Only, unlike Farmville, Starbound will feature ACTUAL GAMEPLAY as well.
I have nothing against farming mechanics in games, but it needs to serve a purpose beyond...well, more farming.

I'm really hoping that farming will provide for an alternative way to get some materials/ingredients.
Like someone suggested on another topic, real power plants. :)

I don't mind a bit of virtual farming in sandbox games. It's quite relaxing (when it works), and more interesting than the real thing.

It'll probably be like Junk Jack. Heaps of crops, some need to grow on specific blocks and others need specific supports. Then there is an enormous list of recipes. You can combine almost anything!

Some of it is a bit over the top.

Ooh, farming! I sort of hope that all crop growing isn't just food related, but if it is, well no big deal.
Solar Sunflowers would be interesting. That way you could have a normal looking house/castle that doesn't have generators all over the place, instead, flowers everywhere.

If plants have to be cared for periodically, well, remember that Runefactory game where you could have your monsters do all the farm work for you?
Or maybe have a "gardner" npc that you drop on your homeworld that takes care of any plant needs (nearby their house) that may be implemented (disease, vermin, watering, etc), or if none are, they could just increase product yield.

So many awesome things could be done here. Overall, I like the idea of farming and survival/realistic aspects.

Yes, they are adding a lot, but it's mostly content, rather then stupid mechanics that don't do anything. Crops, don't need to be kept track of if they're like Minecrafts system, you plant them and go dick around, and they grow and you harvest the fully grown crops. It's pretty much just place and forget.
If they started adding in stuff you had to keep track of, like, well, in order to have oxygen for your ship, you have to stand by this button and press Q and E extremely fast. That has absolutely no real reason and needs to be watched ALL the time and I doubt they'll add anything that tedious into the game anyways.
So far most of the stuff I have seen, isn't going to be needless, it adds to immersion and it adds in some more stuff to do. You don't need to grow crops, since I'm sure they're mainly used for food or buffs, which you can do without unless you're using the harder survival settings. They are going for immersion, so they're adding in a lot of features that means you have more to do before you get bored. Take Terraria for example, you go, you mine, you fight mobs, you get ore. It's a rather simple process, but you can pretty much blow through the whole game to end game in maybe a day. Starbound is going to have so much more, including now, farming and cooking. It's just more stuff for you to do. It's not tedious, it's not something you HAVE to do, but it adds more to the game then the simple basic mechanics of, go mine, fight mobs, get ore.

Noooo! I was almost certain Tiy said he didn't want to introduce food-meters and required eating...
Wow, the reason I stopped playing minecraft is because hunger SUCKS.

Oh well, I'll just have to mod it out somehow.

It'll be changable for survival difficulty. It's not going to be stuck on. And it takes 2 hours or so before you have to eat, so it's not going to be tedious like Minecraft.

I wonder if it will be a similar cooking system like Don't Starve, and the cooking being similar to that where you take four/five food bits and it makes something after some time of cooking. It was rather enjoying, and it's fun to try and figure out a bunch of recipes and grow tons of things.

I'm all for the farming, I dare say it's a slight guilty pleasure on my ipad to poke at little systems similar to the Farmvilles. The hunger thing I never had an issue with in games, since after a while with 'hunger' I normally figure out a rather easy way of keeping it well fed and also having a ridiculous amount of extra. So yeey that'd be fun to make a farm to have a self suntanning city that way.

I've always wanted a game that has a real cooking experience! Depending on when you take meat or veggies off the grill they will change on their time on that grill. Simply put, meat will go from raw, to rare to cooked to done to burnt and only listening to the snaps, crackles and pops looking at the visuals to tell when it's ready. Just like real cooking!
Also, I think it would be a genius idea if there were meters for happiness and hunger that did NOTHING! The meters do nothing so you can roll player with your character or not!!
    I'm excited guys.
