I see many people who are saying that the beta of the game is expected this year, as suggesting that the full game will not be before 2014, as I know the developers promised to deliver the game completely this year, or am I wrong?

I hope my question does not hurt anyone susceptibility, now that the forum has become less tolerant than ever.

    Thanks for your attention

Hey! Let's put up FAQ with common questions that are often asked on forum so ppl wont create useless topics.

Before it gets locked, I'd like to say the devs, already having a hard time estimating the duration to finish certain projects, probably don't even have a good timeframe of how long they'll end up being in beta, but they said the beta will be feature complete so theoretically once the beta is out they can rush the full release to whenever they want. Also, my speculation is that once the beta is out people will stop caring about the "official release date".

Entries have begun bitter... I do not see why they have to lock the topic, isn´t a question about the beta, is about full game, I do it with decency and not wanting to build a war

I think they fully intended to release the full game in 2013, but are now realizing it is taking longer than expected and they are unsure if full release will be ready this year. I still have hope, but I wont be heart broken if its not. I'm sure they will make good on the beta this year, which will satisfy most people.

No, they probably intended for the full release of Starbound to be ready and released before 2013 ends. But at this point I don't think the full version of the game will make it for a release in 2013.

Let me just quote Tiy's post, hope that's okay for you Tiy:

So basically the only thing that is promised for 2013 is the beta version of the game. But from my own opinion, I don't think the full version will be able to make it for 2013, the beta will though in my opinion, it's not that far off. :)

Full release date after the beta will probably depend somewhat on how badly we break the game when they let us play.. Cause I'm sure somewhere there will be some issues that will take time to resolve.. always are.

What they did or didn't promise isn't so black and white. There are many forms of proof, several in the OP, that clearly show Chucklefish drawing a line in the sand and saying 2013 is it for an official release; however, as we all know... even the best of plans can be disrupted and now that line in the sand has transitioned to more of a beta release for 2013.

I knew when i49 was announced that a beta before-hand was impossible, but I still have hopes for a full release... we just have to wait and see. Honestly, everyone complaining about missed release dates will most likely disappear once Chucklefish gets the beta out... provided its in 2013. ;)

Regardless... I think the devs are doing a great job.

I say nope, feature creep is setting in and they're getting off track, there's still far too much to do/start/finish in the core game that we won't see anything passable for months.

What feature creep? I keep hearing people say this, but I still haven't seen any evidence. Tiy has already said that they have a set list of features that they want to implement for the game to be ready for Beta/release, and the only unplanned features are their small weekend projects.

We don't have the list, nor do we know every feature that's been implemented. So how do people keep claiming to know feature creep is setting in?

I don't see why people are so hostile to the question. It is a valid question that i'm sure all of you want to know, even if you dont want to ask. He isnt asking "releasedate when" he is just wanting an approximate estimation of the general year its going to be released. Thats it. I don't think thats an unreasonable request, but again, its up to the devs to decide to answer or not. We arent entitled to the answer, but thats why he was ASKING. (personally, I dont think it will be full release this year. But from what we have seen, I think the beta will be more polished and have more content then terraria, so people will hardly notice its a beta xcept for the bugs.)

And as to feature creep, that may seem to be the case if you take into account the mini-projects they do on sundays. But those are things they do on their TIME OFF, not during production time for the game. feature creep is not slowing down release. This is just the devs being the awesome people they are, and even working on their time off to make things better.

Thats part of the problem, as is the lack of clarity in Chucklefishs designs style. Let me break it down. Most people expect this to go on a line.. or from bottom to top. The important things first.. with small finishing touches last.

Chucklefish works in more of a sort of.. you work on X.. Ill handle Y.. okay someone got Z? Fashion. The updates paint a very confusing picture of whats actually necessary and what isn't. Its why so many are beginning to feel there is feature creep going on. Because we see a very jumbled way of completion rather then a structured ordered means, its leaving a good deal of people wondering if they aren't continuing to add things beyond their original scope while pushing the dates further back.

Its part of why those 16 questions are important to. There is confusion and a lack of clarity clouding a lot of this. They don't have to answer.. but I think it would really help clear up a lot of confusion about things like this.

Well we've got like what four months left of the year? I don't think we'll see a full release within that time frame. It's possible sure, but the devs seem really focused on making sure the game is well polished so I don't see it happening.

The estimated release date of Starbound has been pushed several times, a while after it became year 2013- Tiy decided that it's better to have a more open developing field and decided on a 2013 estimate. The reason he chose this is pretty clear, it's really hard to hit a estimate for a game like Starbound when the development is not so straight forward as it would seem when planned ahead of time. There are many flaws that can happen mostly while programming which would delay the task at hand, and this is very hard to foresee when it happens, etc.

So basically I agree with you, except for the proof part, they have never promised a full release of Starbound before 2013 ends. That is pretty black and white to me. The only thing promised so far is a beta release before 2013 ends, and I believe the beta release is not so far away. I think the beta release date will be announced sometime in September, I just see that as a valid time frame for a beta release announcement. That could mean that the beta would be released either in September or October, but that's just speculative at this point, I don't have enough knowledge about their progress to make a better guesstimate.

I agree that when the beta is released there won't be many questions about a release date for the full release. It just makes sense that instead of wondering so much about the full release, they would rather look forwards to beta updates, etc.

I agree that the devs are doing a great job, it's really coming together nicely. I can't wait for the beta to be ready, it will be awesome.

Thank you for contributing to the thread, you are very insightful.

I disagree. It's hard to have trust in the developers when they're coding in things like bosses when core gameplay mechanics such as temperature are not working perfectly, and bugs like teleporting the player into a cold lake that ends with permadeath as we saw with Legris' demonstration.

2013 probably isn't happening, I read somewhere that at i49 the developers said that the beta is coming out this year, with a full release to come when its ready. Funnily enough no longer using such confident language as seen in "Starbound is coming out in 2013, no matter what." or "...rest assured we will release in 2013..."
