i realize that the devs arent taking falling sand out
and comparing walking and jumping to this? im just saying the in a game of static blocks, just one or two blocks that fall doesnt quite make sense to me, and annoys me

Sand already does this. Imagine how sand falls in real life (imagine an hour glass), that's what sand does in this game. It's not like Terraria where it all ends up in on huge column.

Yeah its confirmed to be in the game, and yes its annoying but I like it

How else would the sand react in pixel format? Would you rather have everything stick to the background wall? At least the sand slides down as if it had some sort of flowing texture to it, rather than becoming falling rocks of death.

I think the problem is that it's ONLY sand behaving like sand, no other block is "realistic" like that, dirt doesn't really act like dirt, neither does stone or anything else. This whole thing about sand and ONLY sand being affected by gravity did start with minecraft.

I agree on that but honestly I have gotten used to that, though it would be cool if gravity was that important and buildings would need structural support.

    No it wouldn't.

That's just your opinion just as mine was so neither one of us is right or wrong, it's not like I said micro transactions are cool.

But then how could I make impossible steampunk structures?

thats exactly what annoys me about falling sand. when its the only gravity affected block, it annoys me

Using advanced space age mechanisms that manipulate gravity.

Just a thing now, I don't have any problems with it really. I don't see it being a problem. If it broke the game then I'd say get rid of it, but it doesn't. I also don't agree with the "overused" mechanic argument, simply because mechanics are always repeated in games, continuously, without end. If you don't like iteration then games probably aren't your thing.

  13. I think it's cool that falling sand in sandbox games is becoming a sort of trope.

ugh can you believe that life also copied Starbound's corn

I'm pretty sure Starbound just got corn from Simpsons anyway

Oh cool, it is a thing! Thanks for the video link. Really fascinating stuff.
It's reminding me of the old "Falling Sand" pixel physics sandbox things.

If you think THAT'S bad, you should see the gun mechanics. The game's pretty much just a carbon copy of Halo, since that was the first game to use guns, after all.

Because sand doesn't fall in real life.

Something that's worthy of note about sand vs other materials. You can dig a tunnel through most materials in real life, even dirt. Sure, it's not perfect, but it *can* hold. But sand? You cannot tunnel through sand. It's too fine.

From what I saw in the video that was posted on page 1, the only way they could make the mechanics more realistic would be what someone already suggested, requiring support for any blocks to be able to be held up. But sand would probably still not work with this, if the devs want to be as realistic as possible.

I like that it gives a little more variety to the game world.

Minecraft didn't invent falling sand. It's not like Starbound is ripping off Terraria or Minecraft, or whatever nonsense. Dry sand doesn't stick together like Dirt or hold solid like Stone. Sand as a collective is basically a liquid.
