    Good question! I think I'll also include a bit of an explanation on other points of Avikan culture, since it's all quite interwoven:

    Avikan hatchlings are raised by a hatchmother: an adult female Avikan who's primary occupation is to feed and raise hatchlings and younglings. Younglings will live with their hatchmother for a couple of years, and are given a very broad basic education. In general, a youngling will show particular interest in one or a few areas, and eventually, they'll be encouraged to start living together with Avikan of the occupation that they show interest in. From there on out, the younglings will become the apprentice of their adopted parent, learning their trade through observation and practical and theoretical teaching. Since younglings are raised by a hatchmother, families aren't very important in Avikan culture, and many Avikan don't even know who their biological parents are. The eggs are usually brought to the local hatchmothers soon after the eggs are laid, with only very few Avikan deciding to keep the eggs and raise the hatchlings on their own.

    The Seekers are the primary scientific division of the Avikan Nomada: they are responsible for the development of new technologies, they research old ruins and new discoveries, and work together with the Rhaiod to develop new types of medication. Avikan youngsters who show interest in science are encouraged to live with members of the Seekers, and will grow into their own roles within the group from there. Adult Avikan who later decide to become Seekers can contact existing members and request to join them on their daily routines, in what's essentially an apprenticeship.

    The Centlars are a subdivision of the Seekers, who focus almost entirely on studying the Centens. They are responsible for artefact recovery, reverse-engineering of Centensian technology, and the general application of Centensian studies. In general, younglings will start as an apprentice to a Seeker, and become Centlars later on by starting a new apprenticeship with an experienced Centlar. Adult Avikan who decide to switch occupations can often start an apprenticeship with a Centlar without first going to the Seekers.

    Made some alternate head sprites for the Avikan that make them able to wear some Avali headgear--specifically the goggles--without clipping/floating issues; if you want me to post the raw malehead and femalehead .pngs here, please feel free to request them! Otherwise they will stay personal only.

    Is it supposed to be more or less impossible to find a quicksand biome? I know frackin universe with its extended list of added biomes makes it less likely to find one but I'm up to my armpits in fully explored desert planets(I think 73?) and still haven't found one. The closest to one I've come is the tiny pools of quicksand found below the surface of the irradiated desert biome but that doesn't spawn anything except the local random generated fauna and cosmic spastic irradiated LSD cactus people/monsters.

    At first I thought you might have just run into a very unusual streak of bad luck in trying to find the biome, but looking at the Frackin' Universe files, I think that FU might actually be to blame here. Elithian Races adds the quicksand biome ("thea-desertwetlands") by adding the subbiome to the end of the list of possible subregions for the desert, like this:
    Code:
    {
    "op":"add",
    "path": "/planetTypes/desert/layers/surface/secondaryRegions/-",
    "value": "thea-desertwetlands"
    }
    I thought Frackin' Universe would use the same method, but it doesn't. Instead, it completely overwrites the list of possible subregions with the following line:
    Code:
    {
    "op" : "add",
    "path" : "/planetTypes/desert/layers/surface/secondaryRegions",
    "value" : [ "aliendesert", "cactiplace", "crystalswamp", "finesand", "badlands", "desertoasis", "dryriverbed", "calichefield", "pitchfield" ]
    }
    Usually, this shouldn't cause any issues as Elithian Races has a priority setting that should force the game to load in Elithian Races after most other mods. However, if for some reason the game loads Elithian Races first, and then Frackin' Universe, the changes made by Elithian Races will be lost... I'll contact sayter about this!

    I spoke to Sayter recently, and he's just finished updating the way Frackin' Universe handles additions to biomes. The issue with finding quicksand biomes should be resolved when the next update of Frackin' Universe goes online!

    And several hours of desert planet hopping later, new char new universe, and I'm still having issues finding a quicksand biome.

    I suppose I must be a bearer of bad luck then, oh well, drifter's emporium is always open if I need some drops for a quest or item.

    Progress has been a bit slow the past few weeks, but I'm starting to pick up the pace again now. Next up for the Aegi is getting a new type of crafting table ready - it's going to need a completely new custom scripted interface, which is something I haven't done much of so far, so it's gonna be a bit of a challenge. After that's done, I'll work on finishing up the tiered weapons, implementing the new settlement, and doing some other stuff on the side.

    If you'd like to stay up-to-date with the mod, I occasionally post updates to the new GitHub page for the mod. You can download the latest WIP versions of the mod there: https://github.com/Aegonian/ElithianAllianceStarboundMod

    How does the society of the Centens work?

