Race Equines maybe?

Excuse me, what? You completely spun what I said into something about Ponies and how somehow you're miraculously anti-pony despite your avatar. I didn't exclude you from the group of things I hate. The whole point is I'll use it if it's more like a race of Castlevania bad guys.

 

But you can already be an equine in the game, go find yourself a horsehead mask and be done with it!

But all sillyness aside, I think this is a really bad idea for many reasons , most of which have been said, but I will reiterate for emphasis WITHOUT GETTING INTO THE CLOAK AND DAGGER NONSENSE OF CRITICIZING ONE ANOTHER'S WORDING/PREFERENCES OF GAMEPLAY AND MAKING A STRAWMAN OF EVERYONE'S ARGUEMENT.

1.Equines... quadrupeds in general are more than likely not going to make it as playable races due to coding issues and all the additional work in the graphics department in order to factor in all tiers of armor and weapons, as well as cosmetic appearences.

2. How would one even BEGIN to hold such objects like a sword or gun!? If I am correct in assuming these are not upright beings lacking in any sort if flexible or opposable digits, it would be impossible for them to grasp any object without perhaps using their mouths ( which would make the two-handed option useless, as well as making them hilariously poor in combat. Not to mention the embarassment of trying to speak to an NPC while holding an item.) And if you have a way of circumventing said pitfalls like giving them tentacle add-ons or a robot backpack arm, that factors back into the graphical limitation area. You could say they have some form of psychic mind-manipulation, but then what use would a matter manipator be to them? (And don't you dare say magic is a thing for them, every person present would instantly discount this thread as being a troll suggestion.)

3. There has yet to be any mention of alternate dimensions within starbound aside from the afterlife (which isn't really a dimension at all, much less one that has any significance outside of simple lore.) So how would you begin to explain the importance of said dimension? The other races already exist within the starbound universe, so why would you need to create a new one? Quadruped fauna already exist naturally, justt group the equines in with the rest instead of creating a mess of quantum physics.

Now as a playable race, you're going to have a harder sell. How would a race with no arms and hooves manipulate objects in any meaningful fashion or develop advanced technology? Or more pressingly, how would you try sell the concept without it looking like a very obvious attempt to shoehorn in a race for the bronies? While personally not a fan of the idea, I've come to respect the value of fandoms for selling games; many a title out there has achieved greater success simply because they threw a bone to the niche groups like the furries or vampire fans. (Star Trek online for example saw a huge surge in player base once they added Caitians, so much so they had to shoe horn in a "bad guy caitian" faction that had no lore backing just so people on the klingon side could play a 'furry' style race)

Tossing a bone to the bronies is an intriguing suggestion if nothing else. However the game IS extremely modifiable - i predict they'll add this themselves pretty quickly

 

Like,whatever.What about you toss a bone to the ones that DON'T want talking girl poneys from a very specific and copyrighted girl show?This is STARBOUND.Not My Little Pony,or Star Trek,or Twilight.I don't know what the devs have in mind,but I haven't paid for a game based on a girl show that I never wanted to watch.Instead of watching yourself and only think about what YOU want to have,think about what SHOULD be.The world certainly does not revolves around a fandom,no matter if it's the Trekkies,the Bronies,the Furries,the Ewoks or even the Queen of England.This,here,revolves around Starbound,and if you guys start turning it into whatever fandom's bastion,then there is no point to keep calling it Starbound the space sandbox,it'll just be some derivated product from whatever show and will never stand out at itself,like if it had its own personality,and basically its own fandom.

We are talking about CORE features here.The things that SHAPE this game and will make it different or not from the others.The things that will tell me if it's worth its price or if it's junk.This kind of conversation should not even be imaginated at this point of the creation process.

 

Psst. I know of at least two players who were sold on starbound over terreria, because this game has furries. Like it or not, there is already aspects of this game that unintentionally or otherwise, appeal directly to a specific fandoms. And there are others, the pokemon style capture balls and mob design...

But yes, I agree with you, Starbound needs to be original on it's own merits which is why I say at the beginning of my post: "Or more pressingly, how would you try sell the concept without it looking like a very obvious attempt to shoehorn in a race for the bronies" a question addressed to the OP - because I don't think you're going to be able to sell a quadrupedal anthropomorphic horse race without it being completely obvious what it is a derivative of, hence it's not a good idea. Doesn't mean i have to be disrespectful though or disregard the idea out of hand

And they did it because it has birds walking on two legs.So I'll take it for granted that they'll never buy any kind of game unless it permits their fantasies about humanoïd animals?So I'm pretty sure they never tried Portal,TF2,Civilization,Deus Ex,Zelda,etc?Well then maybe they don't really care at all about video games,and they don't want to;there is a proverb in my country that somehow says "the one who tries too hard to please to everyone will end up not pleasing anyone".

We all have our trips.Our fandoms.I have mines as well.But it's me,that has them.They don't rule me or my life and they don't cloak my vision.I know that there are more people that will not share them than there are people that will.I accept that as a fact and act in consequence.I'm not going to ask the devs to implement my own personal fantasy as a core idea of their game.If the game does not sell enough to these people then it's not because it has no horses or whatever.It's probably because it's not good enough,and instead of trying to push every personal,irrelevant fandoms in it,we could try to implement good features and improve the gameplay;and then you'll see that it'll sell.People who won't buy it because it doesn't has two-legged animals won't know what they miss then.And even,if they really wanted it so badly,they can make their own mod.Like everyone's mom says,"it's best made by oneself".

BTW, a MLP race mod will be available eventually. I'm sure Bronies are already working on it and if they haven't, they will soon. There's a pony mod for damn near everything.

As a feature on the final product, this would make no sense. It'd be clear biased fanservice and would only damage the integrity of the Starbound universe and lore. Not everyone wants this, and not everyone who doesn't like it is going to be an ass about it like a lot I've seen. Just enjoy the mod.

I am not a brony nor will I ever be but it doesn't mean you can insult a bunch of people for wanting a horse race,mind you, not a pony race. What gives you the right to say no it's not an 'okay' idea? Starbound is in no way trying to please every one.

Question: Why must bronies force their fandom into every single facet of video game communities and alternate popculture as if it's the only thing that defines then and makes them special? What kind of insane community must force that a cartoon horse is the only thing that makes up the very fiber of their communal face?

We don't need this. Enjoy enough that a mod has been composed based on the franchise.

This game is full of memes and references that date it as is, this game's appeal will be rendered irrelevant within a decade's time. People hardly use the "all your base" meme as is. How long are stale cultural relevance going to last in this one? It's kinda damn disappointing.

 

Are you implying new ones can't be added as time goes on? Strange thing to call disappointing or worry about meme relevance in a game that just adds them in for flavor.

As for your first question, I am not sure what you mean. The fandom doesn't "force" itself into anything that other fandoms would and could if they were as able to as the mlp fandom. Wanting mlp mods in a game isn't about having to have them since it's what makes bronies special. It's that a large number of them find everything better with colorful ponies. It's really that simple.

You want Horses/Ponies in the game you need to actually get a Race for it like Jonesy said. You're going to face some outspoken opposition and some outspoken support, part of the problem with this sort of thing, but if you put enough in and make it good enough, you might pull it off. Just keep that in mind. Otherwise the closest you're getting to a Horse Race is an Apex with the Horse Mask on

 

I love this because there are 2 mods for it and they also happen to be among the top mods, along with a furry race
(All 3 have managed to hold a spot on the front page of most downloaded AND top rated )

 

The less time the devs dedicate to more cutesy/furry nonsense in the game the better. Avians and "cuddly hackkissers" are bad enough. I emphatically vote "no."
