I started playing Starbound today for the first time, and quickly got a mission to the Erchius Mining Facility. In order to continue game progression I needed to defeat the Erchius Horror. The boss is a tough boss. Tough fight. That's fine. I like a tough fight.

What I don't like is being forced to repeat the ENTIRE DUNGEON before I can challenge the boss. Each time I die, I respawn in my ship and am forced to redeploy the mission, kill every moontant, and open every door in the facility AGAIN, after already having done so multiple times. Multiple runs later, I've had enough. Until this is fixed I won't be playing the game. Why would you force your players to go through an entire dungeon just because they die to the boss? Don't you think dying to the first boss is something MOST PEOPLE do when they first start playing a game?

Strange. I died a few times as well but the mobs I killed did not respawn...I would just to run all the way back to the boss.

From what I remember from a blog about an update awhile ago, there's supposed to be a 10 minute memory for the instance levels from the time they're left. If you return before the memory expires, then you return to the same instance you died in. If you wait awhile then try again, then the old instance is forgotten and you get a fresh, new one.

I'm sorry to hear this - I have never had this issue. If memory serves the dungeon is not supposed to reset like this, you have to go back to the ship computer and actively pick the option to REPEAT the mission, and that only becomes and option when you defeat the mission once. Or it's supposed to. You may have run into a bug or some other weird glitch, because this is not supposed to be how it works.

If your mission is respawning each time, you are likely playing with an older version of the game. They have been changed to not respawn for 10 minutes of inactivity.

What is the reasoning behind this awful game mechanic? Why would my progress not simply save? I'm playing a single player campaign of starbound.

use a broad sword to deflect the bosses lazers. it has a really fast recharge for a 1 second deflect and infinite use. perfect for saving you from the lazers as they pass by. your welcome. :viking:

There is also a shortcut which makes walking back a bit easier.

    *SPOILER MAYBE*
In the beginning you have to walk through a ventilation shaft to get to a switch that opens up a hatch in the floor. Get through that hatch, go down and go left. It's a dead end but you see a tiny diagonal passage.
If you duck and move to the left you can slowly crawl your way through it, just keep pressing left while duck.. Having the Energy Dash tech makes it way faster!

On my most recent playthrough, I noticed an old school style "safe spot" on each side (left and right) of the boss, maybe I'm trippin, but it seemed legit - worth a try at least. It was the middle platform, all the way against the wall. It seemed the lasers stopped and changed directions before they could actually reach me. That and don't forget to block and spam bandages if you get hit! It's totally worth it if you win, because you will be able to check out new systems and different planet types!

Yo, thanks for the tips but I don't care about the boss fight. I know that I can defeat the boss with enough time/practice and I'm not worried about that. I'm annoyed that I have to seemingly re-beat the level and grind through moontants each time I want to try. It's stupid, it's boring, and it goes against every 'gaming should be fun' principle I know and annoys me on a moral and philosophical level.

Anyway I ran a game update so hopefully that helps. I don't like the 10 minute instance memory either (same reason, dungeon content should SAVE not reset) but it's better than nothing.

  11. Good news for you, this is no longer the expected behavior of missions. Just make sure when you die you go back to the mission quickly. There is a death grace period in which the mission remains active and in it's current state.

What bothers me is, they fixed this problem ages ago, and you're just now finding it to be an issue? This begs the question, how and why is your installation so out of date...

The 10 minute thing worked, I beat the boss on my second run through the "empty" facility. Anyway, I don't agree with the 10 minute instance reset timer, as I already stated, so I'm not exactly endorsing the method as a bastion of good game design, but it's better than before.

I don't understand why you have to start at the very beginning of the map either? Why not just respawn right at that bunk? Whatever, I'll put it behind me.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

Because you can run the dungeon as many times as you want, or with your friends?
You can re-enter and clear as much as it amuses you to do so - rather than just clear it out once and be done with it forever.

If it is any consolation, I think I remember them mentioning that they were working on a way to warp back to the boss fights for situations like this. It may have been during one of the recent streams where they were showing off the colony stuff. Maybe some one here can give proper citations or a link or something, but I am almost positive they have plans for this and are already on it. It's a looooooong beta, but they're doing so much stuff right that I just give the devs the benefit of the doubt.
