Simple enough. Events that occur rarely in the game where the planet experiences an earthquake that can shift structures and tunnels. Even possible to completely topple buildings.
This would be a pretty fun mechanic. Some suggestions: different planets would have different strengths and frequencies for earthquakes. There should also be ways to predict and/or prevent them. One thing, though- Im not sure how toppling buildings would really work...
I don't like it, there is nothing you can do to stop earthquakes, and I like my buildings only failing when I fail, not when the random number grenarater says my buildings should die. and don't say there could be something to prevent it, if there is a I need it, and I fell like anything I build before that is wasted. It's not fun sorry
But it gives a sense of fun, not in a destruction way, but in a way where you actually have to take a look at your surroundings and actually having to plan a method of protection. For example, in a planet with lots of water, you have to shockproof your buildings in case of an earthquake and build a triple-reinforced, waterproof dome. It gives you more opportunities to customize and play around with your planet.
What method of protection doesn't limit how I build and lets be build the tower city I want? What doesnt' force me to use it on my mines or have to redig useless dirt?
I can dig it. I definitely can see where the fun would come from, here. But here's an important mechanism that would need to be introduced: a method of detecting a planet's "Tectonic Stability Factor". The fascinating thing about planets with very active plates, is that volcanic eruptions... shifting crusts... they also create a near-constant metamorphosis of the minerals and materials deposited throughout the world. So a world with a very active crustal plate structure would be volatile and hazardous to build on, requiring specially reinforced structures and the like... bu they would also provide EXCELLENT opportunities to find rare/unusual resources.
That's why you have to base the design of your city to match the planet. No one goes to an underwater city and NOT build some sort of protection against it. I'm just saying, it gives the option for people to design specific items for specific needs. Some people like that, some don't. Maybe they would make it a toggle, so both parties win?
Yeah, i think it would be cool to have to design buildings better on unstable planets. Maybe have strength of material and points of contact with ground come into play? Good idea.
I like this idea a lot. It brings up something more to the adventure and would make it less static. Natural disasters in general should be added, depending on the planet.
Mars does bring a good point, while I would hate to see my hard work destroyed but something completely random, I personally would be more mad at myself because I picked a stupid place for a city. Also, an Earthquake doesn't always mean total destruction, there have been high level earthquakes and place survive, sure with some buffs and scratches, but they survive.
If your building was completely toppled, you would have failed to protect it. It's not just random numbers, as they said different planets would have different tectonic activity. Your argument is like saying "I don't want my buildings to melt because the volcano next to which I built them just erupted!". This would only add realism, a fun-factor, a new challenge, and TheSilentObserver also had a great idea with the mineral richness of high tectonic activity planets. Seriously people, I personally am tired of not having any challenges in games like Minecraft and Terraria where nothing will ever get destroyed, there're creative modes for that kind of gameplay, but for a sci-fi game based on planet exploration natural disasters (even weird ones that do not occur on Earth) should be for granted.
Some planets should have no earthquakes, or very week ones (part of the difficulty level of the planet) and some will have often earthquakes, strong earthquakes, or both.
I saw the title and was immediately on board. I've always wanted natural disasters in these types of things. Whether they're earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, volcanoes erupting, tornadoes, hurricanes, or just plain cats raining from the sky. Yeah it'd suck if your building was destroyed because of something like this, but this is where I agree with the others and say that this is why you build ways of protecting your city/structure from disaster. Also. I've always wanted to outrun a natural disaster so that's a plus.
The possiblilities of natural disasters would be awesome, especially as said if it was able to be toggled on or off. but as with real natural occurances, steps could always be taken against those problems... like, maybe a type of block type that is almost totally invulnerable to earthquakes?... shelters that provide cover against hurricanes/tornados?... possiblity of blizzards and use of heat guns/lasers to clear through it? just an idea, but so far everything from this game started as a simple idea... and they've created it into one of the most anticipated games ever!
Kinda hard to code in don't you think?Still a volcano eruption in the distance that spews fireballs on screen would be nice and more realistic in my opinion.
A little late to the reply I know. But they didn't say "I want earthquakes on some planets" they said they want them. building near a volcano is a clear risk, you can't "tell" that a planet is going to have an earthquake/ be earthquake prone.
i'm sure all this would be fairly difficult to code... especially as I have EXTREMELY limited coding knowledge. but, it would be very cool. and the background animations which spawn forescreen things to deal with would also be a blast!
It could be hard or easy based on how they do it. shaking the screen and making blocks fall shouldn't be hard at all for coders of this skill
