So mining lasers... If there are any... Will drain energy but not break?
Or will they require something akin to a "crystal replacement" where some kind of fix needs to be applied (but the tool itself is not broken)

It doesn't prevent it. It discourages it. Because if you're just digging through layers of rock, rather than mostly exploring caves that already exist, your tools will wear out relatively fast.

What about drills? or other mechanically advanced means of digging? why dose this game need a pointless inconvenience debuff like "dull" tools? Let me guess the next genius innovation involves your character needing to get back to the ship to fill an "entertainment gauge" ?

I think the getting-in-over-your-head with natural dangers and finding less ores for it is punishment enough for the hellevator approach. The only thing this would do is impede underground construction, making it so that if you want to build something under the surface for functionality or choice, like a bunker or a regular elevator shaft to said bunker, you're going to have to take breaks to go looking for ore, waste lots of stockpiled ore, have it take twice as long, or hop back up to the surface very often. It's nice to hear that the only things affected will be tools, but it still seems like a pointless hassle/waste of materials to me.

I'm generally not a fan of durability for the most part. However, this method right here? All I can say is one thing.

    I can dig it.

He did say this was only for low-level ores, so perhaps its something you "grow out" of when you make more advanced tools later on or really high-grade picks?

No sense in complaining about it before we know all the specifics.

I get the impression higher level tools will not wear out very fast at all, so it shouldn't be much of a problem unless your process is *start game* *try to dig out massive underground base with tier 1 tools* I think.

    Yes, I did.

You were speaking about crafting new parts for stuff like the jackhammer/drill. We're not going to get that.
We're probably going to have a system like "use iron ore for iron pickaxe to sharpen it".

Quite. Doing that with ease will be for later on.

Not so awful as total breaking, but it's still - another thing "stated as NOT being in game" went down the chute.

I don't blame people for complaining for absolutely no reason, it's a wonderful pastime on the internet.

I hope someone makes a mod to turn this off. Looks like I'll have to run a server with said mod.

I already didn't dig in straight lines unless playing with a group that preferred as such, and didn't mind it. So all this is, is a sour mark on the game, a chore that is completely needless.

"chore that is completely needless.", Its another time consumer(that's a good thing(A good example is pets)). The longer the game lasts the better, i have waited months and now I am hoping for months worth of entertainment.

    ^ This.

Plus, if durability is going to be that easy to fix, then why even have it in the game in the first place? So as to discourage Hellivator digging? We want to discourage it so much that the steps we take wind up discouraging other things?

There's also this- If we want to go the exploring route, then we'll go the exploring route, durability or not. In the meantime, there's this semi-annoying upkeep thing that everyone has to deal with, no matter what they're doing.

Shoot, if anything, durability might discourage exploration at times, simply because someone is a bit meh about the upkeep thing. They may not even give two pence about making Hellivators.

Why would we want to discourage Hellivator digging, anyway? That's the part I don't understand. If the world gets more dangerous the further down you go, then the player has either earned the right to go that far, or they're getting in over their head, which means they'll just go back up and explore around, anyway. So, what's the point?

This isn't one of those "fear of players having too much fun" type of things that game developers go through, is it? Yes, I'm being a bit nattery there.

Still. Grumbling aside. if we absolutely have to have durability because hundreds of babies and cute kittens are going to die if we don't, then I suppose this is the way to do it.

I for one welcome it: When i get into mega projects I find myself naturally setting up 'work areas' to improve efficiency. These areas usually consist of storage boxes and workbenches. In my early terraria days my hellavator often had 3 or 4 stops where it had a couple of chests loaded with gear and workbenches and anvils. That way I didn't need to travel back to the surface. As time progress these stops sprawled out into massive ore mines reaching out several full screens in both directions.

I've since stopped doing that as I've cut corners. With this proposed system in place, i'd be less inclined to do that.

I've always hold dear to the motto that it isn't the destination that is important...but the journey.

you'll die because of the toxic effects of the microscopic shards of ore that are entering your body, piercing your interior organs from the inside. all because you were too lazy to mine it before using it to sharpen your tools. :rainbow:

Uhm yes. YESSSSS. I hated the diamond tools in minecraft actually having a chance of being gibbed after finding the bloody things.
