see i don't mind if it would work like that because it adds more of a challenge/realism into the game, like having to repair at your ship or something.

I'm also in favor of the durability system. So long as we can repair our stuff, with materials or pixels.

Maybe only available with the 'hard' mode which would also activate hunger?

OKay, first I don't get why you make it sound like that. "Hostile and mean" makes it sound like you're implying I was offended or bothered on a personal level by it. When really, this all just seems rather sensationalist and kneejerky. And furthermore what state of affairs? We do not HAVE a state of affairs as all we have to go off on for this entire discussion is a once sentence long post on reddit with an emoticon tacked at the end. When currently, and realistically. We still don't know if there's even really going to be a durability system or not.

I just think the discussion could stand to be a slight bit more constructive.

It would also require you to carry a diverse loadout. If you don't want something to break, carry two things. ETC.

I don't like the idea of Durability in Starbound like others have said before me it would be to tedious I'm the sort of person who likes to collect and use everything and having to worry about weather I want to collect this item and use it for what ever goodness it does however durability effecting items that was crated via Printing Machine would be alright seeing as how there not the original product and would in scene be weaker

It adds realism elements and it adds another money sink, which is always needed to keep money valuable.

The funny part is that this is likely going into base game.

Now it's time to get some popcorn.

As long as there's a reliable way to repair them, I say yes to item durability. Maybe a station on your ship that lets you repair things?

Or five of the same weapon. It doesn't require you to carry a diverse loadout, just a bigger one (Not that that in itself is a problem, though).

Also, this would basically reinstate ammo counters, only the ammo counter is your weapon's durability.

Having a durability system without a reasonable way to repair or reuse high-end items doesn't make much sense.

Yeah, durability should be an option for servers and singleplayer. Terraria's no durability property made it better.

Also, the durability of items doesn't necessarily need to be like minecraft's, which degrade the tools fairly fast.

For example, in Diablo 2 - 3, you can spend a fair load of time without worrying about the state of your equips, and dying cause them to degrade slightly.
I'd be fine with something like that.

as in the OP, i'd only want durability on items that are 3D printed. makes it more worth-while to go explore and find my own gear.

Never disputed that, just found your logic to be... well, nonexistent. "I quit once I got top tier items" in this discussion made it sound like durability would have kept you playing... to repair the stuff you could never upgrade. And nothing else. Since durability doesn't do anything else.

Seeing as absolutely none of my points were responded too, only other things. I'd like to clarify. perhaps you would like to have to go to your ship, or elsewhere every so often to use materials to repair all of your items. That's great, more power to you. But me, and many more people, would rather not have to take breaks and click through menus and grind materials for the sake of pacing and realism. For this feature to be implemented, it needs to be either reworked, removed, or given an on/off option.

It depends. If all it really means is that once in a while, you have to replace or repair your armor, then I'm fine with it. All that means is that you need to keep a good reserve of important things on hand. Many MMOs manage to implement durability without making it a complete disaster, I can't imagine why Starbound can't.

If it ends up being like Minecraft, where you spend most of the object's lifespan scrambling to get together the materials to replace it... then we have a problem. Part of what made Terraria so much better is that you could actually progress through the game and try out the "fun" recipes without worrying that you've just severely hurt yourself because that was the last of the gold for miles around and to top it off your pickaxe just broke and now you have to fall back on using copper because that's all you have. I'm okay with needing to repair my armor, but I'm not okay with having to spend most of the game trying to find new materials for pickaxes.

EDIT: On second thought, after a long and heated discussion, there is nothing good about durability. The only people who enjoy durability are "hardcore" elitists who apparently don't enjoy games unless you're constantly grinding for the sake of "realism.

Ugh didn't think of it but thats a good point.. because thats awful. Wouldn't that be shooting themselves in the foot?
Maybe they mean to use it in a way we don't expect? Can only hope.

Some people here have said what I've always thought, but I'll try to sum that up nicely:
    • As stated in a previous post by myself, in a different thread, adding durability to any game only makes it more tedious.
    • What's the point in using good items, if they are only going to eventually break? This is not real life, this is a video game. Disappointment is not fun.
    • There are already enough *'realism' elements in this game. Adding anymore would over complicate things.
    • Shoving some arbitrary system down our gullets, and expecting everyone to just deal with it, is NOT fine. People are attracted to things for different reasons, but in no way should you try to lessen someone else's experience for your own personal gain.
*I am aware that the correct tense would be 'Realistic'. 'Realism', however, is thrown around so often that it is now known as such.

Actually: It should be like the system in WoW, where if an item is fully degraded you can't use it until you repair it. Armor doesn't count, weapons/tools don't work ect. You either use an anvil or talk to a repairman. It doesn't fully break though.
That is if we even get durability
