Hold up, before you start to read this post, read Tiy's word on durability.

    Regarding durability:

So it's been brought to my attention that in a recent reddit thread, Tiy made the comment that item durability may be added in after all. As seen here http://en.reddit.com/r/starbound/comments/1ek2gk/17th_may_progress/ca0zypq

Now I don't about the rest of you but I'm strongly against this. Item durability would add tedious grinding and it'd bring a "but I might need it later" mentality, where players will find themselves refusing to use REALLY good equipment/items they just found in case they may need it later, or maybe they just don't want it breaking and having them lose it.

What's the point of even delving into dungeons or fighting bosses in the hopes of getting good loot if it means it's just going to break later? Before you say "Well just stick it the 3D printer" The 3D printer DESTROYS the item for a CHANCE at getting a blueprint, there's no guarantee you'll get the blueprint, meaning you may find the perfect weapon you want, and you scan it, it's destroyed and you get no blueprint, meaning you've completely screwed yourself over.

Ah, wait a second, looks like that's not the case, as seen here

    http://www.reddit.com/r/starbound/comments/1ek2gk/17th_may_progress/ca15ngx?context=3

No, item durability would just mean most players will find themselves using weaker/common weapons more often because they're cheap and easily reproduced, and I hate when a game punishes me just because I want to use something more fun.

    Edit:

Some people have also suggested item durability may apply ONLY for the 3D printed items. If that was the case then I'd find that perfectly reasonable and workable. Though now I kinda wish I could add that choice to the voting list.

Well it depends if we will be able to repair the items.

Chances are if there is a durability system there will be a repair system in turn. I would also suspect that highly powerful items will have a much greater endurance than weaker items. Either way, the system seems like it would be useful for keeping people from just stockpiling a stupid amount of things, keep you looking for the next best thing.

I think as long as I can repair it and it won't just break/delete itself when it's low... then yeah I guess!
The materials required to repair stronger items could be more difficult to come by, and the weaker weapons easier to come by.
Brainstorming, I guess, but I also hate hair trigger durability when you thwap someone with a sword a dozen times and it breaks, sigh.

Or maybe some guns might need to use fuel/energy to fix them.

... I don't know. This is a difficult decision. On one hand, we could print out replicas of our previous tools (if we successfully get blueprints), and this would really improve the printing system. On the other hand, the printed tool would be less valuable, whatever that means. Kind of ruins the fun.

If some sort of repair system was included as well (so that we don't HAVE to print out an item to keep using it, or go find another), I guess this would be a good addition.

    Horrible system.
    "Got my awesome gun"
    /Breaks mid dungeon
    "Oh great"
    Adds nothing to the game.
I mean, if there's something cool with repairing, why not.
    But still.
Just as a concept, bad idea.

Even if you can repair items it would be stupid.

If only 3D printed items broke it'd be fine, actually it'd be better, it'd encourage crafting.
But putting it on everything is stupid and stretches out gameplay.

As long as the 'hand made' items don't have durability, I'm okay with it.

I found the best gun ev- *breaks no more awesome gun* .... pass.
Pass so hard on this even with a repair system, babysitting a durability bar is tedious!
Even on printed items, why print if you can just craft an unbreakable. Its all boring busywork.

No, Nothing, I don't want durability or repairs, it just adds another step that is NOT fun, and just plain tedious. Will you enjoying taking time to make something you already had? No, how about taking time every hour to repair equipment? This isn't fun, It's not needed, and should not be in the game to any degree.

Durability can be done well, but I don't think it belongs in Starbound. It just adds too much bother for the player.

Wow there's some really hostile opinions in here. Durability on the level of even Minecraft is not gonna ruin the game guys.

Personally I'd be fine with it, since forcing some change every now and then prompts a drive for resources and leads to adoption of items and tactics someone might not of tried if they could stick with tried and true methods. Though I personally think a broken weapon or tool shouldn't vanish, and should be either repairable or able to be broken down into pixels.

Since come on, just since something broke doesn't mean all it's component parts vanish into some mystical cosmic asshole of broken pickaxes and lost dreams.

Man, this bias against durability in the votes is pretty funny.

I'd like having to continue to take care of my items to make sure they're in tip top shape. Because then it makes it feel more wholesome to have the need to take care of your babies, your favorite items. Just having boxes full of invulnerable top shelf items bores the hell out of me. Terraria got insanely boring(and many other games) once I got top tier items. Then I quit.

If there is nothing to strive for then why even play?

Except there are a mountain of mods that remove durability, add recharging durability at nocost (IC2 ect), and so on.

Durability works for minecraft, but for this? Does it really enhance anything? All I see it doing is force you to print or goback to places youve been or spend moretime harvesting things you may not want to instead of playing building and so on.

It adds more inventory management then gameplay.

The thing is, forcing the player to use more common weapons because they don't want to regrind to get the harder ones isn't fun. Having to repair a broken weapon with rare materials is not fun either. So lets say my favorite weapon breaks, and now, like you said, I'm pushed to use another type to adapt. I do not like this weapon much, so my choices are either, remake my weapon from scratch that could take a very long time, or use a weaker version of it that is more commonly found. I don't see any good coming from that.

Also, these "Hostile and mean" Opinions are just strong ones because we disagree with the current state of affairs.

So you'd keep playing in order to have your top tier items degrade and then repair them in order to keep playing in order to have your top tier items degrade and then repair them in order to...?

Durability doesn't add anything except realism elements, which is fine, but put it on the optional list if anything.
