Earthbound references in Starbound?

It occurred to me today that I've never created a brand new thread because I'm too afraid of the "WTF Y U NO USE SEARCH?" brigade hunting me down and burning me at the stake. No, just kidding it just doesn't occur to me to share my ideas with other people unless asked. I'll let you know right now I didn't even bother to search for a related thread to this topic.

So here we go, I decided to pop my new thread cherry with this (multi-pronged) question:

    Will Starbound have Earthbound references?

    Do you want Earthbound references?

If you were going to implement Earthbound Easter eggs / references in Starbound, what would they be and how would you implement them?

For those who don't know what Earthbound is, go download a SNES emulator and play it! (after purchasing a legal copy / at your own risk / chimichanga, I do not endorse piracy or whatever i'm supposed to say here) It is a delightful RPG that takes you far away from the typical fantasy story that RPGs back in that day (Final Fantasy / Breath of Fire / ect ect) stuck to, instead choosing a more 'modern day' setting for you to explore.

I have no idea, but knowing that game got a cult following and is called one of the greatest games of it's time...

...that still doesn't guarantee it will have some references in Starbound. On other hand, if one of artists of Starbound is a great fan of Earthbound and decides to add an easter egg or something to it...

I am the entire brigade I killed the others to absorb their power, I don't really know if this is more of a chat discussion it's always a thin line.

But maybe I have no clue as of yet.
    Maybe.
Could just be a line of dialogue when observing something, or clothing item that looks like it's from a character. I doubt any mob would be put in seeing as it' a nintendo property.

I'm all for an Earthbound reference. I've still got my cartridge and the guide it came with. Yes, when it was released (the standard version, they didn't do "collector's editions" for console games back then) it came in a giant box with an official nintendo's player's guide for it.

Yes, Earthbound is amazing. Maybe have some planets named weirdly with numbers or something. Fourplanett. Or something.

Or maybe, when you take a coffee break, the screen goes all sorts of weird colors with calming music for a few minutes. That's an idea, there.

Or, maybe as a mod, when you crit a monster it goes SMASSSH!

Yeah, i'm not creatively inclined, but I will download the hell out of an Earthbound mod to starbound.

WHAT? YOU'VE NEVER PLAYED EARTHBOUND? BURN HIM AT THE STAKE.

No, but in all seriousness, you should. It's a great game. I'm kinda sad it ended with Mother 3, there needs to be a Mother 4.

Earthbound struck me odd. It's like a Japanese satire of American culture, kinda disturbing how far off they were on what they thought things are like and it was quite unfunny to me. I do remember renting the large box with the giant magazine sized guide in it a few times. Thick book, too. I'm ambivalent about the reference as the game was mediocre to me, but I also admit Super Smash Bros benefited from having Nes as a playable character.

I prefer Mother 3, personally. References to either one would be cool.

I'd rather not have references to other games in Starbound. It breaks immersion, and references generally aren't that funny anyway.

Joking also breaks immersion. Especially when joking about joking about breaking immersion.

You should know this by now!

I think, when done properly, references to other games can be really neat. I don't know what the copyright laws say about doing things like this (I know Tiy got permission to use a Creeper from Minecraft in the game as a homage to that sandbox great). But if I'm ever playing Starbound and find myself in a deep underground alien complex and I run into a huge dude in green power armor with a little blue hologram chick with him and they're fighting their way out, I'll certainly crack a smile. :)

So little references to other games pay homage to them. It should never be over done, however. I don't want to have pookas and goombas and king koopas on a planet covered in mushrooms, for example. But it can be a lot of fun to spot these references.

(Side Note: I was cracking up while playing Saints Row 4 at the level that goes all low-res and side scrolly and is a parody of Streets of Rage. That was fun.)

So, do it right. Keep them few and far between. Make them fun to discover. If so, I'm good with it.
