The possibilites a game from the sci-fi genre opens up when it comes to methods of transportation are expansive. I think a fast-travelling system could be envisioned in many different ways and on many different scales. This could happen simply through portals, but I guess this would be kinda unoriginal, even though convenient. It would work in a way, that you had to construct 2 portals, either both on the same planet or even on different planets. You had to asign a certain code to them, that is unique to those portals and no other portal can have, if there are already 2 portals with this code. (you could use both numerics and letters) Entering one of the portals would transport you to the other one and vice versa. Everybody could enter the portal, but you could seal it with a password to protect it from unwanted access. It would need immense amounts of energy to be sustained and kept activated, so this is obviously high-end tech. Also, just for fun, entering the portal while someone else destroys the other portal it would transport you to, would result in you being send to a completely random place in the universe, eg a random planet.

This has been suggested before. And it undercuts the value of the player's ship anyway since you're asking for a way to circumvent space travel, a prominent feature of the game. Portals for traveling quickly across the same planet as a late-game feature? Sure. For traveling across multiple planets effortlessly? No thanks.
Maybe a "system portal" which lets you travel between planets in the same solar system? Imagine you have to travel with your ship everytime you want to trade some stuff with your buddy "on the planet next to you"... However, a extremely difficult to build galaxy wide portal which gives you access to a planet with also a portal of the same type would be interesting.
Or even just a portal between planets you've already set up so that way you still need your ship to discover new ones
once again i discover a great idea on the forums fast travel like through portals would save so much time and effort that could be used building or adventuring. I give you a big thumbs up and hope this gets added in some update !
