I think the poof of smoke is kind of charming in a way, think along the ways of Zelda and you're good to go!

Wasn't able to watch the original stream, but recently watched the video.

I think the puff of smoke thing is fine. It's good enough that it gave off the "you got the job done" feeling. The body part explosion was fine for something like Terraria, but Starbound has it's own style. The body part explosions in the early Starbound videos I saw seemed a touch crude. The puff of smoke has a more polished feel. That's my take, anyway.

id personally like it if the death of things left a corpse behind, a corpse that would stay and ragdoll in the world, but could also be asploded, disintegrated, or burned into ashes to remove

expanding on that, i think that different forms of death should come from different projectiles
maybe lasers could disintegrate things, explosives would blow them up, flame/chemical throwers would turn them into ash, swords and chainsaws could leave body parts lying around, and bullets and arrows would just leave corpses lying around that you may or may not wish to deal with

It's alright. Never been a huge fan of gory animations, but maybe this death animation could be a bit better. That said, I don't think that means going all-out on gore.

I like it better than the regular dismemberment which looked a little dull. I still think there's room for improvement though.

The poof seems too much like from some mobile game app which needs to be scanty on sprites/graphics. I don't like it tbh, it just doesn't blend in with the rest of the game :(

I was kinda meh about it... If it is infact the death animation for the 'less gore-y' option then it is fine, but yeah not my favorite. Not bad enough to say it should be replaced, but not good enough for me to say I like it.

Because people, by nature, are easily obsessed by the small things. Because such a thing is new to them and they will automatically dislike it because it's different or seems 'out of place' to them. The human brain works in various odd ways.

Don't like it, preferred when they exploded into gibs exclusively. That at least made sense, rather than flashing and vanishing in a puff of cartoon smoke like an SNES RPG, which doesn't make sense in any context. If they're sold on the new animation, I hope they put it in the options so I can change it; I would much rather have exploding enemies than this.

I dont like it one bit...

It breaks the immersion even more than the old one ! I'd have kept the monsters flying to pieces, but just improved it. Add some blodd here, more pieces there, more effects here, and make the pieces lay on the ground then fade after a couple seconds and you have a really nice death animation. This POOF is ridiculously unrealistic. I'm not saying it's not well done though, I enjoy the effect quite a bit, but it feels out of place. Maybe do both at the same time ? The poof and the monsters exploding with the previously mentionned effects would be nice...

And for those saying that it won't matter in the end anyways because we'll just get used to it, I strongly disagree. These things (death animation, the way guns feel and shoot, the overall effects, art and so on) are what gives the game it's flavor. For something like monster death animation which we will se basicly all the time, it can really drag me out of the game if it's not well done. I''d get over it, but add other effects I strongly don't like (the poison effect thing and the ugly dammage numbers) and I think the combat needs a lot of work to feel more alive and organic.

I hate to compare to Terraria, but even if the effects in terraria are not complicated, they do feel organic and give a nice flavor to the game. I think that's one thing that Starbound is missing combat wise.

When you kill a monster, it needs to be immediately obvious that it's dead. Having a death animation where the monster pauses and then explodes is going to feel very strange.

Why would they spend time making a placeholder to replace another placeholder?

People often use "placeholder" to mean work in progress. :) I think that's more in line with what it is.

And good points to the several response I got. :D

I would rather the animation be something like this:

    player shoots enemy
    enemy dies
falls apart (like they used to from older streams)
parts slowly disappear after about 3 secs

this makes more sense to me anyway.

I prefer the explosion of bits when the enemy gets gibbed :p

Personally, the lil explosion poof thing seems so much like something you'd see out of a K-8 computer game.
I don't think we need gratuitous gore or anything but something more than the enemy farting and ninja-vanishing.

I like the idea of a No-Gore mode because there are probably quite a few younger people playing this game and a lot of them probably have parents who are possibly against gore. I remember one person back in Terraria couldn't play because his parents found the game too gorey and thus couldn't play it unless he could remove the dismemberment.

So kudos to Tiy of thinking ahead.

I prefer if they did the standard death graphics/animations like Terraria, chunks of it flying about with a spray of blood and staying on the ground where the bits landed, made the combat feel more... meaty.

This sort of puff death can be for no gore mode, but I want my bloody giblets by Jove!
