I know this isn't a feature seen in most [indie] games but seeing the opportunity, I'm here to suggest the ability to grab on ledges and edges. It's fairly self-explanatory. What does the community think? What are some limitations or perks to edge-grabbing? I'm open to ideas.
    Limitations:
    • Can only be held on for 30 seconds. 15 seconds with one hand
    • Severe limitation caused by 2-handed items. Where you can hold for <10 seconds.
    • If you're attacked, you will fall.

Woawoawoa slow down there partner! we don't want this turning into some sort of edge grabbing fly kicking floor licking videa game

I find this a rather good idea. Well, but ONLY if you could hold on to ledges if:
*You have at least one free hand
*You do not have a heavy armor
    *or heavy stuff in general

This would be for the good of stealth like classes. For example, you have a suit that could make you invisible, or your just pretty light and stealthy, and you got just a dagger (or a lazer-nano-dagger or whatever) , this could greatly improve your agility.
In generall, games have stealth classes that only have the poitiv effect of: You are fast, you are almost invisible.
    In every ******* single game!
But with this you could also get up everywhere! You are not just faster, you can get to places where others have to build themselves up.
Combined with climbing and other stuff in generall, it would be a lot of fun for one handed classes.
So, well, I support this idea, I think.... ^^

I understand the idea, but why? I don't see an advantage of being able to hold onto a ledge.

Imagine that there's a cliff that's just slightly too high to jump onto. Bam, there's the advantage of being able to ledge grab.

Oh I see. I was thinking of being able to lower yourself down and hang onto a ledge. They would come in rather useful at times then.

I could see this working nicely

I like this, it was the one navigation thing that I wanted in Terraria. I hope it is in the game.

That's right, its not a parkour game, the next thing people might ask is to be able to have weapons attached to their feet as well....

i think it should just a simple edge grab pull your self up or edge grab pull yourself down type thing in my opinion

Hanging on an edge may not be practical, however pulling yourself up as a smooth motion with a jump is definitely something I would love to see.

Yeah, an edge-grabbing system or something like that would be cool. In Terraria, it was really, really annoying when you couldn't get up a ledge that was only a block too tall.

Of course we need conditions, and blocks that cannot be grabbed, but edge-grabbing NEEDS to be in Starbound.

Hmm, blocks that you can't grab as well, that's new, it's kind of like the non-portalable sections in portal.

Yeah, that's what I thought of when I had this idea. It would be cheating if you could just grab every ledge like that.

Jet packs ingame, some blocks u can grab others u cant a good idea, grappling hooks another interesting side angle here.

i think it'd be quite handy to have a ledge grab available
for instance you try to jump over a ledge to the other side but can't make it all the way, a ledge grab could help save yourself falling down a large hole and dying

or for jumping up to a hill you can't get over but your hands can touch, you could grab on and pull yourself up

another thing is when you want to go down a long hole/large cave in the ground to explore, but don't want to take a ton of fall damage, crouching down and holding onto the ledge of the block and dropping down could save yourself a few points of fall damage

or even grab onto some ledges/blocks jutting out of the wall and drop down to the next ledge/block and grab on to that to safely get your self down the cave
the same could be said for jumping up and grabbing the blocks, pull yourself up, repeat to safely get out of a large underground cave

you could argue "there will be grapple hooks, jet packs, teliporters, etc.
well im quite sure we all aren't going to be starting out the game with all those lovely items and gadgets..
it'd be nice for there to be more ways to get into a out of sticky situations for those who have few items/gear with them

besides, i personally don't see how this feature can be anything but helpful to the game

For some reason grappling hooks don't seem as likely as jetpacks, they might actually replace the hooks. Jetpacks would most likely use the thing people are calling "energy" or "battery".

well what about "spring boots" then? jump super high and take no fall damage, but when you land you'll keep bouncing until the spring shock wears off ;p
or perhaps even "sticky shoes," the player can walk on walls and ceilings when equipped ;p

but in all seriousness, i don't see a reason to remove/replace hooks all together: they are very useful items, regardless of being in space and everything is futuristic for the most part

jet packs are basically the rocket boots of terraria, unless you could stay in the air for longer periods of time, hover if need be, and have flying controls rather then jump and blast yourself in a direction for a few seconds

personally, jet packs and grappling hooks both have their uses imo

Hmm, alright, but either way we are getting off topic. I guess grappling hooks could be used to have a long range ledge grab, like a sort of claw that attaches to things instead of a true "grappling hook", maybe even used as a weapon?
