Now, first thing I want to make clears is that Hyperspace is for pussies (mind my language).
I personally don't like hyperspace becuase, well, it's in everything. What I would like is as simple as the following:
Bending space-time! As explained in Sci-Fi Science by Michio Kaku, it would be an FTL drive that compresses space in front of you in stretching it behind you, thus traveling faster than light without breaking the laws of physics. I have long had this idea stuck in my head. It would also work hand in hand with Cavewulf's Time Travel idea, since then time travel would be as simple as FTL travel through the 4th dimension, so to say. In gameplay mechinics it would have a slight impact in that one might theorize that with sufficiant power, one could travel anywhere in the universe instantly (not sure if there's enough energy in the universe to do that though :p). And so, depending on your power output, you could travel faster. Or instead i guess you could make wormholes, but that might be a bit boring from a gameplay mechanics POV. So you what do you think? Wormholes, Space-Time Bending or Hyperspace?

    TheAwesomeAvian Sandwich Man

this is a good idea, but you just have a star chart and just click the star that you want to go to

Like in Spore, there could be space folding with an interstellar drive.
