Evidence of Mole People.

I was playing the Starbound Beta with some friends. I was mainly mining with my friend Caffeine (Who is Ivy Cenia in the screencaps.) We were mining for a while, searching for gold ore because we needed an upgrade from our boring old silver tools. Along the way, we discovered something strange. Note, the only things we changed while walking were torches, platform things, and ofcourse we dug. Everything else was discovered how it is shown.

We found what appeared to be a small village! There was a wooden floor, both blue and normal. Barrels and scafoldings were found. But that wasn't all. Not by a long shot.



Further exploration towards the right we discovered what looked like the background stalls for shops. It was a very neat site! We suspected it was just a cool little glitch.

After walking more towards the right, I discovered what looked like water. Also I found some lanterns! They were there, so we concluded that it was just a village gone wrong. Though how could I know if it really was water? Well simple...


I gave it the old swim test. Glitched Water? Confirmed. I bet the Hylotl were up to this.


I expected this place to be very small. So here is some scenery that I found while exploring. The next couple of screen shots are just more of this single SECTION (forshadowing~?) of this grand place.




This is what I found when I reached the end. Very suspicious. What were those signs signaling me to?

I expected my journey to be done and finished. I didn't take anything, but I didn't know if Ivy had. But then Ivy told me she had found something! I followed her waypoint, and fell down a hole to find...

I decided to let Ivy know that I wanted to screencap this. I politely asked her to not pillage anything, because this was an important find! Apparently there was a second "platform" so we ran along it.

After some running in the right direction (See what I did there?) I found a way, along with Ivy. We noticed some lanterns on the other side of the dirt, so we decided to dig in that direction. Maybe it just cut there.

The little hole we dug eventually lead us to a third platform. A little monster we saw down there ran away, apparently he didn't feel like having his picture taken! Joke's on him though, we got his tail.

I ran to the right, eager to explore while Ivy complained about how much gold was not there. Though a big discovery occurred when I found a carrot! A carrot, growing underground? Maybe there was a colony down here or something.. At least the little white monster decided to come back to have his picture taken!

I continued walking, because who knows what else could possibly be up ahead? Apparently nothing. A whole lot of nothing that looked dangerous to walk into. I told caffeine to watch her step, didn't want her to get hurt!

I eventually made it to the bottom of the chasm. It was starting to look like a normal cave. I decided to examine the strange background wall. I was unimpressed. Though still, I continued...

We eventually found another platform! The count is at four. When I arrived, Caffeine (Ivy) told me that she had found beds! Beds? Beds underground? Obviously mole people. I kept forgetting to save screenshots with the snipping tool which was a pain. But I got it down eventually.

This was the bed I found. Was someone living here? It was at this time that we noticed that one of our friends left the server.

Down below was yet another haypile bed. And a lantern too which must have been a night light. I saw the wall had been cut out on the other side so I continued down to find...

Yet another platform! And this guy looked very suspicious. He was obviously the one responsible for all of this!

There was yet another platform, and I walked to the left this time. I decided to tease Caffeine.

Hey Chucklefish, are you guys planning something? Are you CONFIRMING MOLE PEOPLE?!

This places is directly to the left of the picture I posted 2 pictures ago, the one with the stairs leading downwards. I assumed that was it. There was nothing left to explore. But then Ivy told me she had found something to the right. I did find some monsters though. Maybe they killed the mole population?

She had found lanterns! And I found a octopus/platypus hybrid. I named it, the tentaclepuss. Though maybe he was trying to give me a warning? I continued to the right. That is where things got really creepy.

Was this some ancient temple?! Suddenly things looked like an ancient tomb. We were creeped the heck out. I began to wonder if this was supposed to be that one ancient city that was built on top of a destroyed city, which was built upon a destroyed city, and- you get it. I forgot the name, I didn't pay attention too much in history class. Still though, we were glad we didn't quit right then and there. What we saw next surprised us..

What the heck!? I was talking about wanting this world save to investigate later. But instead we found this. An idol? Were these the mole people? No. They must have been FROG MOLEMEN. (Dibs on the race suggestion.)

