You would think that if they aren't on track for a Full Release in 2013 that they would want to update the wording on everything listed in this thread about "Starbound will be out 2013!" now so that it's less of a last minute 'oops'

It's a tough call I guess, if they still think there's a chance at a 2013 full release, they have to go forward with that goal in mind. Changing the messaging now would scare some people off, and then if they ended up meeting the deadline anyway those lost fans would be for nothing.

I'd imagine the beta period for any sandbox game must be pretty substantial, because the potential for bugs is much greater than in that of a story-driven straight-forward game. Even if the demo came out tomorrow, would 4 months be a long enough beta to release the full game at the very very end of 2013?

Well those photos of the dev team definitely made it worse. A bunch of older male nerdy developers (no offense against anyone at chucklefish, nerd is 'cool' now) with one cute redhead placed delicately in the middle. If they had taken a picture with Molly next to some sports illustrated swimsuit models, there might be fewer creepy comments right now. (nothing against molly, she's adorable)

I'm going to kinda be mean to this post for a second or two then suggest a better set of arguments. I'll try to explain why.

This isn't a justification or a good reason.

This is a fair point. But I think the argument we're giving is that you shouldn't make promises you can't keep.

Most companies feel bad about it, if only because they lose revenue over it, and a lot of the people who work for companies do so because they may actually like making games.

The FAQ very clearly says it's coming out.

    Then don't.. promise a date.

... Yeah, Edge of Space actually released early because they SAID they would. Also people playing are also beta-testing.

They do not have a large team. 11 to 14 people is not large.

There's a word for this: we call it unpayed labor.

That in no way relates to feature creep. It's still feature creep whether they were paid or not. (Although Namiwakiru makes very good points about why this isn't bad.)

Now, an argument you could have made (and probably should have been):

The features added on Sundays are ways for the staff to take a recharge and add a feature they're really excited about to the game. This keeps their passion and excitement up and prevents them from being blocked by a feature or stubborn code block*

    *This can kill projects!

Yeah, I know. If I were more eloquent I could have made my point without 'insulting' anyone. I'm very much a nerd and have that look too, so I'm not making my point from some feeling of superiority. Put Molly next to me in a picture and it'll have the same effect! :p

EDIT: From a female perspective, doesn't every girl want a friend who's less attractive than she is, so in public she looks better? TV has taught me that that is the case :p

1.75 million dollars split between a maximum of 14 people is $125,000 for each of them so far.

If we say the preorder phase begun a year ago (I'm going to assume it didn't, but be generous), they've still made themselves a middle class lifestyle for two years.

Of course, the income tax will be higher, but it's still enough to live on comfortably while they do dev things.

If they're actually quick enough not to release after 2014, all development done up to beta is going to be very comfortably paid.

They're not working for free. If they do "fun coding" in the weekends, it's still working to further their career.

While true, it is furthering their career, they werent each given their 125,000$ right off the bat. They are on sallaries with that money in the pool for the fund of chucklefishes project. They are still working in their spare time on the game. Whether or not you want to agree, its equivelent to you going to work on your only day off, to do more work. Whether or not it helps the game and in proxy themselves via career is moot. They are doing these "feature creeps" on their spare time. Not the time they are sallaried to do. Could they spend that time to do other things? Yes. But its THEIR time, not Chucklefish's, so they arent slowing down production by doing their own thing. Do you go to work on your days off? Even if it furthers your career? Every Week? Even if you do, you aren't required to, and neither are they. They have the right to spend their spare time how they please, and if it happens to make the game better in the process, you should applaud it, not criticize it. Cut them a little slack on their mini projects. They are all working hard nonstop to make the game the best it can.

Oh, I like the mini projects. I just don't like the idea that the only reason someone would code in their free time is out of the kindness of their hearts towards whatever they're coding.

((Also, don't they take the whole weekend to do the weekend projects? They have 3 days off.))

I wouldnt know, frankly. But the point still stands. It is THEIR time, not yours, not chucklefish's, THEIRS. They can spend the time how they freaking please. Yes it isn't just out of the kindness of their hearts, obviously they enjoy it otherwise they wouldnt do it. But it still is beneficial to us, them doing this out of their time. But you act as if they should be working on the main part of the game instead. You have no right at all to demand that, nor to criticize it. I just don't like the idea of you guys criticizing them, when they work hard on it and want a little time to relax and do something fun on their own time.

Personally, I thought this thread's topic was "Hey, I'd like some confirmation on what years they were gonna do a beta and full release in, because I was confuse."

But yeah, if it's about how we're so entitled for criticizing their something, power to you, man. Keep talking.

lol, yes, this thread has gotten a little off track. It started out with that, then it devolved into people attacking him for asking, then people attacking chucklefish, to me attacking the people who attacked chucklefish. I say we just let this thread die now.

"No one actually cares if it is feature complete or playable or anything, except for you Chucklefish. Releasing an unplayable mess unto the masses would probably hurt nothing at this point. I mean hell, Minecraft is still an unplayable mess and just look at how successful that is. Also quoting random crap out of context is more self depriciating than it is complimentary, nor at all some form of argument, which I guess is what you're trying to do. You are arguing up there, right? I can't really tell. It seems more like throwing words at eachother senselessly." - Gaikang

But that's not true, if you visit the FAQ in the starbound page:

That is speaking about the official release, not the beta, so the beta should be out before. By the way, the concept of soon in chuckelfish seems to differ with mine.

my Rage at notch for a abandoning minecraft is unending there are still bugs in the game from alpha. it looks like chucklefish want to release a perfect game but there is no perfect game.

sorry for starting that. it was late i had a long day and yet a again there it was a request to hide the debate. i would love to try to debate the pros and cons of early access to game, despite my dyslexia. hell i have sume good arguments why there not raleasing the bate now but i am not here to defend chucklefish.

Dude you just don't get it. It's not just the weekend. Bart's music--that he started on the weekend--became a feature because it was awesome. They spent actual dev time implementing this after he spent his own time working on it.

Now I'm not saying this is a bad thing in any way, but you just don't seem to understand the simple facts that have been presented to us.
