I feel that an early game item should be a glove that allows the wearer to grab ledges. While they are holding on to the ledge their battery will slowly deplete. This way it can be useful early game and (if the batteries are upgradeable) still usable late game.
Agreed, i don't want important terrain to be screwed up because a wall can be exploited by these gloves.
I don't know if I'd like either edge-grabbing or jet packs. Edge-grabbing could be useful maybe until you find/craft a hook/jetpack but after that it doesn't seem useful at all. Then jetpacks in any cavernous area sound plain annoying, grappling hooks ftw.
That would bring a whole new meaning to 2D games like this, even though people have attempted to make parkour maps on Terraria, you could google it. It is kind of hard to do it because you can jump 3 blocks instead of one.
I like the implications of this. It would be alot easier to get around when you need to actually jump for things. 8 D
In summary. -lots of reasons to like it. -only reasons not to like it are actually incorrect, let me explain why. In Terraria, did you stop jumping normally after you had a grappling hook? did you even stop jumping normally after you had a jetpack? chances are no, you did not. similarly, there will ALWAYS be circumstances aplenty where the simpler methods are easier and more preferable to the later game ones, so I say yes to edge grabbing and maybe even climbing of certain materials.
