You're right, I made an assumption based on my own understanding of things and assumed others would not directly take the usage of the word random as to mean "kinda like the lottery".

So yes, I concede your point.

Simple facts are I meant "random encounters" meaning they could theoretically happen anywhere and at any given game generation there could be thousands of them waiting on thousands of planets, and they just get crossed off the internal progression list once the player has made their way through it.

That's still random. If you use a spawn mechanic such that every new planet explored has a 20% chance to spawn the encounter until the boss is defeated, at which point the game stops checking to spawn it, there will still be the odd statistical anomaly of a player having to visit 100+ planets before being able to progress.

Random is still random, and important, story-related events should not be left up to chance.

Finding ore is random too, and finding ore is even more important than finding a boss. So what?

Ore is randomly generated on every planet. That's quite a different situation from having bosses randomly generated on only some planets. If you have a boss appearing on one out of every five planets, and have a million people playing the game, the number of people who have to explore fifty planets before finding that boss will be a heck of a lot bigger than you're giving it credit for.

You can have bosses generated 100% of the time on certain biomes in certain sectors. You would ALWAYS be able to find a penguin UFO on snow worlds, and always find a bone dragon on arid worlds, etc.

That way you still have to explore the galaxy a bit instead of "phoning it in".

I didn't have an opinion until I read this thread. Honestly, I would like the ability to tier up higher than bosses if I so choose. In Terraria, you could go as far as you wanted and go after a boss when you were ready, summoning them via items or killing certain things, etc. Honestly, I would like bosses to be location based or summoned in other ways and be left out of progression for the most part. I do however like the idea of taking out bosses to get CERTAIN crafting privileges.

I love the idea of exploring for bosses. However, I don't think they should be essential to advance for the next tier of items, especially if they require a degree of RNG to encounter. That said, I do feel that the current tier-advancing format of having to defeat a certain boss that you spawn in order to advance to another tier is starting to get dull, and it would be nice if they could do something different and refreshing. I don't think "random bosses" is the solution, but it's a good start.

I don't agree with OP's colorful language, but I agree with the spirit of the message. It's a bit silly really.

Well, ET did want to phone home, so there is precedent :p Agree with the spirit of the OP's message, though perhaps not the tone.

The key point being, and the key point that I'm making is that the "boss" as such is a pivotal point in progressing through the sectors, and I'm fine with that, but the "boss" being intrinsically linked to technical capability is moronic. Ore occurrences are determined by planet level, technical capability is limited by resources, but you shouldn't be limited in technical capability due to a "boss" you should only be limited by the resources you have access to.

The effective equivalent is to say that you shouldn't be able to build a nuclear reactor in Tekkit or Feed The Beast unless you beat the Ender Dragon first.

I agree with OP, to an extent. I've only visited 3 planets and a moon before I decided to bunker down and fight the UFO. Besides trying to find rare items/resources, there's little incentive to jump from planet to planet. Forcing us to find the boss in order to progress in the game would encourage exploration!

Sorry, not reading every other answer before mine (it was an hard day).

I would like just to point at how terraria managed the boss encounter.

You just mind your business while, in the middle of the night a big bad Eye appear.
Or while you're digging into the corruption.. What's these strange orb? Oh god Wtf!

Then, LATER you can even summon the boss. But the game was build to let you meet new bosses "naturally".

On top of that, bosses drop cool items sometimes but mainly next tier of materials. That was a very smart idea. You can still stick with a self made man idea BUT I'm giving you the chance to get a boost as prize for your efforts.

Not an item that allow progression but items that fasten your, already going, progression.

I really think the Dev should think about it.

The equivalent would be not being able to build an ender chest until you killed an enderman. Or fight the wither without fighting wither skeletons. Or make poison potions with spider eyes until you killed spiders. Or use bonemeal until you killed skeletons. Or build TNT until you killed creepers for gunpowder. Or... or... or...

But feel free to keep using hyperbole like "this game is moronic and insipid and stupid!" if that makes you feel better. But it's seriously just a bad case of the QQ's that you've got, there.

Yes, but the ISSUE with RNG of any kind, is that a lot of people have had problems with it because it is random. I don't care how anyone codes it, if it's based around RNG in any way shape or form, you still have a chance to get utter shit drops. Yes there are people that have a 99% chance of getting something, but no they hit that 1% like 3 times. Unless of course it ends up being NOT random but rather, you have to kill X amount of monsters for the thing to drop then it's just go to every planet kill a boss, rinse, repeat.

Then what you're saying is just have the bosses on certain planets? That's nearly how it is now, cept you can't pick your battlegrounds in your case. Yes it makes the first couple people explore, then a lot more people will get fed up of looking for this ONE boss they need to beat to progress and just find the proper co-ordinates to a planet with a boss on them.

RNG can deter progress, there's nothing false about that. Some people have bad luck and roll the bad side of the coin multiple times, it happens. Then why were you saying have random bosses have a chance at dropping that key to game dynamics? Unless it's a 100% chance at a drop, or a 100% chance that the boss will spawn on so-and-so planet, people will be stuck from progressing. As it stands it's 100%, you can progress when you wanna progress. Build a beacon, kill a boss, get the next tier of items. It's not that hard.

After reading some of the other posts in here I've come to another idea, that should effectively both be able to appease the storyline, as well as allow for progressing through the story.

Why not just have both scenarios? For example it makes sense to find the penguin boss on an arctic world, or maybe even just randomly on other planets. But for those who either are having a tough time finding said boss, or just would prefer to summon it as opposed to scouring the galaxy, that option remains available as well.

Edit: Though depending on how the story actually goes that may or may not be work.

Personally, I'd rather have good game mechanics than any story at all.

I certainly hope there are some variation planned in these areas.
