the new argument is for realism(in a 2d game where you travel to different planets as a plant person monkeyman fishman robot or bird person... oh or human i guess:laugh: )

Boss fights in Terraria at least were long as hell. I don't want anything I have breaking during that encounter, because someone on the devteam still hasn't learned how awful durability is from the mistakes of the past. And I can't just tell the boss to stop slapping my shit, so no repairing does not legitimize the "feature". Repairing and durability only adds stress. I don't want to have loads of stress and worries during my escapist experience.

Planets are real. Space travel is (eventually, probably) real. Sentient beings that aren't humans are potentially real. At what point does realism go from being expected to being unacceptable?

I LOVE the idea of printed items having durability, while authentic are indestructible. I really hope that's how it works at launch.

Friend wants to try out my assault rifle but I don't want to give it up? Counterfeit it in the 3D printer! It'll break if they use it too much, which prevents it from being an overpowered tactic.

Exactly. Not to mention that pursuing realism too far has damaged quite a few games already.

Well it could be useful for those who want to be traders on multiplayer servers. Having multiple copies of a breakable but strong weapon is better than having only one unbreakable to sell.

At the point of interrupting fun. Video games are about fun, not realism. If realism can add to the game, by all means add it. Does it impede you too much? Don't add it.

The problem is, realism can't be the only reason something is added to a game. Humans are included because they're familiar, not because they're real. Gravity is included because it makes sense and allows characters to cool things like jump and use jetpacks, not because it's real. Space travel is included because it's a cool concept, not because it's real. We don't hate durability because it's real; we hate it because it's completely tedious and serves no purpose in a non- MMO game.

ok that makes sense. durability stands to be more tedious then necessary if survival is not in question. Lack of the durability mechanic wont (should) not effect the survival elements of the game, endgame or otherwise.

If this is true then what is the point of blueprints? Trade gear? Or perhaps there is the Hardmode like terraria where if you die you loose everything..
But you will have the capacity to rebuild your stuff! Rebuilding takes resources and resources promotes trade, teamwork and exploration.
When exploring you can and should catalog mineral deposits if your not ready to mine them out.
Teamwork will help not just in exploring but building materials and blueprints and trade said materials to another that has a lack of whatever material.

In the end a person can have the best gear and not worry about the suddenly *oh crap my sword broke moments* and if you lose everything do to some unforseen thing its not the end all... you can rebuild.

Truth. There is always the subset that wants more realism at any cost, though (making these optional features is usually the best way to satisfy everyone).

As long as it is done well, then by all means I'd love it to be included. Having to repair now and then is never really an issue for me. A badly done durability system however can make me feel like pulling my hair out. I'm looking at you Dead Island.....

Gravity being the same on every planet is not real. Existence operating on a 2 dimensional plane is not real. Ammo fed weaponry and using a shield does not suck a mystical energy out of us, not to mention even energy based weapons like laser and plasma guns would still have some sort of clip or indevice power source. And if you want durability for realism, I'd love to see anyone try and break tools, weapons, and machinery built for heavy use, in real life. If you want durability for realism, then items would break after hundreds upon thousands of uses, not 100 actions of using something exactly as intended, not to mention how more durable items in the future would probably be with whatever engineering and materials we discover in times to come.

its the fact you have 0 proof of that realism it is fantasy then still... so good try . The wonderful part of video games is you can make up what ever the hell you want and its not that I don't like this fantasy stuff I just know to keep it as a fantasy even if I am immersed in the game. Sorry for poking fun though I see your point of the whole gravity stuff.;)

I do not want item durability. It's true I don't know how it all works, but I would much prefer that the 3d printer's sole use was for learning blueprints if it meant we didn't have to deal with item durability in any fashion.

No purpose? Hmm. Bear with me for a second, I want to try this argument with some other things.

What purpose does your character being able to die serve, anyway? All it does is add tedium and repetition to get back to where you were.

What purpose does spending your money at a merchant serve, anyway? All it does is add tedium and repetition to get more money for the next item.

What purpose does fueling your spaceship serve, anyway? All it does is add tedium and repetition to get more fuel to go to the next planet.

I personally feel that the argument of splitting it up so that "authentic" things are indestructible and printed stuff is breakable is kinda odd, because (if my tired brain does not missinform me) Tiy stated somwhere that the 3D printers are so advanced that basically everything is printed. This would mean that your beloved "authentic" item might actually from a lore perspective be printed. Also it feels wierd that some items would have durability and some wouldn't.

NOTE: These are my OPINIONS, so make of it what you want. Now, off to bed!

I'd like to see a recursive kinda thing, like the more you print something less durable it becomes. Or, it becomes less effective.

Like taking a screen shot of a .jpg and then turning that into a .jpg. XRepeat.

Having to repair my weapons every 20 hits, and for a stupid quantity of money, didn't exactly fill me with joy. It seemed that the better my weapon, the faster it wore out too, which definitely seemed counter intuitive. I'd hope that if anything, better quality weapons in Starbound would last longer. But there is a careful balance, and I'd err on the side of too much time between each repair rather than too little.
