  2. I don't really mind the new animation. I honestly think it'd be cool if the monster fell over and slowly faded away, or just faded out of the screen.

Well in the stream it did say explosion test, maybe he was just testing it on the monsters? Cause He said that the last thing was just a placeholder, what if it's the same for this? P.S I didn't read the entire topic.

I've voted No, because this animation seems strange. In SciFi universe, exploding after being hit by sword is strange.
But the main problem is that it is too long. It is hard to see, that the enemy actually already dead. Also I think I saw that during the dying animation bullets pierce through the dead monster. Which looks really strange.
All that drawbacks can be mitigated if animations will be made very short.

Well i think one of 2 things need happen here there should be more than one death animation base on what it is killed by and i think the smoke on its own is abit weird maybe if the enemies did something like fall down or something else with the smoke it would be ok but just on its own it really doesn't look right but i am pretty sure they improve it anyways after all it was just a test.

I'm surprised there is ragdoll physics in here- probably what took a lot of time.

Oooooh, this would be great for a low-violence mode, then. I also agree that there should be more to the gory death animation. I think there should be violence levels you can change when making a character, like:

    No gore

    Normal gore

    Extreme gore

In terms of a censored, no gore animation it seems perfectly reasonable. Personally I quite the flash, pause and then *poof* into nothing, but I can understand why others might not appreciate the pause so much. I could be horribly mistaken but I've always personally equated a 'no gore' mode to mean kid friendly... perhaps more immediate feedback that you've killed something is a plus in this case? Like a flash of colour inversion before the beasty pops?

However if this became the de facto death animation then I would have to object. The rag doll animations add a sense of gory satisfaction... One of the things that really stood out about the Terraria combat is just how satisfying it was to kill something. A nice squelchy sound effect followed by the monster splurting into component parts. But those parts also bounced and interacted with the terrain before they faded from view, thus adding more 'weight' to what you accomplished. All three of these details combined to make it that much more enjoyable! (And this makes me sound psychotic. Happy days!)

I've noticed from several Starbound streams that while the monsters do break into components parts, they simply become part of the background and 'slide' from view. I'm not in any way looking for a Terraria clone, but in this case I do believe Terraria got the combat pretty spot on with how satisfying the after effects could be.

Let's hope it really is the no-gore animation. Combat is something I am planning on doing a lot. I saw that building is great and all, exploration is going to rock too (I mean, everything is random and so atmospheric!). So combat is my only worry right now.

i much rather prefer the gory disembodiment of random alien monsters :sparta:

Honsetly they should have 3 different death animations (the explosion, the blast apart and a simple ragdoll death) and have them randomly assigned to each creature death.

I hated the old animation where the body parts got hurled in all directions.

It looked cheap and just.... bad, like some web browser flash game animation.
It's as if they just took the loose parts meant for the animations and just made them fly in different directions.

I find the smoke ball to be much, much better.

even for a "no gore" animation death, it still is pretty dull looking and seems like an odd and unfitting death. I still think they could do better with it, and I'm assuming they well.

it only happens when you kill mobs via explosions. I think tiy made it a temporary universal so we wouldn't see the new death animation.

I dislike the "poof" because theres nothing horribly violent left to show you killed the monster.

it feels like when something dies they implode and release a nice poof of air, or at least that's how i see it.

Seeing as the streams are mostly testing I doubt this will be the default animation.

What he also has been saying repeatedly is that there will be several death animations for the different ways you can kill mobs. I don't get why people don't follow up on these things, and think that is has to be limited to one death animation. :s
