Seems a bit far-fetched, but maybe for particular objects you need to generate energy, which could be collected via a number of ways, like fossil fuels, and when you become advanced enough you could do renewable energies and space based energies (solar wind, solar, plasma?) I'm guessing I might be in the wrong category. Never mind.

I think most people have been operating under that assumption concerning, say, turrets. That said, I'd like a way to beam power down from a space station/satellite, so you can use more dangerous energy sources without completely slagging the planet if things go pear-shaped.
I wasn't quite sure if others already thought of it. Also, there is actually something called Space Based Solar Power, its quite interesting. Thanks for the comment though.
