I don't really see coding wise how elevators would present much of an issue. Just have background (right-click blocks) elevator blocks which you line the elevator shaft with - blocks which restrict/conflict with anything else being placed in that space, and to also stop NPC's from getting in the way. Then its just a platform which can only move vertically along the background blocks, until the background blocks stop. Hold up to go up, down to go down... surely? They can build mechs, let us fly in all directions, but not code the ability to lock our directional movement to just vertical? Really all this needs is to lock the movement to just up and down when we step on a particular platform.... And as a bonus if that platform came with you, itd just look more like an elevator......
Yeah we need something along these lines. I think multi-linked teleporters are probably the way to go though, this less block collision issues. Or, y'know, just make it so that elevators just break blocks, or stop on contact with them.
This game needs elevators. It needs more active blocks/items. Things that move. Everything is so static. I'd be fine with teleporters if elevators existed. I don't want this game to be less alive and moving objects create that aesthetic. Think about how pistons changed Minecraft.
Why not go the Metroid route and have an energy elevator. Press up (W) and it'll go up to the next platform that is aligned with it.
Some sort of object on rail system should be feasible within the engine, hopefully it gets implemented.
I actually had a universal rail system idea some time ago, let's see if I can dig up the old post: http://community.playstarbound.com/...obile-platforms-elevators.42599/#post-1426887
well, it could be a multi-part construction. It wont work without an elevator, elevator doors(for all floors) and elevator shafts. (the shafts would be the walls and the background and nothing could be placed in it to prevent blocking) Tele-porters would probably be closer to end game tech and I personally would like quicker access to non stair elevation systems.
Did anyone mention tubes? I think the Jetsons had them. No moving parts, but step into a an "empty" tube and use up/down to change altitute really, really fast. Probably use titanium and glass to build the parts. It's like floating on air.
yeah this one is great and easy mechanics i think, press up and it checks if there is a receiving platform if not nothing happens, same for going down.. and you can pretty much have infinite platforms above and below
An animated interactive object in the background, it does not move you by physical force, but rather like a slow blink technique. You interact with it, the door closes and you appear on the other end.
I think this is a neat idea, if elevators couldn't be done then they already have a teleporter that you have on your ship scripted. I actually think they have teleporters planned, though. Not sure. Ladder's aren't very futuristic
I'd just like to chime in as a developer in response to it being "too hard" and state: that's ridiculous. Elevators are pretty simple, unless your actual movement/world system is.. awful. But, considering we already have the ability to jump (and some form of gravity) as well as the ability for monsters' skills to lift characters up, elevators should be child's play to add in. I can understand how some things would cause worry, like someone placing blocks between points A and B, but a simple check that'd traverse the Y coordinate to check from top to bottom for stray blocks before allowing use would easily fix that. I honestly can't see what's "too hard to add" about it at all. You just create at max 2 or 3 blocks. A top, a bottom, and, if needed, a middle segment. And, hey, you're done. Just some basic logic and wa-la.
Elevators are something I've always wished they would implement in Minecraft and Terraria. It only seems all too appropriate that they would be a thing in this game.
Oh, there's certainly the ability to create them, with various redstone mechanisms in Minecraft able to fill the bill for example. But if you want anything that goes from the surface of the world down to the Adminium, you need to build a ridiculous contraption whose effort in design would negate the point of building it. I'm speaking specifically of an object designed for the purpose, with wiring from point A to B that tells the elevator object where it's movement limitations are at.
If it's so easy, then you should try to code it into a mod or something. Obviously, there has been a bunch of controversy about this. Saying something is easy doesn't make it easy. I support speculation, but it might simply not work with what is in the game, and the things they don't want in the game. My idea: Use platforms as ladders. Have them be climbable, other than pressing Space repeatedly. There is obviously some problems with everything that has been said. With the Gunpoint suggestion, I don't think that they would be able to mess with it being in the background, especially since it probably wouldn't be as easy as adding one thing in. It'd probably have to code in a whole new plane for mechanics and coding to work. This is just speculation.