  18. Aegonian

    Aegonian Weight of the Sky

    To be honest, I haven't fully explored this yet. I have the general idea down, and am working on some of the more detailed stuff, but it's such a huge topic that I don't have it written down quite so clearly as with the Avikan Nomada or the Aeginian Federal Union (for which I've written far more than I have for the Avikan).

    Whereas the Avikan have a meritocracy - where the leaders of society are the people who contribute the most to Avikan society - the Centens had a geniocracy, where the most intelligent members of society lead the society. Having reached a level of technological advancement where resources such as food, water and power are no longer a concern, the Centensian society turned into one almost entirely focused on science and art. The Centens strive for knowledge of all things, studying everything they find and even going so far as to visit other universes to satisfy their lust for knowledge (in Elithian lore, we live in just one of countless universes all part of a larger omniverse). Our universe is one of many they visited, although ours turned out to be one of the most interesting universes due to the abundance of life.

    The Centens had scientific teams monitoring and studying developing species, and one of their subjects of study was the Avikan people. Every such team had a primary scientist, an Overseer, assigned to them. For the Avikan, this Overseer was Rhadeis. The Overseers were forbidden from interacting with their subjects, but Rhadeis developed a sense of compassion for the Avikan and intervened when a natural catastrophe threatened the Avikan. Since then, Rhadeis interacted with the Avikan on several occasions, even granting them access to Vas Vha'leih, a Centensian base on Kadavan, when they had need of a safe place to call home. Rhadeis was banished from Centensian society for his actions, and the study of the Avikan was officially cancelled, but Rhadeis continued to observe (and interact) in secret.

    Another aspect of their society - art - was mostly expressed through architecture. For the Centens, it was a sport to design and build structures which would defy basic physics, resulting in gigantic and illogical structures which sometimes served no other purpose than to be pieces of art. Their love for mathematical perfection often resulted in the use of perfect cubes in their architecture, which is why you see all of those cubical pillars in the random encounters.

    Makes me wonder what their origin universe and home planet is like, possibly converted into one gigantic hyper advanced research and data storage machine.

    A couple of questions, if you'll entertain them:
    1. I've noticed that the majority of their outfits don't have sleeves or even shoes for that matter. Is this likely to change at some point where they'll get more complete outfits? I'd imagine it not being that great to float around in space with space armor that fits you like a t-shirt.
    2. One individual in the monolith area of the starfarer's refuge(with all the purple tepestry) is wearing what looks like centensian metal armor or at the very least helmet and breastplate. Any chance players will get a taste of that action? Also is there a chance of it being full body?
    3. The various centensian tech type weapons you find feel a little lackluster in terms of their damage for their level(except for the architect, I just love how that thing kicks ass). Is there a chance of them getting a point or two of a buff sometime in the future?

    1. I assume you're referring to the Avikan? There's a few reasons why they have so few full-body outfits. For one, they are a lot harder to draw: sets without sleeves (or with short sleeves/pauldrons) are quite easy to implement, while full sleeves have to stretch and bend to fit the arm sprites, which can be quite difficult to draw sometimes since the appearance of the sleeves has to stay consistent throughout the animation. There's also some lore-related reasons, though.

    First, the Avikan live in warm climates, and generally don't need (much) clothing in order to keep warm. They wear some long robes (like the Deep Desert set) to protect themselves from sandstorms, but otherwise long clothing is often inconvenient. Second, the flaps on their arms make it difficult to tailor clothing that fits neatly around (or even envelops) the flaps. Short sleeves are much more comfortable to them, and generally allow for greater mobility.

    For their feet, it's even more difficult. The Avikan have very unique feet which don't really fit with the human concept of a shoe (see this sketch I made - the Starbound sprites don't really do the unique foot structure justice). Making shoes or pieces of armoured footwear is quite complicated for the Avikan, and unlike humans, they really don't need shoes to walk comfortably. Their feet evolved for moving across rough terrain, but the unique tripod-like structure of their feet also allows the Avikan to spread out their weight across a larger area, which is especially useful in quicksand.

    For their tails, armour (and clothing) would be easier to make, but since the Avikan use their tails for balance, they don't like to put much weight on them. Any pieces of armour they would wear on their tails would have be be made of especially light materials.

    2. That set is the armour worn by Avikan Centlars - a group of (mostly) scientists who study Centensian relics, and who also attempt to apply their knowledge for practical purposes. I plan on making the set obtainable in the future, but if you'd like, you can already spawn it in the IDs are "avikan-centlarhead", "avikan-centlarchest" and "avikan-centlarlegs"). A set of full-body armour (made from Centensian metals) is actually being worked on now, and will be added in the next update!

    3. I can definitely buff a few of the weapons! I always try to balance the weapons, but sometimes they turn out a bit too powerful or a bit too weak... Any weapons in particular you feel could use a buff?