We went past this idol. And we found this guy. Was he the mastermind behind all of this?! Also he looks _VERY_ familiar...

I knew I saw this guy somewhere.

He did not speak, like the other merchants did. But he did have stuff to sell. I decided I would screencap his inventory before buying something. I didn't want to offend him because let's face it, I don't talk to many Hylotl. This was my only chance to talk to something somewhat aquatic.
This is when I realized he was in a development update. (Linked a little earlier!) I freaked out about it so much.

Before leaving I decided that it would be best to just buy some bombs and a couple golden pickaxes. We said good bye to the creepy dude, but then we saw a waterfall thing? Was this a sign that there was more? I had Ivy to use her Floran digging powers to break the rock! It took her quite a long time!

I went afk to get a slice of pizza, making others do back breaking work is a hard job you know. When I came back, I followed her waypoint marker. I wasn't the smartest person so I accidentally flooded the next platform we found. I did my best to cover it up before it filled any more, but it was too late. Ivy came to investigate why it suddenly started raining underground. I told her the truth, but she was okay with it.

Here we found yet another statue. Veeery creepy.

At this point, every time we went to the left or right we found another platform to drop down onto. I stopped screencapping the majority of the place, only took pictures of more important looking things. We found another statue, and I tried to get Ivy to come look at it!

Yup. Definitely Frog Mole men. He sold the exact same stuff too as the previous frog person. I was getting creeped out. (I still have dibs on the character race idea)

I decided to dig down, and found another platform. Though this one appeared to be the absolute last one. I went down below to see if any others existed, but there were none. I decided to end it on a poetic note...


... Sort of. On our way back up we found another frog man on a platform we didn't find before. He was creepy. We tried to see if he reacted to gravity. But he was no mere mortal. He simply stayed floating. So we did what we did to countless hostile mobs. We shot at him...

Which did not kill him. So I did the next best thing, I examined him to see what he did. Apparently he is a crafting bench. Now for sure we were done.

Nope! Just kidding. I threw some bombs at him to see if he died. Being impervious to mere mortal weapons he didn't even flinch. Or move. The not moving was creepy.

He knew something. I know he was behind all of this. I shouted to the heavens what this Forg could possibly know. Sadly, there was no answer.. That was the last thing we found before we left.


Conclusion:

So essentially we found what we believed at first to just be a normal glitch, but we now suspect this was stored somewhere in Starbound's code as a plan, and not just a glitch. I am hoping to see underground frog men that live in a city. Even if this was just a pure glitch, I wouldn't mind the Devs seeing this and actually implimenting this into the game, albeit in a much more cleaner way.

Did we stumble upon something the Devs were not finished with? Probably.

It felt like it went more and more off the rails the further I read, but I enjoyed it nonetheless

 

I already found it creepy at the wooden part. Creepiness levels rose when we got to the stone part! Especially the purplish broken background helped alot. Was a fun expedition though and I'd love to hear the story behind it!

 

Good post! I like the story a lot and lots of stuff could happen with this One thing to add, you missed blocking out on of your friends steam ID's in the picture where you showcase the merchant menu, you may wanna block that out for their sake

Man, i found the exact same statue, but i guess i didn't explore enough and never got to the frog merchant T.T Now I'm light years away from that planet with no luck in finding another statue!

 

These kind of spawns underground are the reason I enjoy playing and look forward to more content updates. The idea of just digging away for a resource for a while, then coming across ruins and exploring them always entertains me.. Half of the time you just forget the reason you came down there in the first place because you get so lost in adventure. ^^

 

Fascinating. Although mercilessly killing Frogmolemen just because they defy gravity would be... illogical.

 

This was a wonderful post. This is what this game is about. Sharing your wonderful stories of adventure from unknown plants around the universe. I hope this becomes a bigger thing as the game gets more stable. Bravo!

Great post. Some spoilers would not hurt, though.

 

This is nowhere near as creepy as the underground doll house biome.

And that is nowhere near as horrifying as the underground flesh biome.

But this is nice. Conspiracies FTW.

 

Sort of! I found this place early on when I made this post, so my gear wasn't the best at the time. Essentially, my character is a humanized version of one of my oc ponies.
