Easter Egg within the character creator [3/6 found]

YEAH WELL I'VE TRIED 2! I immediately realized how futile the situation was.

I must repeat myself, Tiy said to NOT GUESS because that is a colossal waste of time. He said to look for clues.

 

Most of the "guessing" a lot of us have been doing isn't guessing. Because we have no idea what form the clues will take, putting in anything remotely related to Starbound isnt technically a guess, or it is at the very least an educated one.

 

My point exactly. It isn't straight up guessing if we consider places clues could come from and base our attempts on that.

 

I'm not gonna lie, I've been leaving up to the community figuring everyone on here would find them far faster than I ever could, but now i have no hope of finding any myself since a whole slew of people have been coming up short. Slackers

 

Welp, i re-read every Race description around 5 times to find keywords and referenced some phrases with media such as books and television as well as terms that the Devs use. so far, i got nothing.

I think this is a misunderstanding. The easter egg already found was IFoundAGlitch. But the armour can be used on all six races, so six easter eggs. But As I said, I don't think that counts as six easter eggs, because that would be halfassed and I doubt they would halfass something like this.

 

Then we still have 5 problems.

 

I did some code analysis on the character generator. What's going on under the hood (for those who are interested) is the name you type in is turned into a hash, and then the server is queried with that hash. If there is something at that hash, the server will give back a datasheet that includes additional helmets. The current asset loading code only supports loading more helmets right now, and since there is one Easter egg per race, one set of helmets per race is my guess. The hash code is in the webchargen.js file (toHash), and the actual code for loading the new assets is in settings.js (checkName). The hash they use is a 8 digit base 16 hash, so it has just over four billion combinations (16^8). Perhaps with a coordinated program, the Easter eggs could be brute forced, but it would take a long time, and it would be trivial for Chucklefish to simply change the hashing algorithm to foil that effort. Also, it would not give us the actual text meant to trigger the new helmets, only the hash used to query the server directly (and what's the fun of that? )

The thing to take from this is that the words that will trigger the Easter eggs are case sensitive, meaning capitalization counts! IFoundAGlitch would be different than IfoundAGLitch. They result in different hashes, and one will successfully get a data sheet while the other will fail. Also, brute forcing different hashes may not be productive, but compiling a list of words to try hashing together in different combinations may be more useful (a dictionary attack). It would be plausible to make a program that would coordinate effort over multiple computers to do just that, in addition to loading the hashing algorithm directly from the javascript used on the actual character generator automatically.

Just for food for thought though. I'm far too lazy to do something like that!

Maybe there is in fact 1 easter egg, and the rest are being added and hinted at in future updates.

 

That is exactly what I was thinking, but then again the other races were all ready announced.

 

Maybe guys all the screen shots and livestreams that have been shown with Tiy's character and also the staff's characters in the different races maybe we have to replicate them in the character creator. Get investigating guys because there's quite a few. Your trusty cyber cat Camz

I'm at a loss. I've checked all the screencaps and livestreams, put in names and descriptions and weird phrases I've seen over time. Nothing works.

Perhaps this was all an elaborate ruse to keep us occupied so people stop asking when Starbound is coming out.

 

After 6 hours of searching, I've got nothing.
