A lot of you have been concerned about the recent announcement of Durability from Tiy. Here is a bit of a better explanation from the man himself excerpted from IRC:

    Tiy(IRC) Said:

So if it's "blunt" you'll still be able to dig but much much slower?

Does this mean that when you use ore to sharpen a pickaxe.
    The ore gets used up?
On one side I hope it doesn't, because that would be a waste of materials.
On the other hand, if not, the entire system would be useless

While this is good reasoning in itself, the fact that we can't teleport from underground already discourages hellevators (which I will still do anyway, because c'mon, hellevators). I agree with encouraging cave diving for ores rather than strip mining though.

You use up ore to re-sharpen tools, or you can teleport(from the surface) to your ship and get them repaired automatically.

    I don't mind this.

In most games with durability it is done so poorly it is a very massive problem and an obstacle to fun (few games makes the game more 'real' or adds to the design and makes sense, such as Fallout 3 and weapon jamming, although NV kinda stubbed its toe on that one).

But it won't stop hellevators. A dumber friend of mine did it so much it became a habit on Terraria and caused numberous Hardcore character wipes... Even on Minecraft his habits are dangerous to my entire collection of friends, I doubt a blunting of mining tools will do anything more than slow him on his mad quest for vertical straight lines.

Not asking this to be rude or anything, but didn't we already know this?

hm, I suppose we didn't specifically know just the last bit (at least I didn't)

    Great, great system.
Way better than I've ever seen in any game.

I mean, I know it's possible for a pickaxe to break down if you're mining some hard metals, but... Come on. Pickaxes are meant for that. That is why they're constructed so that they don't get broken instantly. (I know, pickaxe that becomes "blunt" sounds a tad funny, but it's a better explanation than having it "mystically explode to a no point of return".)

but we sawwww this... also thats all good in my book even though im not really for it still thats a perfectly fine medium :D you guys make such good decisions. I think this game is going the be the end of any other resemblance of life I had gg no re me.

This sounds good actually. And them simply becoming ineffective instead of getting a broken stamp placed on them sounds a bit more solid.

Actually after a very long period of use, the "Pick" end of a pickaxe often starts to mushroom out and become more like a hammer than a pick. It's a hell of a lot worse at it's job when it's banging into the rock instead of chipping through it.

Oh, thanks for the enlightenment. :O
I hadn't known that. It's pretty much common sense though. I feel stupid now. xD

I like the idea of a blunt/sharpening system, thankfully it's not actual durability.

    This is good news.

I intensely disliked Dead Island because of how they implemented durability. Awful afwul game.

Hasn't tiy said that it will only affect low-tier items aswell, might be terribly wrong though, so don't quote me on that...

i dont know, at higher level, having to craft new bits for my drill/jackhammer sounds interesting if said bits last a while on theire own, so that replacing them is needed eventually, but not so quickly that it becomes a bother
