Officially endorsed. That's cute. It's not the "haters'" jobs to deem when a thread needs to be closed. It's not their job to post in that thread saying "this is useless and needs to be closed." It's not their job to be a vigilante and reprimand people for making such threads. I'm not going to close a thread everytime someone takes it too seriously and doesn't know how to lighten up. I'm not going to close a thread just because some people get sooooooo filled with rage that they can't sleep properly knowing that such a "useless" thread still exists. We're not going to turn this forum into a totalitarian elitist cluster where only the "Best and senior" members get to determine a thread's lifespan.

The real reason this thread isn't getting hate is simple: People are learning how to lighten up. People are having fun with this thread. Even if it's a similar concept. What would you guys do if he resurrected the first "We're so excited" thread ever in existence? I'll tell you what most of the people would do.

    "Wow necro."
    "Holy necro!"
"This has got to be the biggest necro I've ever seen!"
    "Thanks for necroing this"
"Did this really need to be necroed?"

I swear, people seem to be upset that we're not "punishing" people for making these threads, especially when "the haters" get away with a slap on the wrist for what can constitute as trolling. People need to lighten up. We're not going to turn this forum into a super-restrictive place where you'll be crucified for making a (HEAVENS FORBID!) similar topic to one that already exists. The mods don't "officially endorse anything." I'm not going to treat "making a useless thread" at the same level as "trolling, personal attacks, and rude behavior." The reason this thread exists is because people will enjoy it while it's there. If the community wanted it dead so much they'd stop posting in it. And then it would die. We don't have a stickied "We are excited" thread, and there's no current plans to have one. This thread is harmless. I'm sorry if it personally offends anyone that this thread exists. I'm sorry if this thread broke into anyone's house and stole their DVDs, cut anyone in the lunch line, or scuffed anyone's shoe.

People need to lighten up. If you guys don't like it, report it and move on. I can't stress that enough. By reporting, it brings attention to the thread. But when people post negatively and with hostile intent, it brings attention to themselves. I have no reason to close this thread because it hasn't devolved into flaming and hatred like most threads do. Threads like this are actually therapeutic to communities, whether you guys believe it or not. It's nice to actually have a place where people can simply express their excitement about the game. This is what is known as a "cyclic" thread. It will be posted in until the community gets bored of it, it will die, and some time down the road, it'll be either revived, or made anew. We're not going to make a sticky of every single "Commonly" made threads. We're probably not going to make official "Are you excited" threads. We're not going to go back in history and check every single thread and merge every single similar thread together. (At least I'm not, I'll be honest about it too.) And we're not going to instantly nazi-lock every single vaguely similar thread that springs into existence.

We deal with things that become a problem, or might become a problem. Threads like this are good to have around, cause guess what? When someone makes a similar thread, we can direct them to this still relevant one. As opposed to linking them to a thread that they'll then be reprimanded for necroing? Or maybe we should just lock their thread and go "There's too many of these threads but I'm not going to link you to any of them. Stop making useless threads." It's not as easy as "merge all similar threads. Tell them not to make similar threads." That's a purist's and optimist's approach to the situation. Furthermore, me accidentally stepping off the crosswalk doesn't give people the right to hit me with their car, does it? They can make a "useless" thread (I don't like that word because nobody's thoughts and ideas are "useless" or "worthless.") but that doesn't give people the right to be rude. I will always take rudeness, trolling and insults more seriously than a "duplicate thread." Because if it's a truly a duplicate, it takes a second to merge it with another thread. If it's truly "useless" it'll take a second to delete it. But when people drag rudeness, and insults, into it, it takes up to 10 minutes to appropriately handle the situation. And it's not the ideal option. Ideally, people would report it, ignore it, and then the mods will handle it if it needs handled. If it is not handled, that's not the signal to "handle it yourself."

Vigilantes might be trying to do things "for the better good." But if they break the rules in order to do it, they're essentially being hypocritical.

That's just my take on the situation though.

On topic, I'm glad people are learning not to take things so seriously, for the most part. It's good to sit down and just talk about things you're excited for in the game. And things you're excited to see. Like me and farming.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think there are some threads which don't have any real discussion value that we could do without. But you're right, I'm not the one making that decision, you (and the other mods) are. Therefore, this will be the last post I make regarding this issue, since I've spoken my mind and don't really have anything else to add to that discussion. No hard feelings, I hope.

