So what is everyone's favorite pet to use in Starbound and why? It can be any reason.

Mine is the large random flying creature because they can be really strong.

    Poptop!
It's a shame that it always get interrupted while singing to walk back and forth though.
I don't really use it to battle but more of a mascot for my ship.

I like Mandraflowa as pets(the giant cousins to the annoying potato bouncing things) because they can fly and deal a lot of pain. They are especially helpful on dreadwing, as long as they have a health collar.

Pteropods, Snaunts, and Snufflers are also good, as they shoot a ranged poison attack, making them helpful during exploring. Pteropods are great during the Kluex, Big Ape, Shockhopper MK1, and Ruin boss fights, and actually pretty much any boss, because they fly, keeping them safe from ground or near ground attacks, ranged so they do not fly in to accidentally get hit by attacks, and small so they can avoid any attacks that do come their way, although do to the way they fight, it's rare that a boss will actually target them, making them perfect for boss battles.

Lumoth is best for caving, (especially if you've got frackin universe installed) because it makes light. It is relatively weak when compared to other monsters, but when caving you generally don't run in to that many monsters, making the lumoth perfect.

Kluex Sentry works like the Pterepod, but with a trade-off: The Kluex Sentry has more damage and faster attack speed, but is a larger target(it also has more health), but it does fly closer to the ground. Pterepod is smaller and flies higher, and acts more like a turret because it just stays there and shoots when locked on. It will follow its target when they get too far away. This decreases the chance that it will get in the way of the enemies attacks drastically. However, Pterepods have less health and less damage. So, do you want a flying unit that's a Ceramic Cannon or a Flying Ninja?

I really like pteropods as well. They've helped me on a lot of quests. And they are kind of cute.

I've got Pinfriend although I don't use her for fighting, she just follows me along with an Oblivious collar. For fighting, however, I like to use the birds found in challenge portals; the big, purple/white ones that breathe blue fire. It's great for taking out large groups of NPC fighters, because its fire attack is very OP >:DD

Pteropods or Lilodons. Pteropods are good ranged attackers, but Lilodons are good brawlers and slightly cuter. So a pteropod will probably survive long fights, while a Lilodon can help you end short battles quicker. A Lilodon with a healing III collar seems like a good idea if you really want an adorable pet to help you take out difficult enemies.

Of course, if you want to instakill a boss, capture a robot chicken and ensure that they reach their target. 99999 base damage. Sure, they have only 2 hp, but if you stand on one side of the boss and throw the capture pod to the other side, the boss will probably fire at you, leaving it free to attack. The main issue with this strategy is the whole "bosses tend to stay above ground level" problem. So you can only really defeat the first stage of the Kluex Avatar and maybe the Shockhopper with this.

Large birds make for good general-issue fighters/exploring companions. Since they stay high above the ground, have relatively high base HP and exclusively use projectile attacks, they're not very likely to get killed by anything, especially if you equip them with a healing collar for good measure.

Adult Poptops are kind of good, but a bit situational. With almost twice the base HP of your standard monster, an enormous hibvox and a huge sweeping attack that can hit multiple targets, you can kind of just throw one down and use it as a walking shield. The best use, though, would probably be "guard dog." If you have a colony on a planet inhabited by monsters that can go through walls or where meteors frequently create breaches in your defenses, just place down a few Pet Tethers here and there and position Adult Poptops with healing collars at them. Don't even bother using them as exploring companions, though; they are ssssoooooo sssslllllooooooowwww.

While I've never tried this myself, I've heard that any kind of monsters that splits into multiple monsters on death, when equipped with a Fire Bomb Collar, can cause some major damage, since the monsters that they split into inherit the same collar as their "parent."

According to the wiki, captured splitting monsters don't split, sadly.

I think they do actually. I saw a top ten pets video and the Nutmidge (which splits into three) can still split, but I haven't tested it so I'm not sure.

I LOVE the large birds! They are randomly generated, have random projectiles, and can attack close up! I use them all the time!
As for Adult Poptops... I haven't found one yet, but I do agree that they are good!
However I mostly use Ooglers as guard dogs, because the loud growling sound alerts me to when there is an enemy. Also they are pretty strong.
I have seen a video of a person who used the firebomb collar on a Nutmidge, but I haven't tested it.

I use a Pteropod in one of my games. I think they are very cute, and good with ranged attacks as long as no one's targeting them, and they are in a spot high enough from the ground.
