Sounds dumb to most, I'm more than sure. But something simple like a smile can really change a character's essence. Things like: Smirk Smile Big Smile Surprised Squint Unnerved I decided to create some really quick, possibly terrible ones as examples. PS: Yes, I dream to smile >: O! Edit: Well, it seems I posted in the wrong section :<! I meant for this to go under mechanics. >.<! Edit2: actually "Other" would make more sense.
Some kind of expressions would be pretty cool in the game, and some kind of UI to change them. Maybe something like plastic surgery to change major features of the face too, if there are any.
I'd definitely love a UI or even just a chat command to change them. Having the same facial expression for the rest of the character's existence would be... discouraging
Even that Smilies Look Nice... They are something wont end well in Starbound Design. I say this because people wont notice the smilie at the current state of how much the game Zooms... I believe Emotions would be awesome like an Chat Bubble up your head, with the Smilie! Like this in Starbound Style:
You might have a point there. I'll have to check out the zoom levels, etc. Though I hate (graphical) emoticons, to be honest X D! But, I wouldn't mind if said chat emoticon was your character's face + expression : )
Graphical emotions with that bubble may work awesome if done in a "cute hay". And then the expression may be an bonus to them, but the bubble one tells everyone you Mad about something for example. (they can be activated with : ) ... : ( normal commands) Talking about this, Chat Bubbles would be soo much Immersible in the game, no idea why not! I love them *_*
To each their own ; ) It wouldn't be a forced thing (that you -have- to have an expression), but rather an extra thing. To note, though...:
Earlier just talked about emotes in speech bubbles and chat bubbles... Some time in Paint and there's my Suggestion Topic. http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/chat-bubbles-in-local-chat.16989/
May I ask why not? Btw, they could easily just make it so that you won't get to see the chatbubbles if you say so in the options menu. Grzzz vlamer12
Hotkey based facial expressions would be the bare minimum above simple smilies popping up above your head. I'm not saying they shouldn't be in the game but there should be a way to keep it set to a particular face/mood. Maybe in addition to the pose there could be a mood/personality selector for your starting expression and you can change it with something in the game?
could you make your expression affect NPCs as well like if you smile at a human they are less likely to be aggressive but with monkeys smiling is a sign that you want to fight (true story) and maybe with glitch any expression makes them more likely to attack? and who knows about avians and florans
That's because with animals like monkeys and dogs, you're technically baring your fangs, and that seems like an unnecessary amount of realism.
Excellent idea and nice sprites. However an awful lot of the smirks have the mouth so close to the eyes that its terrifying.
By doing this you make the concept of facial expressions a actual must. This makes it so that people who do not prefer expressions are forced to use them if they want to have the same advantages. Besides I think that making it influence npc's make it unncessarily complex. Grzzz vlamer12
I doubt anybody would notice the different facial expressions. In fact, because the game is really zoomed out from the character, I would doubt many would be able to tell what facial expression you are even doing. I would much rather there be a speech bubble with an emote when you type an emote into the chat, rather than having actual facial expressions.
