for the villages, well. You complain about Terraria's towers being all the same... the villages suffer heavily from copypasta as well. Perhaps even moreso. You can literally walk through, say, an Avian building and go "Building #1... Building #2... another Building #1... another Building #2.... oh there's a Building #3... another Building #2..." Hopefully they add more variety to the number of buildings in the future or something. USCM bunkers are even worse, they are literally the same, every single time you see one, it's the exact same layout. As are Avian Towers. Silliness is one thing, but there's that type of silliness that just goes into senselessness. Arcades, sure. Arcades 500 feet below the ground with no way to access the building, no doors or anything? lol? That doesn't even remotely make sense. And let's talk about loot for a second.... 99% of these underground structures (or worse, the surface ones) have nothing worthwhile. A wheat here, a couple flares there, maybe a climbing rope over there. Oh, that had 10 pixels in it. Sometimes you'll find MM Modules, or an Upgrade Module... or perhaps a weapon that is almost always worse than what you already had, but the majority of the boxes and chests found in these structures are just utterly worthless. That's one thing I liked in Terraria -- even if you wait until way near the end of the game, and you stumble upon a gold chest in the underground, there's at least a 75% chance that chest will contain SOMETHING valuable to you. They almost always have money, or an item worth a reasonable amount of money, or resources, or useful potions. Can't tell you how many Spelunker Potions I've found in chests that I'm constantly using in Hardmode Jungle, for example. Or Suspicious-Looking Eyes (Wait until night, use it, kill insanely easy boss with the gear you have at that point, sell all the drops for a nice chunk of gold). In Starbound, we have these 9, 12, 16 slot containers... and they have 1-2 worthless items in them. Terraria... you never find a chest with less than 5 items in it.
Wonderful! My long wait to play this game at 1.0 will not be for too much longer. Starbound does still need balance changes and polish since it's not even 1.0 yet. But Terraria has had years to do post-content stuff and updates.
I never said otherwise. I really do hope they make loot more interesting, though. Flares, Climbing Ropes, a couple bandages.... I can't really say that I'm all too thrilled to find that kind of junk in 90% of all the crates I open. They really need to get a system that puts better loot in more dangerous areas. Going to an Extreme planet and finding three crates in an underground building with just flares, ropes, and normal bandaids is just "eh.... okaaaay", lol. The only reason I bother, is because I'm hoping for modules and/or ore.
Technically you can. When I played with 2 friends, we used my ship as our base, and they each had a room there. You can teleport to a party member's ship at any time, and you have full access to building. Or if you want, you could even make a spaceship-looking thing in an asteroid field, and place a teleporter there to act as a ship-like thing. Doesn't get you places, but works as a "theme".
So, there's no way to protect your ship and your stuff in multiplayer? Never did multiplayer, but that seems kinda "uh, okay, that means I ain't never joining a public server".
Only those in your party can enter your ship, but yeah, unfortunately there's currently no way to protect your ship. If you're in a party then even your home planet isn't safe if you decide to visit it. The teleporter has a choice to directly teleport to wherever your party member is.
Yet another of the many things they need to fix, apparently. I hate to bring Terraria up again... but Terraria had the personal on-character "hidden" inventories with the Piggybank and Safe that cannot be touched by anybody else, ever, not even in Multiplayer, not even if you're in the same team. That way I wouldn't have to worry about someone stealing my stuff. But with SB, looks like there's no way to keep stuff safe unless you're good at hiding things, or you could just never join someone's group... but that kinda defeats the purpose of coop multiplayer. Hopefully they eventually fix that, and give a player some means to "lock" at least storage items, if not the entire ship. Perhaps a security terminal on the ship, or something that locks everything down to everybody but yourself.
That, I agree. We do need the equivalent of the Piggy Bank and Safe. Which are basically a separate Inventory Screen tab outside of your character's.
Well to be fair, we already have 3 inventory tabs, but with the sheer amount of inventory spam in this game compared to Terraria, it doesn't help much. I kinda wish they'd come up with ways to more easily manage inventory, or perhaps reduce clutter (such as my earlier ideas about being able to combine different colors/types of dirt/stone).
I noticed they changed their site page today. Does this mean cheerful girraffe might be almost ready?
Starbound could definitely borrow Terraria's approach of being detailed with the biomes and less barebones. For example: Even if it's just recolors of the current biome-specific monsters with different stats, that's something. Sayter had shadow poptops in his mods, so there's one free idea for a poptop variant. Also, I'd love to see Starbound having variants on the corruption/crimson/mushroom/hallow. Not blatant ripoffs, but taking the basic themes and making it SF instead of fantasy. That and going on the Terraria forum and "borrowing" ideas from the more thought out biome proposals on there. Anyways, I'm hoping we see the new multi-biome worlds leading to new combo biomes/sub-biomes. Would be a good excuse to bring back grassland to go with forest/desert. There's some "flower fields" subbiome, s why not up that to full biome status, slap in some deciduous trees and have as the other potential starter biome for variety.
Did they add in the cold system? I'm more old school and don't really enjoy all the suits you easily require, I miss having to make a shelter in a sandstorm and a fire in a blizzard. It would be cool if you got clothing bonuses, for example like after searching desert planets enough you find that certain desert clothing, it would be cool if after finding it all you could wear it and it would give you a bonus like move easily through sandstorms. Also I wish you could have starvation and not drop your items on death. But all in all I think I will get over it for how many new features there are!
