Maybe it's just me, but I don't care since it's something we should not decide for.

I trust the devs will make durability work well enough and be a good enough mechanic

    they're pretty smart fellas.

Indeed they are, but it just never really worked out for everyone in the past. I'm worried that it might ruin a very promising game if it gets implemented badly.

it vary much depends there are two ways to do durability
1.in games like minecraft, Don't Starve the weapon disappears upon durability reaching 0 which in a game like this were you could get epic's its would suck if they just disappeared
2.in games like wow gw2 and most other mmo's there is a system were you armor and gear takes damage and if its durability reaches zero it goes into a state of which it cannot be used but can be repaired to its original state for a cost

it would be way better if starbound used the second thing type of durability instead of the first because i would rather pay a price to repair instead of replacing the object
another reason this type of durability would work in starbound is the whole fact there's not gonna be much "Static gear"(gear not affected by generation)and therefor if you lose the gear there's no real way to get back the exact same thing
unlike in minecraft were if you diamond sword breaks it can be rebuilt and the enchantments are a thing that isn't required as appose to a something you need

so ya it would be better if they made the durability so it doesnt destroy the item just make it so you have to repair it

I agree. I can understand the argument against durability, but as a lot of people have already said, it takes some fun out of having to get the materials to fix the item. I am on the side that is for durability. If implemented properly, it can bring a lot more of a challenge to the game and longevity... though I think that longevity isn't a question in this game.

Everyone is way off on the kind of durability we're considering. More details on it later, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I quit firefall after they added durability that perm destroys your gears, Also its evident to see that immediately after they added it, about 80% of the old players outright quit the game. Not saying that there wont be people who will play Starbound if they did the same thing... just saying they are gonna lose and turn away a big portion of people who would otherwise prefer not to have it. That would include me, though if its just a temporary durability loss and it wont really affect the game <i.e after playing for a few hours before gear breaks and needs to be repaired> then i wouldnt really mind

Durability, if implemented, would apply to things like picks and axes. Nothing else."

sorry devs but alls fair in this war

Its basically durability on items from the 3D printer right? *shrug* whatever floats yer boat, yer good at implementing mechanics well, by now.

Ive got it: This game requires so much processing power that it is capable of physically damaging your computer, the "durability" bar actually represents how close your computer is to exploding.

Many of us have have those games where you played once an collects dust for many years. But there are those games that 10-15-20 years later still play and still receive great enjoyment from.. this is one of those games where we hope will fit into that category.

Ok the kind of durability we're considering would only affect tools. I.e. axes, picks, etc. It only affects tools crafted from "common ores". These are ores that appear potentially on any planet, like stone, iron, copper, silver, gold and so on. When a tool runs out of durability it's marked as broken but does not leave your inventory. Returning to your ship automatically fixes all broken tools. The reason we're considering adding this is to encourage sideways progression whilst mining. To continue mining you'll need to continue finding ore and using it to repair your tools. This won't be time consuming or difficult unless you try to mine straight down 'hellevator' style.

  16. Ahhhh, that's really nice actually!

I remember the hellevator days. Just diggin' down and hopin' to find something. This forces you to actually find caves!

Wait, what about torches and camfires? I would have honestly thought that they would be affected by durability the most, since they can run out pretty fast.

Also, can't you just print ores to fix your tools? Whats the point of mining for ores when you can just print them?

You can't print ores, and even if you could you'd need to return to your ship to do it. 3D printing is only possible on the ship. And possibly your homeworld.

  19. So is printing just for manufacturing items? You can't print raw materials?

I hope this is the case, or else it would be really easy to get an item you had blueprints for; you could just print its ingredients.

3D printing is largely for objects you can place in the gameworld
