As a little extra info on that I suggest:

Horizon - Do you see what I see?

Edit: Also, I support this suggestion in its entirety.

I disagree. Look at the picture in my first post. You see how everything's slightly red, and he's playing as a human? With this idea, if he were playing as a race which developed around a blue star, and went to a "yellow" star like the sun, it would also look red.
Essentially, it's not an advantage or really even a difference at all. The effect of this suggestion is simply that each race would view the starlight as some colour, instead of every race seeing it as the same colour. You're always going to see some stars as a particular colour, with or without this idea, so why not add another layer of immersion to the experience by making the colour effects apply in different ways to different races?
And, besides, if there are race weapons, why can't there be race goggles? If you've got race goggles, you could see the way other races do.

For the guys who've posted videos about people seeing colours in different ways: That's awesome, but I'd like to keep this focused on the suggestion.

While the suggestion holds some interesting ideas in regards how extraterristials percieve the universe, I really don't think it would add anything to the game and honestly I think I would find it annoying if anything.

Two things. Firstly, you can choose to turn it off at any point if you like, that's a thing
Secondly, what particularly would you find annoying? I'd just like to get a sense of what people don't like about the idea.

It doesn't matter if you can turn it on or off if it's not a good idea.

The idea makes sense, it is understandable that other races would see different shades. They wouldn't know that though and in their eyes it would look normal. It wouldn't make sense to change it for the player. My main problem is that the idea wouldn't add anything to the game having different shades for no other reason that you can isn't worth it.

Yes, it would look normal for the player. That is definitely part of the idea. The differences would become more apparent in multiplayer, where two different races interacting with each other would have different observations.

Also, you say that "having different shades for no other reason that you can isn't worth it", but I disagree. What isn't it worth? Is it not worth the effort, the time? It wouldn't take too much effort or time to implement this idea.

But hey, if you don't want to support this suggestion, that's fine. I don't want to force you to like it.

    ...Huh.
I was imagining different goggles to see in different spectrums(infrared is better at seeing living beings at night) but this puts a new spin on it.
You are forgetting something, though. Wouldn't infrared races see other being's heat? And UV races can see other cues, not sure what. This might take some balancing.

The infrared and ultraviolet spectrums are significantly larger than our visible spectrum. None of the races would have visible spectrums divergent enough from ours that they'd actually be able to naturally utilize the infrared or ultraviolet spectrums for the purposes we've designed technology for.

I love this idea it makes so much sense, I mean there's even some discrepancy between humans as to what colors are easiest to see. It's true that this color tint stuff doesn't affect gameplay a lot and in Single Player it's pointless, however in multiplayer it might be kind of fun or even funny. My dad has some kind of partial color-blindness that makes it hard for him to tell apart reds and blues and possibly greens, I'm not sure exactly, but sometimes it comes up and I'm a little surprised by him.

it could also maybe be optional since, again, no effect on gameplay so no reason not to make it optional.

So much sense was made in this thread I just have to agree

I wasn't clear on one thing, since it's optional, why not have a filter that gives the entire screen a little bit of a tint? It would fit the ideas discussed in the OP because if for example you have a bluish tint on your screen blues will be a little bit harder to make out and reds will look different. Thus in multiplayer there would literally be a difference in which things stood out best to different players maybe even to the point of some races not noticing certain things right away.

If you did it right the tint would make your own race's flashlight appear white and affect other race's in a relative sense.

Firstly, yes, it would be optional. I've mentioned in the first post that it would be entirely optional.
Secondly, yes, some people see colour differently. People have said that before in this thread. It's really interesting, but it's not a productive topic of conversation.

Thirdly, I do think this idea would be much more fun in multiplayer. The differences that two people would experience are the main thing that comes to mind when I imagine this in-game.
That might be more annoying than anything.
Also, it would affect the choice of race more than I'd like.

One race race would see infrared as white and another ultraviolet as white? Me Gusta
As Sizzle said, a colorblind situation would be interesting too.

  18. DoomZero

    DoomZero Zero Gravity Genie

No, not quite. No race sees infrared or ultraviolet as white. Some races have the ability to see some of the infrared spectrum as red (while seeing our yellow as blue), and some races can see some of the ultraviolet spectrum as purple (while seeing our yellow as red). They still see the same rainbow we do, it's just that their colours are shifted left or right.
As for the colorblind thing... I'm not sure.

Implementation of varied colour receptors. I like.

Only problem i can see with this is confusion, example.

(floran): "Take this orange drink, it will make you fly around like a flopchop!"

(human):"What orange drink? i only see blue!"

While its not a huge problem, you could understand how it could become an inconvinience for groups of people building a structure, human char asks for floran to pass the grey iron hull, the floran passes what THEY see as a grey iron hull, which could end up being purple to the human. This will drive architects crazy, one person will tell them how amazing their colour scheme for their building is, and someone else will say how gothic and dark it looks.

Still, im amazed that you thought of this, its a really cool idea, but maybe not for all situations.

NEW THOUGHT: What if you "genetically engineered" your character for a certain amount of time using the amazing science system i hope they implement, just a crazy idea ;)

As you can see, I've already thought of that problem. Aside from it being terribly confusing when it comes to building stuff, I can't imagine all the pain it would give the programmers to actually code in different appearances for different blocks. Actually, scratch that, I sort of can imagine it, and it wouldn't mean a whole lot of grief. It's still dumb regardless.

Literally no idea how this is relevant to my idea.
