I meant it need not feel like a mining sim. Long day is long. Alcoholic beverages may contain alcohol.
I want to have to refuel my ship, but I think there needs to be more alternative fuels, or have coal found in higher concentrations (more logical). If I could use all, burnable and radioactive materials, with or without a bit of crafting in between, that would be great. If there was a larger variety of fuels available on different planets, and more versatile uses for those fuels, that would be fine. Using straight unrefined wood, tar, oils, coal, alcohols, and the like at variable fuel ratios would be nice, the point being to have variety (as befitting a sandbox game), where, if one is low on one material, they could substitute another. Frankly if they had kept wood at it's 1:1 fuel ratio, there wouldn't be any complaints, or if they increase the ratio of coal from what it is to something a bit better, having less of it wouldn't be considered an issue. Having to strip mine or clear-cut an entire planet to fill your ship's fuel meter quickly at the first tier is dumb, no matter how you slice it, and for those of us who like preserving the natural beauty of planets, and prefer not to grind forever to get stuff, it's not going to happen. Maybe once trees regrow it would be balanced, but not now.
Well I could accept it if that would be upgradable For example you first have solid fuel generator that recharges battery of ship Later you can add Bio-reactor (consumes plant and animal matter) Liquid fuel generator (consumes liquid fuel canisters) Solar panels (SLOWLY recharges battery- even when near planet closest to the blue sun you will have to wait an hour to go from 0 to 1000) Fission reactor (consumes radioactive metals) Fusion reactor (consumes Deuterium) Singularity reactor (late-game generator that consumes anything- energy output is based on pixel value- 10 pixels per 1 energy unit)
I've never had a problem finding enough coal to fly my ship through many planets build all the titanium and steel i could ever need and fly my ship non stop through the sectors as I progressed all the way to a level 10 sector x planets. if anything there is too much fuel, and for you complainers about being able to throw some logs in the fire and fueling your ship off of coal as being costly..... YOUR FLYING A SPACE SHIP AT FASTER THAN LIGHT SPEEDS OFF OF COAL! I would be content using all the fuel banks just to get off to the nearest planet with a pile of coal. anyway I've already made a post about a better system, which is not necessarily related to fuel costs per say, that I think would make this whole conversation go away and never come back.... please go away. http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/the-origin-of-our-ship-lets-make-it-fly.52648/
I love how people read the title and post without seeing the direction the thread has gone. @vinceclipse, we've already been there and this contributes nothing to the conversation. If you're going to defend it, defend it for being a well fleshed out system or that mining coal does contribute to the atmosphere of the game. Basically just pick out virtues of coal mining that make this a worthwhile contribution to this game. Calling people complainers and making points that have already been made to mainly advertise your thread is rather quite insulting. [fail] edited because I was linking the wrong user. TT.TT [/fail]
The problem with coal is that it's required for torches. It spawns at a low enough rate that I often come out of a cave system with less coal than I went in with. I'm just glad for the unrefined wood -> coal conversion, because I wouldn't have gotten anywhere without it. It would be fine if it had a high enough spawn rate that you'd naturally accumulate enough coal to travel to a couple new planets by the time you've collected the ores to advance a tier. Without having to clearcut a large planet, I mean.
You can also just only take the "ground layer" where you can break the background for light, than farm for Coal easily. The only reason to go further down is to find other ores more commonly.
So I had this long detailed post, but then i took a mouseclick to the wrong button *UGH* But i'll try to repeat what i said originally. The thread has gone in a different direction, it's obvious what the agreement is on coal, leave it as it is, but now people are suggesting other ways to get fuel. I dislike this idea as it discourages the exploring of individual worlds, so here is the tweak, and my suggestion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have come across many bland planets in my travels that I hated , because they had nothing interesting on them, no dungeons, only death and trees. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ However having to actually locate fuel is a good thing, because it encourages the detailed exploration of an individual planet.(Which the devs are attempting to make unique) And in the next update planets will be even more so, unique. Beaming down to a planet, hanging out for ten minutes and leaving is bad, because you can't experience the planet. I suggest that we do have the ability to make pixels into a power, however it should cost 30 pixels, not ten. (So it takes a little longer) I also suggest that we , as players should be able to turn biological materials, (such as planet fiber) into biofuel via some sort of converter. Fiber is extremely common place on planets, but you still have to find it, therefore, unless you have stocked up on fiber, once you spend the 25-100 fuel to go to another planet you still have to hang out for awhile. Biofuel should give the same amount as coal (1 fuel) But it only costs 2 plant fiber to make one bio fuel. (and you can get a ton of plant fiber from exploration) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Also, it already only costs one fuel to jump to the moon of the planet you are by. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I also suggest a couple more tweaks, (Though I am fine with the current system, ignore if you wish) we bring the cost to jump from planet to planet in solar system down by 10-25% We do the same for jumping from solar system to solar system. But we increase the cost to move on to the next sector by 100 We also increase the difficulty of bosses in a sector by a little. (To balance things out)
