Very much inspired by the good ol' Fadingdoors Tool mod for Garry's Mode. What are Fading-Blocks? Fading blocks, are blocks that can change between solid and ethereal form. Also kinda like the Nano-bot door in "Doom" the Movie. Which you NEED to watch if you haven't. This is a Demo-Video, to give you an idea how it works. Actual Starbound-Functions are explained longer down. How will it function? When fading blocks are "Faded", anything can move through them unhindered. This should include water. You should barely be able to see Faded blocks, as they turn into this blurry, transparent block. Fading blocks will have to be activated through wire. Not sure if they Toggle, or need constant power. -But won't that be a lot of wiring needed for all those singular blocks? Not if the blocks that touch each other connect to only need One input. -Then what if my contraption needs to have two separate fading-doors that touch each other? This is where I recommend that the Blocks can have set Fade-IDs. Though would be acceptable without. -What happens if there's a liquid inside the faded blocks that turn Solid again? Either, the water magically gets pushed out, or (the much simpler way) they simply get overwritten, just like what that happens if you place blocks in liquid. -What happens then, if a Mob or Player are in such a field? I suggest they just become stuck, or if it's just one block wide, that they get pushed away. -What if it's a falling block, like Sand or Gravel? Then I recommend that they turn into Items. Could have yet more interesting applications. -You suggested that they be able to connect to other Touching Fadedblocks, what happens if you build a super large one, that goes beyond the generated area? No clue, I'll leave the devs to figure that out. Why should it be Blocks and not just Doors? Because this will allow for people to use it for many different applications, as it could have any shape or form that the player chooses. I can see this potentially being used in liquid-contraptions, etc. Also would be useful for advanced traps. If it were just doors, then there'd be no point to it. This sounds like witchcraft to me, how will this fit the theme/lore? Nanobots, Friend. Nanobots are the solution to ALL problems. #Singularity How do I obtain such blocks? I see two possibilities; Either they're a special block-type you can craft. Or it's a tool, which would allow you to turn any kind of block into a Fading-Block, just like in Garry's Mode. Either ways will need to be balanced by the Devs. Second possibility, although way more useful, it would be rather unrealistic to have wood (etc.) that turns ethereal. Though still solvable by Nanobots as explanation. A mod containing a similar function: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/electric-home-defense.728/ Final Note: I think I may have forgotten a few details, though I believe I've been pretty Thorough. And remember to Like! ^^
*Slightly alters his voice to sound feminine* *Cough* Yees, this is exactly what we need for this game. How Fortunate for a contraption-making widow such as myself to RANDOMLY stumble across this amazing Suggestion! Bump.
I have read your reddit post of suggestions (dont have a reddit Acc. for reply ) ^^ About this one: They are already "implemented " there is a small glitch castle dungeon with a sorcerer . On the far right side is a small hidden horizontal "hidden door" . All it need is more variation and tiles. I support this.
This sounds like something that appeared in Terraria a long time ago. There were blocks that would switch between being foreground and background blocks. There were also something that appeared in Terraria very recently, the ability to use an odd tech plate to make a block be solid, and then ethereal. If this is added to the game, it would be nice. Whether it is in the same way, or a unique way, to other games, matters not to me.
I want to sound mean or anything but the blocks in the game already function like that right click to make it a background block or left click to make a solid block. not only do we have doors, but we also have buttens an things you can make at the 3d printer or wiring station, to make the doors function the way you want, we have a wiring tool as well[/quote]
Read. The. WHOLE. Thing. Thanks. Doors do not at all have the same function that I want. Blocks cannot Change on your command between being Ethereal and Solid. Background is Not Ethereal. "Why should it be Blocks and not just Doors? Because this will allow for people to use it for many different applications, as it could have any shape or form that the player chooses. Indeed, this would be ingenious! Think of it... background blocks could temporarily vanish, depleting an area of liquid, or foreground blocks could do so, providing a trap, or a variant of an entrance, that would be otherwise invisible! The possibilities are endless!
That mechanic is already used in the floran party. When you beam in, there's a switch and when you pull it the ground vanishes.