On the topic of this thread: I am also excited. I hope SB gets released soon - I would love to play as soon as it's available. :blank:

Why does this sound sarcastic? Also c'mon, people need to talk about AAANYTHING related to Starbound.
Even if it would be 'pointless'.

  7. Wait.... I thought Starbound was about becoming a celebrity... :(

I'm deliberately keeping my excitement for Starbound to a simmer, lest I become endlessly frustrated at the nebulous release date.
Though in the last week, for the first time in months, Starbound competition in terms of games I am watching.

Definitely agree with Xy here, the reason this thread isn't being complained about for sure isn't because people are learning to be tolerant. The reason I didn't say anything was because I was tired of saying the same old crap each time one of these shitty threads show up.

As for why this thread is shitty, it's not because it's a thread that keeps being reposted, it's because it offers absolutely nothing in terms of discussion; the first 'I'm excited' thread is just as worthless as the latest one. Someone in another thread mentioned these threads would work better as a status update and that's exactly what it feels like. These threads annoy people because they spam up the front page and push worthwhile threads back. Sure it's the mods decision what to lock in the end, but it'd be a pretty crap system if they didn't listen to the community; If a thread pisses people off it might as well be deleted.

In my opinion the 'hating' (If you can even call it that, most people just joke about it) is good as well, it teaches the OP not to make a thread for every dull thought somewhat related to starbound that drifts through his head.

Eh, nah. Looks to me like there has been plenty of discussion arising from it so far. Almost seems like people have been having a little fun. To me, that seems like a positive thing.

I might also submit that you're throwing out some eggshells for the OP and others to walk on. Wouldn't imagine this is ever a nice thing to do. And one might suggest that the mods are forcing the "haters" to walk on eggshells and forbidding them from speaking their mind as well, but frankly enough, if one thinks having a responsibility to be respectful and tolerant to others equates to "walking on eggshells," one is more than likely a jerk.

On topic, I have to agree; I don't think I've ever had this degree of anticipation for a game since Castlevania 64. (Which, as far as I'm concerned, was a blast.)

The fun that people are having is off-topic rambling, it's the only thing they really can do in a thread without a topic.

And you really like your eggshells, but I'm not entirely sure what you were trying to say with them. I probably could be a bit more tolerant about these things but I don't feel the need to be, since this is the internet and nobody's going to take what anyone says very seriously anyway.

I sense an assumption that off-topic rambling is an objectively bad thing? It isn't.

In any case, apologies for the confusion. I only meant to say that one should not feel like treating other with respect is an inconvenience, as it's essentially just basic courtesy.

As far as being intolerant, my good sir, that is entirely your prerogative. But I might submit that there are people who will take any criticism or negativity seriously, and while most would probably say "it's their responsibility to take it well," I would instead suggest that it's actually everyone's responsibility to not be a jerk in the first place. Again - my two cents only.

Jokes are fine. But when I get reports, and PMs, of an incident where someone feels legitimately offended, I'm no longer allowed to view it as "just a joke." People can remind OP not to make threads like this, it's fine. But if they can't do it without being rude, I suggest they not do it at all. In fact, I've never really punished anyone for "joking" or "hating" on it. I simply punish the people who are overly aggressive. (And it's not even really punishing. Most of the time it's simply a reminder in the form of a PM not to be rude.) Constructive criticism and what not, is the key. We've been lenient on people who make these threads, and we've been more than lenient on people who bash them too.

What's okay to do: "Yeah, I'm excited too, especially about the randomly generated weapons, but next time you might want to make it a status message so other people don't get upset." ----Friendly, on topic (Yes, there is a topic. "Useless" and "No discussion value" is subjective most of the time.)

What is unacceptable and will be moderated/punished: "Oh my god, another one of these threads. I wish people wouldn't be so stupid and could learn to contribute instead of cluttering up the forums with this shit." ----Contributes less than the "Useless" thread itself, and is intentionally harmful.

Both of the above remind the OP about "good posting etiquette." One is very rude and brash, and could potentially scare off new people. (Not something I like. At all.) The other is constructive criticism. I'm simply asking people to think before they speak, and not be rude. That being said, what we're doing right now is quite off topic, and I don't want to bog this thread down any further. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss it further, and my rationality on the situation.

On Topic again: I'm most excited because I know we'll have dedicated modders who will add all kinds of nutsy-cuckoo stuff to play with. Like guns that fire guns. Or a Slenderman mod. I'd love it.
