OR OR RATHER, WE COULD ABOUT 20 STORIES THAT ARE UNRELATED TO EACH OTHER IN ANY WAY! And More And More Are Added, And Modded, And ETC. It Would Remove The Game Having A Story That When Over Makes The Game Shitty.

For me, the endgame is actually story related, as if it would be in a non-sandbox single player game. I want to learn about the events that lead to the beginning of the story of my character - the cause, the responsible party if any is present, maybe a way to salvage and restore a bit of what's left of my world and give rise to some community that could live happily and flourish. Maybe to have a revenge on whoever's responsible or defeat them for the sake of knowing that no disaster that has befallen my planet will happen elsewhere. At the very least, to carve my own place in the world where I can live sure that it will be a peaceful life.

That being said, I have to stress that being able to further such story at my own pace is very important as would be ability to ignore it altogether, if all I want is just to explore the universe, shoot stuff and build megastructures - that should be a valid choice as well. But I think that having a choice of some sort of story and a way to find closure to many plot strings would be nice. Of course, as in Minecraft, ability to play afterwards is important too. I, for one, like it how it was done in that game, despite it having even less of a story that Starbound will have - you get kind of cutscene, a reward for a tough (at least, relatively) fight. But it's up to you what you do afterwards and you can very well get back to what brought you to the game in the first place - crafting, exploring and building.

Have fun? Kinda mean that, I play games simply to have fun (Most of the time) I plan just to play the game, course make myself some goals but otherwise I don't need an end game.

With the voice demos and such, it seems like more of an exile for the Avians at least. But I have also heard stuff about the world demolition.

All the times i've heard anything relating to the main story have said homeworld destruction, but this was a while ago.

Endgame goal? Hmm... Maybe just build an army of creatures, and just dominate everything...:viking:
Or maybe build an army of super genetically enhanced species of super Gunthers!... Er, I mean Space Penguins.

So every race has a different main reason for leaving the planet. These reasons will more than likely be your main quests. Once you finish the main quest you should get a trophy symbolizing the victory, and then be able to continue your side quests.

well i am not sure about the normal game, I feel there should be a sort of end, but this being space, I would like it to have some endlessness to it.

... Okay, seriously, i think it will be the typical standard-sandbox-endgame after completing the story and getting the best tools - building either ridiculous huge or ridiculous beatutiful... Things... On your homeworld and shaping as many planets to your will as you like :) now that i think about it, it sounds pretty awesome :D

For me, I think other people have already said it, but build giant cities/monuments. One out of pure gold all mined by my hand should be good enough. Also, I heard someone say something about empires fighting each other, and that sounds amazing... just think of it. If there was a multiplayer server with 2-300 people, it could easily be split down the side and have two 150 empires, or four or five smaller ones with differing numbers fighting each other. You guard your home planet, go to theirs in your ships, and blow them and their cities up :)

I'd love for there to be some sort of resolution to the story for each race, but that by no means the game would be over. Give the players a cutscene that shows the defeat of the "big boss" or whatever, and the beginnings of reconstruction of their homeworld. Then, provide lots of side quests and optional missions to further that effort.

In this way, there's a sense of accomplishment for reaching the game's final tier and defeating the biggest boss mob, but there's still also lots to do afterwards. A HUGE flaw in many games is that the ride is over almost immediately after attaining the best possible gear. The game is a blast as you're in the process of becoming powerful, but ceases to be fun the moment you are powerful.

If Starbound manages to find a way to fix that, then the game will truly have no end.

I had fun in skyrim after daedric, then Dragonscale and plate, and then Stahlrim, so the way to make the fun last is TONS OF SIDEQUESTS! (and maybe several main quests)
