I don't have a slime hutch, but I'm raising slimes with the slime press and incubator.

My problem is, I can't seem to fence in the slimes so they stay in one area of the farm. I've tried putting every fence type around them with no gaps, openings, or gates, and the slimes still get out during the night.

Has anyone successfully raised slimes without a hutch and had them relegated to one area rather than running anywhere and everywhere?

Yes. The farm cave is good for raising slimes, especially if you pick bats as your bonus perk when Demetrius asks. They cannot leave the cave even if the entrance remains unblocked. Because of the imprecise nature of monster spawns, slimes raised in an outdoor pen can always get out, no matter how many layers of protection you add. However, some farm maps that have natural barriers-- say, an island on a the fishing map or one of the craggy areas of hilltop or wilderness map-- might give you better results.
