F.U. supplies wipe (backup question)

I accidentally clicked my character while not on internet and lost all progress. I know this is most likely my fault for not backing up the files. But when should I back up the files? (to prevent further character resets being necessary) I have made a new character and would rather not have to delete it since I spent 18 hours on the last one just to lose it to an accidental click. Is the back for all files regarding the current character or does it simply save what the character already has?
