Imagine that the star that your home planet orbits died someday. Growing huge and hotter, the sun burns your planet to a crisp, destroying your spaceship and all of your items. In real life, a star's lifespan is about 15 billion years. When it starts to die, it grows gigantic in size, swallowing up nearby planets. Then, if it is big enough, it explodes in a firey supernova, or it shrinks to a white dwarf if it is a small star. I think this would be a great feature for Starbound. It encourages players to not stay in one place all the time. If implemented, it would be cool if that when planet is destroyed, it is removed from the starmap, and when a supernova occurs, the star is removed as well.
But, encouraging the player to build a lasting base is one of the MAJOR major issues that they are trying to fix! Something tells me this would not contribute to that.
That's not something that most players would want. Almost all would find it to be at least an annoyance, and at most very upsetting and unfair.
As nice as this sounds, I happen to be on of those people that wouldn't like something like that to happen. I want to build a Universe bit by bit, but this would hinder that to a great degree. Building and destruction don't exactly go hand in hand. Have enough trouble with the meteor shower planets. lol At least those are avoidable... This would be a little too forced to play a certain way, and that I don't really like. I like how this game is versatile in how you go about things as well play style. I would like to keep as much versatility as possible. For myself and others that see it similarly.
Sounds fun to some degree. However, somewhere and somehow. That one new player first creates their character. Spawns on a planet, notice their star is about to explode and says good-bye to starter planet. They won't be going anyway unless he/she made a new character. But what I just said is a bit too far fetched. Exploding stars... cool but like what everyone has said, it would greatly discourage players from building.
I like this idea, in some way. I suggest that dying wouldn't be possible for every star, just for one type of stars. In example, you could recognise a potentially dying star from it's color or size, or even from a handy infobox (or the specific system's name). Then you could decide would you stick around to check the planets for one last time or to run away. Death of a star should also be a relatively slow process. You should have enough time to get your stuff and flee. It should also happen only in the higher level sectors to avoid players dying in their starter planets. This is my little suggestion, I really like idea of dying stars. However, if this would be completely random, idea would be certainly doomed.
May I make a change to my original idea? I would propose that the supernova event would be very rare. Also, it wouldn't happen in the Alpha sector at all, and extremely rare to happen in the Beta sector, with the chance increasing through each sector. Also, if you didn't read a section of my original post, it says that a second part of this suggestion would have the option of small stars to shrink into white or brown dwarf stars. So only large stars have the chance of supernovas.
