Dyeing Weapons

I liked the 2nd option, it was a really cool thing on GW2 and it would be even cooler on Starbound!
Oh, and it would be awesome to make some colors have some effects like a trail\glow\sparks...

While I applaud you for a brilliant suggestion I think the paint tool is super simple in comparison. You should flesh that out and put it in the suggestion section for sure.

Black and Red or Black and Green armor and weapons from me incoming!

 

I've seen spray paint items used in stream videos before (mainly used to color tiles), perhaps those will play a part? Or at least have the same amount of possible/available colors?

As for me - greens and yellows and blues mainly, though red is my favorite color... it just probably won't suit my Floran character is all. We'll see! Maybe some red accents somewhere.

Dyeing is meh, I wanna be able to change its shape. If the best sword was some ugly serrated abomination of the blade, I'd like to make it look cooler.

 

And if you want it green, stab a Floran for an easy infusion of Chlorophyll.

 

What if we had a handheld color picker tool? You could point it at something and then dye the item whatever the color of that pixel is.

I see my weapons and I have to paint them black.

 

I think what they have planned is the 3rd option. I believe they mentioned it in a past update about dying armors.

 

I wonder if the dyes are going to work with non craftable/non-tiered weapons. I hope not, it would kind of take away from the uniqueness of randomly generated weapons.

 

Please put this in the suggestions when the suggestions update releases!

 

I don't see how it'll take away the uniqueness of those weapons. Just because you have the option to dye something doesn't mean you have to dye it. I personally don't like wandering around in armor that makes me look like a sad clown, so I want the ability to color-coordinate. It's a bit limiting to say, "Hey you have these cool customization tools, but you can only use them on items a, b, and c....items d-z are as-is."

It's generally better to make things like this optional. It'd be a shame to restrict everyone just because some people don't like or don't want to use dyes.

 

Besides, the more unique items will likely be visually unique in shape anyway. Changing the color on certain key parts would help them match outfits better, instead of running around in an orange outfit with a purple umbrella (as a poor example).

I'm not such a fan of having rarer colors because I might like a certain color, but it's not that rare so I don't feel like wearing it due to everybody having it. Though I would like a system of unlocking colors. Maybe a system like this...
Dye pouches could be littered though the Universe and there's no way of knowing what color is inside until opening it. On open, the game gives you a random hex color to use however many times you like on any piece of dyable equipment. All colors are equally rare yet still require effort to find.

For colors I end up using, I'm boring so I'll end up mainly leaning toward darker colors, especially just black.
